I enjoyed it at the time, but neither tour or album matched what had gone before and the backing singers really did not help though by no means as bad as the Sirens in '75. I attended the Glasgow and Edinburgh shows on that tour and have about 10 shows on cd from almost all legs of the tour, they all sound identical in that the band was well rehearsed, but lacked the energy that Roxy always put into their gigs. It looks like we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one Jonathan, but I am glad that the folk who only ever saw Roxy on that tour are getting the chance to see something of what Roxy were really like at last. Hey everyone! On the same week that one of our members volunteered to transcribe the massive 1978 Melody Maker feature (big round of applause for Paul) for my site, Always Unknowing, I acquired a few more copies of the "unlicensed" CD EAST SIDE, which is the 1979 Philadelphia show heard on the King Biscuit Flower Hour. This is a commercially-available (although it probably shouldn't be) CD, labelled in a jewelcase with color artwork. So I got a nice idea. I have four copies up for grabs. (Paul gets the fifth!) You, yes, YOU! can have one of the remaining four if you're willing to: 1) Transcribe a Roxy or Ferry-related article of decent length which I don't already have on my site 2) Send me a SASE 3) Go read my online comics If this sounds like something you're interested in, read the short rules below. Otherwise, click and move on; nothing to see here. If you want to enter the contest, pop by my site and make sure I don't already have the article you'd like to transcribe. There are a few sub-rules: a) it can't be from Melody Maker. I have enough of those. b) it shouldn't be online anywhere else. Obviously I can't check everywhere, but any press regarding the current tour is probably already on Manzanera's site, so people can already read it there. c) it should be somewhat lengthy and interesting, so visitors will have something good to sink their teeth into. "Articles" like that stupid "review" of The Right Stuff on my site really aren't what I'm looking for. Interviews or 500+ word record/concert reviews are best. d) my site doesn't have nearly enough material from the NME. e) I've never read any of the tabloid/gossip/gutter press regarding Ferry in the mid-70s f) if possible, your transcription should include the date, source and author of the story. The first four people to tell me what they have - don't start transcribing yet - and meet the requirement will be declared winners. Then they just need to snail-mail me a SASE and e-mail me a text copy (or HTML) of the article. You must also send me a short note about the three GMS Legion episodes currently online, what you thought, what you liked, etc. The note just needs to be enough to prove you actually read it. It's no good saying "I liked it," or "Frankly your penmanship was so appalling I couldn't bear to finish the first page," or "Lee Sullivan draws much prettier pictures than you" or that sort. I'd prefer to know you actually read them! (And hopefully, you'll enjoy them so much you'll be a fan for life and buy my shtuff.) The winners will have a note on the page crediting them as "transcribed by." They'll also have a nifty CD, a pat on the back they'll have to administer themselves, and a general feeling that they've done good, having presented more fun articles for fans to read. If you'd like to join the contest, the sites you'll need are: Always Unknowing: http://www.geocities.com/gmslegion/ferry.html The GMS Legion: http://www.geocities.com/gmslegion/gms.html Good luck! I attended the gig it the ice stadium in Nottingham last night, and what a thrill it was to see my favourite band together on stage again after so long. There have been one or two weary and blase comments about the reunion on the list in recent weeks, but hey, this is Roxy Music in front of me, firing on all freakin' cylinders, with the great Paul Thompson in tow! Who would have thought that this time last year? The sound for the opener 'Remake Remodel' was a more than a little muffled, and looking at the cavernous arena and the corrugated material roofing, I must admit I feared the worst, however by 'Ladytron' (the 3rd number) the mixing desk guys had worked their magic. Having seen the set list in advance on the avalon list, I was slightly concerned that my less 'album aware' friends attending with me - seven of us - would be disappointed, but they were all absolutely enchanted. I attended the TOTP 2 riverside recording (thanks Reecey!) and thought, like others, that Andy Mackay looked laboured - at times his face colour matched his purple suit - but tonight looking a few pounds lighter, his playing reminded me of what a vital cog in the roxy mix he is. With