As for all >of the hurt and indignation being rolled out give it a rest. And you did it in an incredibly dumb way. Look, the vast majority of list members *don't* have anything to honestly trade. Many don't have burners, much less collections other than the ones treed before now. Maybe it's difficult for you to see it from the perspective of the people who have no access to these shows, but your tone was akin to entering a crowded room full of people busily and excitedly conversing about Roxy Music shows and loudly announcing "I have these four particular shows taped and would like to trade for others" and then following it up with "No, I'm sorry, none of you proles, pedants and peasants may have them because the shows may not be treed out to you." And hey, man, I hope to heaven that's not what you intended, but that's exactly how it came across. (On that note, I still await anybody to come up with a reason [not necessarily Thom's patron's reason] why something should not be treed -- why "trade and trade only" is at all acceptable, that isn't a selfish or rude reason.) Ignore, if you can, Colleen's long-standing distaste for yourself. Her description of (something like) we may have these with Father's permission is right on the money because that's how *you* presented yourself. Had you just posted "Hey, if anyone wants to swap shows, contact me off-list," then nobody would have been upset. In short, it's not your possession of the shows that irritates people, it's what you did to advertise them. A big "neener, neener, neener" to people who don't have the contacts and the collection you have. You are perfectly capable of posessing a mighty big and impressive collection without acting like a condescending showoff. I promise. Having said that... Hey, if anybody wants to swap Roxy 2001 shows for older stuff, contact me off-list. (Provided you know up front that I will not withhold any recording of a public show in my posession from public swap, trade, tree or B&P offer without a pretty salient legal reason why I shouldn't.) - --Grant _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 11:06:41 -0400 From: "Grant Goggans" Subject: [AVALON] On that note (CD trees generally) (Not directed at all at Thom, though his input is welcomed) It was proposed that maybe, possibly, a best-of-shows compilation might be generated. Out of curiosity, what's the appeal? Honestly, what constitutes a "best performance" is entirely subjective, isn't it? I mean, maybe the five people involved with the project might unanimously agree that Newcastle's "Jealous Guy" is better than Dublin's, but who's to say others wouldn't defer? Most collectors I know would prefer the shows, and *if fear of bootlegging is the issue*, then remember that bootleggers want the individual shows and not the compilation. If Dublin's being passed around for free, then that will *stymie* commercial sales, not encourage them! I am reminded, as always, that if show-by-show works for tens of thousands of Pearl Jam fans who may pick and choose the concert of their choice, then surely it will work for Roxy Music fans... - --G. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 16:09:40 +0100 From: "Terry Lane" Subject: Re: [AVALON] UK radio broadcast Could anyone please do me a copy of the concert from Saturday night,I will gladly pay post & packing. What news ? Well, a brief sojourn through what's gone on for our travelling band of Avalonians since I last posted... : The 'break' for us, between Newcastle and Birmingham was most welcome. The first week was truly exhausting, so god only knows what it must have been like for the Band. Birmingham was an excellent gig, great fun beforehand too, as a whole pack of us met up in the Hotel Bar. Met up with a relieved Ole from Norway (I had 7 different Gig tickets for him - so he had to find me !). Manchester was up next, the following Weds, an 'extra' for me, as I didn't originally intend to be at that one. Great night again, though getting home at 04.30 as preparation for work the next day was, in retrospect, rather trying. Then - the 3 at Wembley. I won't deny that I'd previously been very, very lucky - 5 Gigs so far, and every time at the front, up against the barrier. (The outdoor gigs last year - the 'rush' for the barrier - the timing of all that stood many of us in good stead for this time). Wembley was always going to be different, as the front row seats were up against that very barrier anyway, so a 'stage rush' by all and sundry was not an option. 8th Row it was, though it guaranteed an excellent view of the whole stage. Saturday was front row time again - - and this is where it all went wrong (for me). Over zealous security, and people behind who complained when anyone stood up. In fact, the couple behind me didn't even clap - at all - right through till the very end of the last number, or stand to show the appreciation for the Band - very, very rude. Can't complain though - had such a good time at all the others. The left side of the crowd were rocking though, being led by our merry Dutch representatives. Fun afterwards, at an Indian Restaurant, then to Oles hotel - a large squad of us with much after Gig chatter. Another late night. Sunday, last night, same again - though an unfortunate misunderstanding at the end - as myself, Ivor, Lee, and Jocelyn ended up at Oles Hotel for 2 hours, whilst everyone else was in the restaurant up the road ! Surprised when Ole walked in on his own in the early hours of this morning - we were sure the whole squad would follow him. And they were under the impression we were all 'backstage' for some reason - this was not the case, we were waiting for you in another venue ! No matter, a fine, yet tiring time was had by all. 8 Roxy Gigs in 15 nights, having travelled through 5 countries, and I'm exhausted, but happy. Hi to all who I met for the first time during it all - I can't possibly remember all your names though ! Feeling a bit flat today, as I guess a lot of us are. Many of you in foreign climes have such a great, great time to come. Enjoy ! Now, where's those headache pills ? Reecey... Is anyone sharing my "Oh my God, what am I going to do now?" feelings? Back to Newcastle at teatime after travelling the country to cheer them on and it dawns that I've thought about little else since this began to break in February. The walk back up Wembley Way last night was poignant (it's usually after watching Newcastle lose something).........the sort of industrial wasteland setting, the locked up burger bars and the tatty tube station and the thought that we'll never find it all again (except those venturing abroad). I couldn't make out all of Bryan's speech, but did he say something like......."We'll hope to see you all again soon with........." and I thought "a new album". And a theatre venue tour. I had great seats for Newcastle, Brum, Manchester and Sunday at Wembley. Crap for Friday at Wembley...........and it does make a massive difference to the experience. That was the only show I didn't rate very highly. Highlight for me was the drumming. Main grumble was the almost static and shrinking set. Idea.........two nights . One for the 1-5ers and one for the 6-8ers? Martin. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 19:25:03 -0000 From: "Becky Payne" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Celebs... Out of interest, How does one actually get a backstage pass ? In the past, if I've managed to get one it's thanks to sheer tenacity and the stewards probably wanted to get me out of their hair ! I found this on the "Time Out" website. If I ever meet the author I'll stab them in the eye for this ! Music: Rock Roxy Music Oh, the indignity, the embarrassment and shame. Roxy Music reduced to this. A stockbroker, a plumber and his mate. So times are hard are they, Bry? Relatively speaking, of course. And Phil, you seemed to be doing okay for yourself. As for you, the other one. Er, whats your name? Oh yes - apologies, Andy. Whats it all about, then? Why, and what for, and how could you? Hell and shit and hell again. Okay, so you chanced it once before, and with Manifesto just about pulled it off. But it was a close call, and if you looked laughable on Top of the Pops - coolly glam dudes turned minor celebrity squares - take a look at yourselves now! Apoplexy in the front row, quite likely. Are you insured against that!? Yes, well, think on. So what are you going to be playing? Mostly smooth and runny Ferry croons, I suppose. Interspersed with a bit of ironed-flat heyday. Plenty of starch in there, too, no doubt. But what about the piss and sparkle, glitz and guts. The style, for Chrissakes. The class and guile, wit and sheer fuckin chutzpah. My God, but you were brilliant. Extraordinary. And now youre just old. Dull and old. Well, everything has its price, it would appear. So, good luck and farewell. And shame on you.
