It's brave to drop "Avalon" if it does not work. "In Every Dreamhome A Heartache" is one of the best songs and they are right to preform it. Of the eight songs on "Viva!", five are performed, the three missing are "Pyjamarama", "The Bogus Man" and "Chance Meeting". I thought that "Chance Meeting" would be included since Bryan Ferry performed it on the ATGB tour. What I would like is an new unexpected cover as when they did Neil Youngs "Like A Hurricane". Of the five concerts I found setlists for it runs like this: Glasgow Re-make/Re-model, Street Life, Ladytron, While My Heart Is Still Beating, Out Of The Blue, A Song For Europe, My Only Love, Oh Yeah, Both Ends Burning, Tara, Avalon, If There Is Something, More Than This, Mother Of Pearl, Jealous Guy, Editions Of You, Virginia Plain, Love Is The Drug, Do The Strand, For Your Pleasure. Speaking shortly after receiving his GCSE results Jepson said "These guys are well over 50, don't you know, and shouldn't even be out after 9pm never mind performing live". Mr Jepson said the band were planning to cushion the blow for their aging followers by providing oxygen masks, hearing aids, national health spectacles and a new range of zimmer frames for use in stadia, which has been designed especially by the groups lead singer for the tour. Mr Jepson added that even the reduced set would be a strain for the group and periodically they'd be flown to Helsinki to spend some time in the Lasse Viren clinic. Mr Jepson denied that a compilation of the groups songs from the last century called 'Singalonga Roxy' aimed at the over 30's market would be released early in the new year, although he didn't deny that a new single with a working title of 'I slipped my disco', was at an advanced, and fairly senile stage. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 09:34:12 +0100 From: "Simon Galloway" Subject: [AVALON] Wembley - more free tix + the strike! The set-lists have already been well documented, but I'll add my own personal comments to them. Don't read any further if you don't want to know the content of the show!! This is a long post Just like Simon G, I'm Sheffield "born and bred", so even though the Sheffield tickets were booked as an afterthought it was still well worth it. Manchester was a different "kettle of fish" - thanks to my girlfriend queuing at the venue on the day that tickets went on sale, she managed to secure the "Holy Grail" - front row tickets, so now it was not longer "out of reach". This is what I had been waiting for like everyone else for 18 years. A huge curtain covered the width and depth of the stage. On the curtain was the Roxy "Imperial Eagle". The words "Roxy Music" projected onto the curtain. The lights drop to the start of South Downs. The first couple of rows on ground level surge forward. Luckily at Manchester we'd managed to get straight to the barrier as soon as the lights went out - six feet of air separated us from Andy and Bryan with no one in front of us.. The first chords of "Remake-Remodel" strike out as the curtain rises. A huge screen behind the band projects Bryan singing. In Sheffield we were seated in the lower tier, stage left so at first we couldn't figure out where he was all we could see was the huge screen until we saw Bryan on keyboards at the back on the left of the stage. Colin Good was also at the rear left of the stage. Manzo left front, Andy Mackay right front. The Great Paul Thompson towards the rear of the stage with Chris Spedding and Zef Katz to the left and right of him. Lucy and Julia were towards the rear at the right hand side. Sarah Brown at the front towards the left of stage. Great opening number, Manzo going crazy with his guitar-work towards the end of it. Manzo dressed in a light beige linen suit. Andy Mackay in classy purple/deep blue suit, the jacket being "overlength", shirt and tie - looked well smart. The stage set was quite simple, with what looked like "vine leaves/ivy" on the various "podiums" - anyway we were here for the Music The crowds were greeted with the usual "It's great to be back in Sheffield/Manchester" again. Bryan didn't say very much during both gigs but it was satisfying that during the proceedings he introduced the drummer as THE GREAT Paul Thompson, who got one of the biggest cheers of the evening(s). Forget about Star Trek, this bands engine room is manned by TGPT and we're going warp-speed Roxy At this point Bryan was in white shirt, nice cufflinks, silk trousers (I think), Silver Tuxedo and what looked like "lizard/snake skin" shoes. Then at various points in the set changes as follows: Change of white shirt and into the classic white tux. Then Black leather jacket (Manchester only) Then Grey silk shirt (Manchester only) At this point, the running order of the set-list may be becomes in-accurate - although I'll give my own views on each song. "This is Roxy Music" Bryan announces, Streetlife - fantastic - it's been commented that Bryan had a sore throat during these gigs but I think his voice was spot on. Ladytron - another great choice. Haunting work from Andy at the start Heart Still Beating - good, but a bit of