This was a show where Eno was altering all the other instruments-everything was being treated so it took some getting used to (not for me). Tull fans were NOT into it and basically booed them a lot. I'm not even sure if they played a complete set. My memory is that it was a fine show by RM and I'm happy to have been there. A year or so later-RM toured the USA as a headline band (right after Eno left-and Stranded was released). I saw that tour at the Academy of Music (with Sharks as opening band-and of course Chris Spedding was Sharks' guitarist-along with a special guest guitarist-Leslie West of Mountain). Roxy received a heroes welcome at this show. It holds a special place in my heart as my friend Sal Maida was Roxy's bass player for this tour. My friends and I had about 20 seats in 2nd a 3rd row center for the show. john ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 16:07:26 +0100 From: "A.L. I attended all those shows Terry, we must get together for that beer, soon! In fact, prior to the first night at the Bingley Hall (what a dump!) in '75 (I think there were two from memory) a former girlfirend and I met Bryan at the Albany Hotel. I'd entered a competition in the Birmingham Evening Mail to meet him to win 2 tickets for the concert and a signed copy of 'Siren'. Thinking they'd probably pick a female I sent the entry in her name and Bingo!. We were told to meet Adrienne Hunter (Ferry's PR Asst I believe) at the Albany at 6pm. She took us up to Ferry's suite on the 6th floor. We were both 17 at the time and nervous as kittens. It was strange because as we got out of the lift I saw this guy dressed in a blue denim shirt and Levi's - standing in his Hotel Room doorway - it was Bryan of course but we didn't recognise him (without his makeup!) he looked so young. Anyway she introduced us - Bryan seemed genuinely shy and reserved - I remember he had the TV on with the sound off. He asked us how we'd won the competition and we had a few minutes brief chat with him but he then said he had to go as Roxy were having a pre-show meeting. My girlfriend had her photo taken with Bry which I've still got - plus the signed copy of 'Siren' of course! On leaving, Bryan said something typically vague like "I'll be seeing you then" and quick as a flash I said "Yes, later of course" at which he laughed and said " Oh, Yeah" (must have been where he got the title from!) The seats were front row and he gave us a wave of acknowledgement, which was nice. Before the show, Adi Hunter took us to the Albany bar and introduced us to Simon Puxley and others whose names I can't recall. They bought us drinks (we didn't let on we were only 17 - and certainly not trash!) and gave us a few badges etc. I still have the red and blue with gold trim metal badge somewhere - "Roxy Music". I've not thought about this for years and it's funny the insignificant little things that you remember. My girlfriend fancied Andy at the time and I remember she was dead jealous of Adi (who seemed incredibly sophisticated) because Adi was wearing these enormous but fantastic gold saxophone earrings! We were then given a lift to the Bingley Hall (which is where Symphony Hall now stands give or take an inch) in one of Roxy's Black Limos, which was soooo exciting! And what a show. 'Siren' hadn't been released in advance from memory but was on sale after the shows. So when a number of ghostly figures appeared and started 'tuning' up, we thought what the hell's goin' on. Then ......"surely you cannot be leading .....you know the rest ....I don't think that will ever be topped - but you never know! Just to bring this particular tale to an end, I hadn't seen my Ex since '83.......so who should tap me on the shoulder during the show on Saturday night at the NEC? She had seen my two children boppin' away at the front and had then noticed me - she congratulated me in rearing them in the 'Art of Roxy', as apparently her children won't even listen to them never mind attend concerts! Hrm. I think I can do it - I've converted at least a dozen people into Buffy fans and they, in turn, converted more people. I'm very enthusiastic and persuasive. I've also turned people into Divine Comedy fans (before their crappy last album). Time to start planning who I will convert.... Does encouraging people's current enthusiasm count? I have a couple of fans who were sorta into RM and I encouraged them to get more into the band and gave them copies of the albums. The opening salvo of Remake/Remodel, Street Life and Ladytron set the scene for what was going to be a memorable two hours. The power of the live Roxy hit hard from the off. With TGPT in his rightful place, each song was driven from beginning to end by two powerful hands, two powerful feet, an inordinate amount of feel and a real love for the music. Sound was good from Block B/Row S and the crowd gave the band a big dose of support. The lady next to my girlfriend nearly blew up when Bryan took his jacket off. This was a complete band in action, enjoying themselves and their creations and as they say class is permament, form is temporary. Funny coincidence: the bass player from Roxy's Stranded tour, Sal Maida, also spent some time playing bass for Sparks (appears on the "Big Beat" album.) j ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 18:40:30 -0000 From: "kaye grovess" Subject: [none] Hi do you know if it is possible to receive info in list form rather than individual mail messeages, if so please advise how it can be done. thanks in advance roxypiglet _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 20:46:11 +0200 From: "Sebastian Fasthuber" Subject: Re: [AVALON] sparks alert!
