Well Saturday has been and gone and I'm totally convinced - FYP works brilliantly. A magical end to a magical show. Last night's gig at the NEC was my first of the tour and how the years just rolled away. Much has been written about this and earlier gigs, so I won't add much. The songs sounded so fresh - performed with huge enthusiasm by all band members. Aside from the low-profile beginning, Ferry's stage presence showed that he has taken up where he left off at the end of his own tour last year - masterful. But above all this is a group performance - and an absolutely brilliant one. I'm still buzzing - and woke up this morning to yet another highly complimentary newspaper review (this time in the Mail on Sunday), which rates the Newcastle gig as "5 stars" (out of 5!) Last night I had to go to the last preview of "Could It Be Magic" a review "based on the Barry Manilow Songbook," here in Chicago. (I had to go for business reasons, as several freinds of mine are on the production team...really!) The show is a cabaret/review, with five appealing young B'way types slickly directed by BM and two directors from the old Carol Burnett show. Very slick, actually very entertaining. I mention this for a couple of reasons (other than to indulge all the closet "fanilows" on this list.) It was fascinating to see a performer in his mid 50's create a song-and-dance show based around his work. I can think of a number of carreer singers who could go this route...At the bar later some of the crew and I tried to think of who would benefit most from a show like this...I suggested Bryan Ferry, Richard Thompson, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello. The crew, a more jaded lot, decided that Iggy Pop would be a better choice. It was a pleasant surprise that BM deliberately slighted all of his big hit (a mere 16 bars of "Mandy", as a joke) in favour of lesser known tunes. It was an even more pleasant surprise to find that BM culls his songs from pretty far-flung sources including MeatLoaf and Mott The Hoople! I drove home imagining what a "Bryan Ferry Songbook" Broadway review would be like... Happy Fathers Day! After a mad dash from the Gardeners World show to the hotel, and then back to the NEC (2 style icons - Alan Tichmarsh & Bryan Ferry in one day!) we just about made it to hear the opening of the support act. I don't know what they were called to be honest but they sounded remarkably like the Corrs (which encouraged me to hang around the bar areas and indulge in a belated lager frenzy.) Trotted into the hall during the interval - and promptly trotted back out to the loos (did I mention I have the bladder of a 4-year-old?) To run or not to run? That is the question, weather it is nobler to miss the start of the show or look like a panicking fool? - better compromise and fast-walk. After zipping up and scurrying out of the loo I bumped into, who is now, my candidate for best dressed Roxy fan that evening. Dressed in a very authentic looking G.I. shirt with spot-on Roxy patch on the upper arm, tie tucked in at an appropriately high button - very impressed! Made it back to my seat in time for the lights to dim... the words ROXY MUSIC to become even more prominent against the new logo-ed curtain...the "sonic" build-up...the chattering intro...the curtain to fall away to reveal both the urgent, twisted, mangled, majesty that is Re-make/Re-modelled, and the band that is its creator. The fact that Bryan was seated to the rear on keyboards really brought it home to me that there was a distinct difference between the solo tours I have attended and this...this was a glimpse at the Roxy I have only been able to see on the Total Recall video etc, all recorded before I was old enough, and wise enough, to see the classic line-ups. An initial onslaught of early material ensued, all sounding fresh and new (at least to my virgin ears.) Lucy once again did the biz on OOTB - Phil turned in some amazing solos- especially on Dreamhome (I realised how much I had underrated him in the top guitar-man stakes,) AM must have been replaced by an android since the TOTP2 performance. Paul Thompson gave the material all the necessary kicks in backside and really put his stamp on the latter stuff. When Bryan name-checked him to the audience as "The Great Paul Thompson" the crowd erupted, a genuinely nice touch. Speaking of later stuff, the weaker points of the set (in this context you understand!) was IMO the later work, with the exception of Tara, both the audience and the band seamed to get more out of the earlier material and strangely BF's vocals seamed more at home (although it was good to finally get to hear More Than This live!) Also to finally get to hear MOP live was a highlight for me, the intro really kicked the proverbial and was delivered with the urgency ill-befitting a band in the wrong side of 50! Indeed it was hard to remember that this was a reunion tour of a band that had spilt 18 years earlier! Another highlight...Bryans little solo thingy on Editions of You, where he rushes off to play a