a lame choice in my opinion. Out of the Blue - one of the highlights of the evening - - look out for the great violin solo from Lucy Wilkins. Song For Europe - this is one that I'd personally wanted to see. Once again some great work by Andy Mackay - some of the words can literally bring tears to your eye - All those moments, lost in wonder, that we'll never find again Seeing this takes you back to those days when maybe you heard it for the first time. My Only Love - gave Chris Spedding the change to provide us with a long-ish guitar solo. On Yeah - OK Dreamhome - another classic - rather have this than "Avalon" - yes we did all wait for the "you blew my mind" bit! Both Ends Burning - great - Andy's ripping saxophone work, the backdrop of flames on the rear projection screen an the appearance for the first time of the "Dancing Girls" - about four of them at the rear of the stage, dressed in what I can best describe as "Cheerleaders" outfits. Tara - gave the rest of the band a bit of a breather whilst the spotlight fell on Andy to provide us with some more haunting saxophone work. If There Is Something (Sheffield Only) - really nice to hear this as it brought back memories of "Viva Roxy Music" with a very Twangy guitar sound at the start. This was unfortunately dropped for the Manchester show. Mother Of Pearl - yet another one I wanted to see - Get ready for those "woo-woos" at the start. It seemed to draw to a bit of a pre-mature end when the majority of the crowd assumed that the song had finished when Bryan was still doing his final "Mother of Pearl" lines at the end. Fantastic. Jealous Guy - for me not one of the highlights as it's been played everywhere so many times - but still got one of the biggest cheers of the evening when the intro started. Editions of You - definite highlight - get ready for the "slinky sirens wail wooh" Virginia Plain - very nice indeed - Ferry seemed genuinely taken aback with the crowd response to this especially the "what's her name" bit Love is the drug - nice again - suppose it's one of those numbers that has to be in the set Do the Strand - complete with all the usual gestures from Bryan and the "Can Can Dancers on stage" would have been a great way to end the show - but wait there was more. For Your Pleasure- not an obvious choice for the last number, but it gives the crowd the chance to show their appreciation for each member of the band. Very subtle - "old man, with every step you take I see you walk away" and unfortunately we do. All the band one-by-one gradually leave the stage Huge cheer for the Great Paul Thompson who genuinely seemed shocked by the amount of feedback he was getting from the crowd. Also a huge cheer for Lucy. Throughout the whole set the whole band looked like they were enjoying themselves, Manzo gave plenty of smiles, Andy was reserved but cool with it. Sound balance was OK in Sheffield and excellent in Manchester. Some old bits of equipment (e.g keyboards) were used that were probably from the 70's. I'd heard that the band were looking to merge a classical modern approach with the "raw" sound from the 70's - it all worked spot on. The curtain drops and it's all over. Let's hope we don't have to wait another 18 years for a repeat dose. Aleks Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Hi RM fans, I have a question about the set list for the RM concerts. I was reading SimonG's list form the Sheffield concert. I want to buy tickets for the upcoming Toronto concert, but I notice my all time favorite RM song, "More Than This" is not on the list. I think I asked this question a long time ago and I can't remember if anyone ever answered it. Why doesn't RM/BF like performing "More Than This" live??? I think it was one of the best songs ever written and was hoping that they would perform it live. I know that it was one of their most successful songs (in the charts) in North America. Still it kind of disappointing when a classic is not performed. Especially when I had to wait so long for a RM concert. Does anyone know the reason why??? Thanks, Tom ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 12:05:59 -0400 From: Bruce MacQueen Subject: [AVALON] Philly to Camden Help!!! I need some help on mid Atlantic logistics. Can some one let me know if it is as simple as it looks to get from the 30th Street Station in Philly across the river to The Tweeter Center? Is there public transportation or is it a reasonable cab ride? My only option to get there is by train and I'd like to know. Also how long does the show run currently 1-1/2 - 2 hours? I have a train to catch, don't you know! Thanks. From what I am remembering that I read here, it's because the key was a bit difficult for Mr. Ferry? Is that right? And then it was transposed for the tour, but I guess it's not working out (I've been only skimming the show reviews since I'm trying to retain some sense of mystery for my own attendance next month). I tried a quick search of the archives at www.smoe.org/lists/avalon, but I don't really have the time to spend on it, but I am sure the info for both items is somewhere in the last 6 weeks or so.