four of tonights songs being Ferry/Mackay co-writes, successful sales of a live album could bring some serious royalty cheques! Chris Spedding - forget the lean leather-clad icon of 1975 - now has the appearance of the man in charge of the waltzer at the end of Southend pier! ('the louder you scream, girls, the faster it goes' !!!), but his solo on 'My Only Love' was absolutely immaculate and I can't help thinking, as articulated elsewhere by a fellow avalonian, that he's playing a restrained role but is a caged tiger waiting to be unleashed. Perhaps later in the tour. The set was beautifully staged and paced, a mixture of early belters and later 'textured' songs - mainly album tracks - and it appears that 'More than this' - - two-thirds into the gig - is becoming the time to get on your feet and (in my case) head for the front for 'Love is the Drug', 'Mother of Pearl', 'Jealous Guy', 'Do the Strand' etc. The finale of 'For Your Pleasure' (one of my faves) is astonishing - only Roxy could get away with it! I'm still hopeful that whatever differences the chaps had in 1984 can be overcome and that we could look forward to an 'organically recorded' album of new material - but FYP did have an air of '...the end'. Avalonians of North America, Australasia and Europe, you are in for a treat... I felt this keenly whilst picking my way through the building works around Nottingham's Broad Marsh, where 19th century railway viaducts are finally succumbing to 21st century re- development. The parts of Nottingham that I loved when I grew up and lived in the city still exist but, increasingly, only in my memory. Would this also hold true tonight for the main thing? The Arena itself is new and replaces the old, red brick Ice Stadium. Quite apart from catering for aspiring Torvil and Deans, it finally gives Nottingham a venue with a capacity sizeable enough to tempt bigger acts to the city. It's the first time Roxy Music have visited since a gig at the University back in the heady days of 1972. I was 13 and I missed it, something I was determined not to do this time around. Having bought a programme and mooched around the bar with my wife, peering about to see if anyone there had anything about them that screamed "Avalonia" (they didn't, least of all me!), we wandered down into the auditorium. Our seats were about 8 rows back, stage left. The support act was Rose Lee Dayton (sp?) and that's all I have to say on the matter. I was in a state of anticipatory tension and they floated by without making an impression. Lighting technicians scaled ladders, swinging perilously over our heads and St. Germain played over the PA as some sections of the hall became impatient. Eventually, the lights dimmed and South Downs wafted over us, followed by that familiar sound of people at a party, underpinned by the almost subliminal thump-thump-thump of the bass and bass drum of the song we're about to hear. And then, that keyboard riff, the curtains speed open, Phil, Andy and Sarah move into position and Paul's drums herald sonic assault! "I tried but I could not find a way" Where's Bryan? And then I spot him to the rear of the stage, sitting at the electric piano. Possibly the best stage entrance he's ever made - by not even making one. Now that IS cool! And all those doubts that persisted in me, even after TOTP2, about the band's motivation for touring, no new material, about whether it was a good idea to go back, whether anyone or anything could really live up to the emotional energy and sheer time I've invested in them through the years You know, those doubts. They just disappeared! "Re-Make Re-Model" inhabits the sonic area of 1972 - it sounds familiar, fresh and contemporary and way ahead of its' time simultaneously. A wonderful video projection of Roxy images on the screen behind the band towards the climax of the song serves to put the evening into context. And then Bryan says "We're Roxy Music." And he's right - they are! Is this the finest incarnation of Roxy Music ever? You decide! I tried (but, lamely, I could not find a way) to write in more detail about the concert. I can only say that it will remain in my head for as long as my memory persists. The only deviation from the initial set list was the inclusion of "In Every Dream Home A Heartache", between "Oh Yeah" and "Tara" at the expense of "Avalon", but you know that already. If I had to choose a favourite it would be "Mother of Pearl", though "More Than This" (which finally brought people to their feet) ran it close, which is perhaps strange for a 1,2,3,4 (5) like me. I think I remember Bryan introducing Lucy Wilkins as "a Nottingham lass". Am I right? It's a little sad that, despite the best efforts of some of us towards the front of the hall, we couldn't convince everybody to join