The morning after. Oh what a state to be in. Some made it down for breakfast. Some didn't. I was in the latter. Home town for me though it was, no time to meet up with anyone from my distant past, as it was onward to Newcastle. A tired bunch in the car, a late, late night it had been. Briefly woke ourselves up, by deciding to sing a chorus of 'Blue Eyes' on the journey, especially for our chaffeur. He was less than thrilled, but it's the thought that counts, ain't it ? Into Newcastle a few hours later, and after the obligatory 2 minute check the hotel situation, it was out on a cashpoint and Record Shop hunt. These are a dangerous double, as Ivor found out. I didn't buy anything this time - so note that in your diary, folks ("REECEY IN NO-SPENDING SPREE IN RECORD SHOP HORROR - IS HE ILL" ?) Pre-gig drinks and chats in the Bar as ever, the longest travelled Avalonian for this tour was already there - step forward our Australian friend Mr. Lehman. On to the Gig, met all and sundry, the usual suspects of course, much excited chatter. Great Gig - down the front from the off, and the Band are getting tighter, tighter. You'll all have read the reviews elsewhere, of course. A 'what to do, where to go' situation afterwards, which turned into a 'Bar in our Hotel, then' situation. Much late night Gig/Tour chatter later, with myself, Ivor, Andrew, Patricia, Jocelyn, Lindsay, Glen, Chris, Diane, John, Tracy. There may have been more - but the memory is fading - this was a week ago ! Ended up as just 4 of us putting the world to rights into the very early hours. Staggering down to breakfast the next morning, and the first leg of the tour, for our merry band anyway, was all but over. Just the drive south to London next to contend with. And now we were three, as Jocelyn was stopping off in Newcastle for a few days. A brief stop on the way out of town to see the 'Angel Of The North' to which someone's architectural observation was 'nice Arse'. On the way back, we stopped at one of those big service stations which sell very little petrol, large amounts of bad food, and a lot of complete crap. We bought a lot of complete crap. Quite why I came out of there with some Wind Chimes, I really don't know. But we did get an Abba tape from the bargain bin, which kept the three of us singing happily all the way home. For just a second, I WAS Agnetha. Apparently. And that was that. A week on the road with friends. Passing through five countries, covering over 1000 miles by Car, having very little sleep, and a lot of party-time wasting. And, just to put the icing on the cake - hey, we all saw our fave Band in the world a few times too. And some people think we're crazy. I'd do it all again. Tara. Reecey... Manifesto was their highest charting album here. They never achieved the huge status they did over there, however. While they were filling stadiums in Europe they played smaller 2000-3000 seat venues here. Kind of lucky for us in a way though because the shows were all very intimate. At one show that I saw Bryan opened for the J. Geils Band, more of a co-headliner than an opener. The Cars, who had not released an album yet, actually came on first. J.Geils were a local favorite because they were from Boston and the druken crowd, most of whom did not know who Ferry was, tried to boo him off the stage when he came back for an encore. After the trumpet player did the littel opening to The Price Of Love, Bryan stood there for a moment with his arm in the air, listenening to the crowd booing, but he heard enough of his followers cheering him on and dropped his arm kicking in the song to finish his set. That was on the In Your Mind tour. Forgive them Lord, for they knew not who they were booing.
