Some albums haven`t been played for decades but it seems that as long as I still have that album then the band/artist still exist so parting with them is out of the question. This is especially true for the single John Lee Hooker album I have. I bought it as a teen before I actually knew who he was and probably because I read somewhere that he was an influence on some artist I was interested in at the time. I haven`t played it in decades and I really didn`t have to. Every time I came across it I was reminded how important he was to rock and roll. Oh boy. I remember "Mr. Miracle" form DC. It was written and drawn by the famous Jack Kirby. As a youngster I deliver news papers in the evenings. My paper route in Irvington New York ended right across the street from a candy store / sweet shop type of news stand. I swear on "subscription collection nights" I had to follow a 12 step program to stay out of it! Well............ Jack and Stan Lee literally made Marvel what it was in the early to late 60s. Jack was so well known for his artistic renditions of the Fantastic Four, Thor, Hulk, Silver Surfer, Captain America and the X-Men as well as countless, now classic villains. Some of the main characters in the resent X-Men movie were first co-created and artistically visualized by Jack Kirby. The list is endless. Jack then shocked the industry by leaving Marvel and going "over" to DC in late 69 or 70. DC gave Jack just what he needed, some of that creative elbow room he long deserved. In short order Jack created another universe and he came up with his fantastic story line based on his creation, the "New Gods". One fantastic story line running in 3 different plot streams. These 3 subplots ran in 3 different publications each with it's own main character. Sorry, breaking news but The Dark Vader character? Lifted right out of the pages from this series. Ahhh Darksteid. Hmmmm? The central, dark villain, the secrete father of the gifted, in the light, son? Hmmmmmm? Well.......... Mr. Miracle was one of publications and he was one of the main characters. In doing so, Jack had created a multi issue crossover that lasted a few years and blew the industry away. It is a small world. I don't presume to speak for others, but I suspect it'd be very welcome indeed, especially amongst the folks who won't be able to see one of the reunion shows. Obviously duplicating all of them isn't feasible, but certainly the ones worth treeing would distinguish themselves by the audio quality, setlist, and/or historic importance. And since it's not like copying material which has been commercially released as a discrete product, it falls within the guidelines Gene has so kindly drawn up. Others' thoughts? My best supporting act ever were the Talking Heads opening for Bryan Ferry at The Bottom Line in NYC in 1977. Ferry was touring in support of a solo album, either "Let's Stick Together" (I think) or possibly "In Your Mind", with Spedding on guitar. A great show. I did not have a ticket so stood on Standing Room Only line all da,y with the benefit of getting an autograph from Ferry after the sound check at midday. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 01:15:08 EDT From: AMeyersLD@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] US/CA Tour "Update" In a message dated 6/22/01 11:07:05 PM, sommers@sfo.com writes: << I happened to notice today that the only tickets (through Ticketmaster anyway) left for any of the North American venues are Camden and Vancouver - -- not coincidentally, the two largest venues booked. Kirby lifted Demon from an old Prince Valiant page from the first years. In order to start a debate, and some of my British friends like Guy on the this list have heard this before :-), IMHO Kirby is vastly overrated. Very little of his work is of merit. But I am in a minority on this. Of the American comicbook artists working in the 40's to 60's, very few can be considered geniuses. Carl Barks and Harvey Kurtzman are the prime examples. Kriegstein is good in a few stories. If we expand the picture to newspaper strips and comics, I would include Milton Caniff, Will Eisner, Walt Kelly and Alex Raymond. Others, like Steve Ditko, Jim Steranko and most of the Golden Age artists that I've read, are people that are readable, but not great. Carl Barks is the true artist. His ducks have made a cultural impact that is without parallell in Europe. I like the EC comics from the 50's as well.