in with the Roxy Roxy chant. And suddenly, it was over. For Your Pleasure was such a breath-taking way to end the show as, one by one, they left It could almost have been written with such a valedictory effect in mind. Clean and final, there's no coming back for more after that. And as people filed out to the haunting strains of "1/1" from Eno's "Music for Airports", I hung back, tired and wrung out, reluctant to accept that this was probably the last time I'd see Roxy Music live. Sometimes, going back is the only thing to do. I still want both "Avalon" and "In Every Dream Home A Heartache" (wonder why I want to type AN Heartache?), but alas if there is something to be asked, more than this true to life re-make re-model of Roxy, it's a chance meeting like Diane Whateley's while my heart is still beating, preferably in Stockholm and not India. Now she gets to see the band at Wembley (Friday). It's totally self-induced, no pressure from Dad at all. Honest. She also likes ABC but worryingly has started listening to S Club and Steps also... And I'm hoping it gets pulled altogether for, say, Prairie Rose or Amazona. So there . But seriously, this weekend's stand (and next's 3-nighter) will hopefully prove interesting in that we might see just where the sets will be shaken up a bit. 46 shows to go, 19 allegedly rehearsed songs yet to be heard. Random speculation: One of Avalon and Jealous Guy will always be included (a pity, that). Their slots are the two most likely to be rotated. I suspect ITIS will also go on leave. Oh Yeah a likely candidate as well, with Casanova (which will surely make an appearance) an odds-on here to fill in. And is FYP, as dramatic as its slot may be, *really* going to hold up as an appropriate closer for multi-night stands? It sums up the feelings of apprehension I've had "on and off" since the tour was announced - although the doubts, such as they were, have been outweighed from the outset by excitement at the prospect of seeing Roxy again (STILL can't believe I'm saying that!). I was nervous as we waited anxiously at the TOTP2 (fears totally unfounded on the night) and had butterflies in my stomach last Saturday ahead of Dublin (and I wasn't even there!!). All reviews I've read - and perhaps most tellingly those totally (ahem!) unbiased reviews in the press - are very positive. So, less than 24 hours to Birmingham - my first gig of the tour - and I can't wait. And a special thanks to you personally for your work in compiling the list of who's attending where! Best wishes to all - hope to see some of you on Saturday evening and at Wembley next Friday and Sunday. Well, I was almost desperately searching the web to get the tickets for Santiago gig, and I found nothing. This evening, after an exam, I went to the biggest record stores, but they had no tickets :( Finally, I could manage to get the new compilation, which I'm happyly listening to right now. Of course, I've told everyone WOWW! We're all flying up to Santi-aaago!!, and an (older) friend of mine said, "oh, I saw them in 83". Naturally, my esteem for him has increased. Well, apart from not having gotten any news on how to get the tickets (there are no updates on roxymusic.co.uk), I have a serious trouble, which is as follows: As I was searching the net for knowing where tickets are being sold, or to get them online, I found a "special offer": FLY NOW TO SEE ROXY IN WEMBLEY 23 JUNE!! I don't need to say how much I'd like to join that gig, in such a splendid arena... the offer is economically not too bad (300 pounds); it's bed+breakfast in a horrible hotel (I didn't know there were only * star rated hotels). Well, the thing is supposed to be for two people, and I don't think my guardian angel can be considered as "people". The doubt is: should I go? More, should I go considering this things: a) I would go to bankrupcy -almost-, though I would get a good amount of money some people owe me later on. b) My family would think I've gone crazy. This is, in fact, a problem. I use to be a quiet young man. In fact, I could go without saying anything, but I don't think it's honest, it's a childlish thing. c) Of course, I would not only go to Wembley, I'd go to Santiago as well, which makes my bankrupcy -how did I manage to get till here? ok, no problem, money comes and goes, I'll soon have a good amount, hopefully-, sorry, I was saying, it makes my bankrupcy even worse. On the other hand, I would like to spend a day in London and take a walk thru Oxford Street and buying Penhaligon's blenheim bouquet, etc. (no more talking about bankrupcy, that's a need). Well, I don't like to bother other happy people with my inner problems, sorry about that. I also know, that even if you give me advice, the decision is mine. Maybe I just needed to shout it aloud.
