When I went to the gig at the Birmingham NEC last Saturday, I had a look around the venue to see if there were any fans in their twenties and I couldn't see any. The fans seemed to be in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Nothing wrong with that of course. In fact, there was a good looking female fan sitting next to me who have been in her mid 30s. I was disappointed that they didn't play Avalon, All I want Is You and Dance Away, Thrill of it All and Bitter Sweet. To a youngster like me, it was quite comical but I don't mean that in a bad way. For instance, the people in the first 2 rows of the arena were allowed to go up the barriers and I noticed the reactions of some of the middle aged women when Bryan Ferry was on the stage. It was akin to someone going to see Ton Jones and Rod Stewart in concert. Also, Andy Mackay was wearing this suit where the jacket came down to his knees. It made him look like one of those old fashioned lavatory attendants. It also looked as though Andy had no neck. I don't know if that was something to do with the suit but it looked quite funny when he was hunched over his saxophone. Nevertheless, he is a good saxophonist. There was some great guitar work from Chris Spedding and Phil Manzanera. All in all, a very good gig but I wonder this will be their very last world tour. Judging by the reaction of the fans maybe not. What was everyone's opinion of the support act? Yes, because everyone knows that a middle-aged woman of 30 has given up her interest in sex and focuses all of her attention on her new walker. I think a lot of younger people forget that Roxy were a big influence on artist such as Radiohead, Moby and many other indie bands as well as New Romantic groups such as Japan, Duran Duran, ABC and Spandau Ballet. I tend to listen to a lot of 80s synthpop/new romantic/indie stuff such as Ultravox, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, and many more. From what I remember, Ferry had this arrangement on a previous tour (Mamouma I think). I don't know how heavy-handed the security has been, but there are no doubt safety considerations in only allowing a certain amount of people to the front of the venues. I'd read loads of reviews but the moment those first bars of RM-RM filled the arena I was a gibbering wreck! An incredibly emotional moment. Yeah, Roxy are back! They were totally brilliant. Utter perfection. Sunday night we were revving because we had front row seats. A few sweet memories...... Ferry playing, arm and leg raised during EOY. He can still do it! Colin Good's awesome intro to ASFE. Ferry's obvious enjoyment of the whole thing. God, what energy! Andy and Spedding's glum looks (at times)! Phil's amazing coolness when his guitar went during The Strand! I just can't get the whole thing out of my head! I was 17 again! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 18:13:29 +0100 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Kim Wilde Last week I was watching a gardening programme on BBC 1's morning schedule called Garden Invaders - real trash TV.
