There are some articles here http://www.avalongroup.freeuk.com/ which is the home page for the list, and many more can be found on the sites linked to from that site. In addition, the archives of the list for the last few years (the earlier stuff is lost in the ether) can be found at http://www.smoe.org/lists/avalon/. It's not the best way to read back issues as it were since you can't search, but if you have time, it's a way to get a feel for the particular taste of this list. Re-Make Re-Model / Street Life / Ladytron / While My Heart Is Still Beating / Out Of The Blue / A Song For Europe / My Only Love / Oh Yeah / Both Ends Burning / In Every Dream Home A Heartache / Tara / If There Is Something / Mother Of Pearl / Jealous Guy / Editions Of You / Virginia Plain / Love Is The Drug / Do The Strand / For Your Pleasure. I was beginning to wonder exactly why I had bought tickets for Sheffield Arena, that day in February when I made the decision seemed so long ago. I mean a Tuesday! It meant taking time off work and driving up from London, but at least a place to sleep wouldn9t be a problem, just call on my mum and dad! So, days off were booked, plans made to see various friends and family and... oh, the Roxy concert! By the time we were walking into the arena all the silly thoughts stopped, and I remembered just why I wanted to be at THIS show - it9s my hometown, it9s where I grew up, and I grew up listening to Roxy, from day one (and I really do mean day one, it9s amazing the influence older brothers and sisters can have). Rosalie Deighton was... tuneful but forgetful (signed to the same label as Travis who also suffer from that very same condition at times) and quite pretty I thought. She9s definitely got a Bry obsession (3ooh, this is his mic, phwoooar2 etc). As previously stated, I thought she was more Sheryl Crow/Alannis Morissette on HRT! She9s obviously got a lot to say as there were lots of wordy lyrics, but it just washed over. Bill M was spotted so myself and Lee wandered over for a little chat and he kindly took our photo (coming soon to a Crimewatch programme near you!). He told us More Than This had been dropped, we speculated that it may have been something to do with a sandwich. A nice lady in the front row politely asked us to 3shift2 our 3arses2. Ah, Sheffield. South Downs drifted through the PA and that was the cue to rise to our feet in unison, a load of people ran to the front, but we were OK from our 4th row, centre stage seats. Then the tinkle of glasses, chatter. OH MY GOD THIS IS IT!!! The curtain lifted to reveal a confident, strutting Roxy. I froze on the spot and could hardly sing or cheer, if I had I would have broken down completely, during Street Life especially. It9s funny how I couldn9t give my all time favourite song of all time a big cheer. Those first three were a blur, a real rocking sound without time to take a breath. The rest? You know it by now, but a few comments... Colin9s extended intro to A Song For Europe I thought was unnecessary, and more to the point sounded like Elton f*cking John. His keyboard work on Dreamhome was also a little too jolly and flowery and out of time in places, but he made up for it with Tara and FYP. I couldn9t see Julia but appreciated her little percussive touches, particularly on Both Ends Burning and Mother Of Pearl. Lucy is pure Roxy, an honorary member. She twiddled at those synths furiously and of course gave Jobson a run for his money. The one I observed with a cautious eye was Sarah Brown, and I have to say that I thought she was very good. She didn9t go over the top and waily, but tastefully added reinforcement where needed, and let9s face it, Bry9s voice ain9t what it used to be! He9s singing well though and will probably improve just like he did on the ATGB tour. Phil was excellent, Spedding9s backing allows him to just let go that little bit and gives him the freedom to add the little atmospheric touches just like on the records. His playing is much more controlled and assured than it used to be, but he still managed to pull a few tricks out of the bag, Ladytron especially where he nearly took the guitar over his head Hendrix stylee! And he looked cool too. The other star was Paul Thompson. Without him this would be average, but he really does drive the band to another level, he didn9t miss a beat, there at every twist and turn. Who needs poodle drummers when this man can do the lot, and give 100 percent ALL the time?!?!? The set list is almost all 70s now, with only 5 80s tunes making it through. It9s hard to pick stand out moments, but there were a few songs where I just thought WOW - the first three, A Song For Europe, If There Is Something, Mother Of Pearl and the fuzzed up keyboard on Editions Of You (they9ve obviously been listening to the Mudhoney cover). And despite all I9ve heard and read, For Your Pleasure was simply amazing. It hit me when Andy left the stage that this will be the final fling, his face said it all, as the tara9s repeated he gave a wave and was gone, very sad. TGPT received the longest applause out of them all. And that's how I lost my live Roxy virginity, it was over far too soon and I9m really looking forward to the Wembley shows so that i can soak it in a bit more. Roxy Rule OK? OK! Although I have been trying hard not to read anything about the concerts already played on this tour (and list members have been helpful with putting things like "REVIEW" in the subject line), I couldn't help noticing that the song "Avalon" was dropped from the setlist at one or more of the UK shows. Why oh why? Has it been added back for subsequent shows? I know everyone has their own favorite Roxy song; this one may or may not be mine (it's so hard to choose!), but it definitely was my introduction to Roxy, and I'd certainly feel the show was incomplete without it. Now the off-topic. I had been intending to take a vacation trip to the UK and Ireland this year, but with the Hoof And Mouth crisis having shut down a number of my desinations, I haven't made any firm plans yet. Has the epidemic subsided enough yet that things like Stonehenge have been reopened? The warmer weather acts as a kind of natural suppression to the virus', preventing new outbreaks. Most attractions in the West are now open, Longleat and Cheddar for example. In fact, as today was the Summer solstice, Stonehenge was invaded by about 500 woodsmoke-scented soap-dodgers 'getting in tune with the cosmic vibe, man' It's only about 15 miles from where I live. I can honestly say that I saw more evidence of Foot and Mouth prevention in three days in Dublin than I saw in the last three months in South west England, although my experience might not be typical. Back on topic, I would think that Avalon was dropped because frankly, in an otherwise excellent tour, it was a pretty limp rendition.