little one handed skit on the organ, this always raises a smile for me on the Total Recall video, and indeed this evening my grin was from ear to ear. FYP - what a master-stroke, at last the finale to a concert that I have been praying for, no rushed DTS, but rather a poignant farewell from a band who had seriously entertained a captive audience for the best part of 30 years. The "sonic" out-ro (for want of a better word) was as alien and futuristic in 2001 as it was in 1973 - not many bands can make (and live up to) a claim like that. Cheers (if you are still here.) They discuss the eternal lost romantic theme of Byron's lyrics and remind us that if only he'd tried to be a bit more like everyone else of the time, ala Francis Rossi, then he wouldn't keep getting ditched. One or two Avalonian's can empathise with this I'm sure. Then again Ferry was always a fan of white socks and waistcoats. Hmmmmm... As before the bouncer were insistent on good behaviour; no standing or going to the front. This was exasperating as Jim Lawn had told me that Bryan and the band much appreciated people being at the front; however after 1/2 an hour or so, bryan said ,'let these people come down to the front' and I was off in a flash!! This time standing to the left of Phil; was a boisterous drunken melee behind me. At times the behavoiur of the crowd was almost too exuberant and became unintentionally, but physically threatening. One womwan fainted and was carried over the barrier and spirited away. As each gig goes by, Bryan and the gang grow more and more in confidence. I think that it says a great deal for their integrity, despite what many have said about the perceived money- grubbing nature of the enterprise, that the emphasis is on the early non- commercial material. A lot of people will go home from many a gig on this tour, disappointed as they expected a 'greatest hits' RM and didn't get it. Bryan's still relaxed and in good from as he misses his cue during 'Editions of you', but is still able to laugh in Phil's direction, who gives a wry smile in return! The sound, it has to be siad , was better than in Dublin, but my earlier criticisms of BEB and Avalon, still hold. All too soon it was over and we all scurried homeward, glad of an early night, this time 'round.. N'castle beckons and I arrive in plenty of time to take in the ambience of Bryan's (almost) hometown. I too, spent time at Uni here, over 20 years sgo and like Glasgow, it has changed for the better; the dockland area in particular. Gratefully, meeting up with Tracy Connell, we repair to a pub for refreshment and meet up with some of the usual suspects. Off to the Arena, we reconnoitre with other Avalonians. Another relaxed performance and while Avalonis still not quite right, Bryan seems pleased with the performance and intriduces TGPT as 'my fellow Geordie'- not strictly true, but, hey who's bothered!! Good news from Nottingham that Avalon's been dropped and that 'In Every dreamhome's' been added. Off to Birmingham, for the Sat concert; delayed flight and torrential rain somewhat detracting from the experience. Who said that touring was glamourous- it is most definitely not!!However, once inside the arena and meeting up with Reecey, Jocelyn, Chris, Ivor, Steve and Sue etc, the fire of my obsesesion is immediatley re- ignited!! Noticing too that the legendary FYP t -shirt is on sale, really gets me going until that is, I discover that they are sold out!! Scunner!! Maybe, I'll get lucky at Wembley... The bouncers at this gig are of a similar ilk to those earlier in the tour and only the first 2 rows are permitted to go to the front- I languish in row Y, trying to make the best of it. I note with some self- congratulatory pleasure that Bryan must have taken note of my previous comments (!!) vis a vis the conflicting Spedding solo and harmonica solo on BEB. They've been taken out completely and replaced with a Manzanera solo instead. Phil, btw has been outstanding tonight and had a blistering solo during Ladytron. Tonight, Bryan does not go through the 3 jackets routine but stops at 2 as he's obviously feeling the heat, favouring his white shirt and black trousers. Thankfully, the dancing girls only appear in the backgroung during BEB and for the Do the Strand routine. As I think I've said before, I do not think that they enhance the overall experience, but then again, some of the guys may disagree! The backing singer, Sarah Brown seemed to be mixed higher and did a good job, in an expanded role, for 'My Only Love', although she did seem to drown Bryan out at times. In 'Every dreamhome..' was perfect although Bryan left the final say to Sarah. In essence, Birmingham was if anything better than the previous gigs..god knows what they'll be like by September...awesome, of the there's no doubt!! With a broadcast of a concert that weekend also on R2 it should be worth tuning in for more mentions...along with the following weekend as he likes to chat about his weeks activates. For all you overseas chaps he's quite funny & worth a listen anyway.
