I almost shouted -well, in fact, I did-; I already didn't expect they were coming to this corner of Europe... Well, I can't believe it. Maybe it's hard for you to understand how happy I am, all of you who have attended Roxy or Ferry gigs since 1972-3, but at that point I was exactly -7 years old. It's like a great pourboire. Santiago is a small city in the west-north of Spain; it is known because in the middle age it was a incredibly important center of pilgrimage; nowadays there are still lots of people who pilgrim there every year -mostly not because of religious feelings. Its cathedral is truly superb; its main door is one of the finest jewels of Romanic Style, and the fachade is baroque. I know the Stones and other bands have performed there -I still wonder why, because it isn't a big city; I think it's because of the taxes, etc. Santiago has also a very important attraction because of the food: its seafood is reputed to be one of the finest in the world (lobsters, etc), and I'm not saying that because I'm spanish, I don't mind about cooking at all, but maybe this could bring here some avalonians :), which I hope to meet. I don't know where they're going to play... and I don't know if there will be many people who will attend the show (hopefully yes, it's one of those legendary bands, etc, has well known songs...). John's website has been worked on for almost 2 years and under construction on line for 6 months. It's getting closer to completion everyday. He aimed to get it up and running before the Roxy tour, but as the weeks went by it was becoming more and more unlikely. With a massive amount of work being done by us both during the last four weeks it still wasn't enough, so we discussed the option of opening up a few pages just to get reviews of the shows up and running. The final decision to do this wasn't made until an hour before we left for Dublin, and I made a hasty posting to Avalon for him saying there should be a review to read before 1am right after the show. By 4pm Friday afternoon, the car is packed with, 1 J.O'B, 2 kids, 3 CD's of Roxy compilations, 4 bags and my PC, (not a partridge in a pear tree, we left that behind as there was no room left) ready for the journey to Dublin. The drive to Stranraer was a mere 270 miles, but the travel pills worked and we arrived without mishap. Having decided not to take the midnight ferry to Belfast, we had a goodnight's rest before the 6.30am morning ferry. Everything was on schedule (no one was sea sick) and we were driving around Belfast at 10am, and this is when the best plans went astray. Somehow, we didn't realise the M1 was a ring road around Belfast, so we ended up driving west for 60 miles west instead of in the southerly direction needed to reach Dublin. It wasn't until we could see the Statue Of Liberty in the horizon that we realised we were on the wrong road. But all was not lost, the concert was still a few hours away, and barring any more navigational mistakes, we should still make it in time. We arrived at the hotel without any more errors and said goodbye to the car, whisked to a car park, where it seems all foreign cars must be taken. To get the priorities in the right order I set up the PC in order to be ready for getting that first concert review up on the web. But, the phone cable had the wrong socket endb&b&so this meant a scramble through the shops to find an adaptor. We tried this shop and that one, and each time sent in a different direction by the helpful assistants. I feel we got to know quite a bit of Dublin having walked around and around for 3 hours! On our quest, we bumped into Therese and Raymond, and caught the tail end of the TOTP2 broadcast in a TV department of a store. With no more driving to do, I wanted a taste of the black stuff, but we didn't have time, so I ended up with a can of coke instead. We managed to get all the necessary equipment, and got back to the hotel room at 6 pm, but, the computer wouldn't switch on. The fuses in our room had blown. Time was running out and we had to get ready for the show. J.O'B anxiously called the reception, his cool was lost (not a pretty sight). 10/15 minutes went by and at last assistance came, and power was restored. Hooray! But, the modem still wouldn't connect. It looks like the PC took up the space in the car for nothing. John gives up in disgust. But after a bit more perseverance and logic, we had all systems go, with 10 minutes to call a taxi to get to The Point. After the show, I left John to write the review while getting 2 sleepy wee heads into bed. They had had a great time. (see earlier post) John and I then went through all the photos taken to choose the best one to be the first on view. By now we were only a few clicks away from a successful mission. Mission was accomplished at 12: 28am. A review and photo were ready to read on the web. The wonders of technology never fail to amaze me. It was a great feeling knowing that everything worked. Within minutes we had an e-mail back from Simon G commenting on the review. Next on our tour was Glasgow. Standing in the mall at SECC John was talking to his friend Iris and her husband who we meet at shows. As they chatted, a mutual friend of theirs came across and said his hellos to both of them as he pulled out from his pocket something for Iris. (not what you think!) He told Iris "look what I found for you on the net last night" as he held the picture from Dublin from vivaroxymusic.com. An amazing thing this internet lark. The Glasgow review took a lot longer, and I don't really know why except I suppose tiredness of the tour was setting in. The pictures from this show are very special, as they were almost lost to an overzealous Glaswegian security woman. They were saved for us all by John's sleight of hand, and my extra large trousers! (Does my bum look big in this? Yes) My tour is now temporarily over, I drove almost 1000 miles to see the 2 shows, and had very few hours of sleep, but it was very well worth it. It has made me realise what stamina it must take to tour for 4 months! Ems PS. How many miles is it from Inverness to Paris?? ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 18:00:38 +0100 From: "Nigel Hollis" Subject: [AVALON] UK tickets Hello fellow "Roxyites" Having purchased my tickets on line through "Ticketzone UK". One of the only things which to my mind did not really work was the 2 conflicting solos by Bryan on harmonica and Chris Spedding on slide guitar during the middle of 'both ends burning'. Another bloody breakfast ! We all seem to be existing on them now. We set off and said goodbye to the Causeway about 10am. This is when the panic really started to set in - and the others had a fine time ribbing me all about it, too. The thing was - there was just ONE Ferry we could catch - and if it was cancelled, or we missed it, or something - then we would have missed the Glasgow Gig. Now, call me paranoid if you will, but I really didn't like those odds. I'd already worked out how long it would take to get to Belfast if the worst happened, so a quick flight could possibly be caught, as a last minute alternative. Failing that, I looked on the map for little airstrips in case we had to bribe someone with a little private plane to get us over there. No, really. I needn't have worried, all was well. But I didn't like leaving it all to just one chance... Driving through the countryside towards Larne, the cows in the fields made their feelings to us known once again, lifting their tails as if in symmetry, at the exact moment we passed by. What's that all about ? Was it our singing ? On to the high speed Ferry we go, an hour to Scotland. Now, here's the thing. I'm tired of hearing how Scottish people who move away from home have, allegedly, some sort of 'over the top distant loyalty' about their country (according to people who've never moved away). But, I tell you, there is something special about going 'home'. It's something that only those who have been away for a while, would be able to understand. I stood alone on deck, watching Scotland come into view, grinning like an idiot. It was really important to me. I know some people wouldn't understand that, but it was special to me. The swirling pipes were calling, as they say. I know it's a ridiculous cliche, but I don't bloody care. I was standing there, in a world of my own. Strange feeling, but one I won't forget. Ok, enough homecoming chest-beating, let's get on. As we hurtled (ok, crawled) towards Glasgow on the little country roads, the anticipation once again started to build. Various sights were pointed out and marvelled at - the massive Ailsa Craig, rising out of the sea, and perhaps more importantly, the 'Roxy Bar Cafe' which we passed, going through Girvan. Marvellous. Our now infamous chorus of attempting to sing along to the tapes were once again in full swing, too. Hey, we know how to keep ourselves entertained. Arriving in Glasgow, the omens continued to look good, as our Hotel was just a couple of hundred yards away from a little street, named 'Virginia Place'. I kid you not. There was 5 of us booked into 'The Penthouse' don't ya know - though I must admit that the pics of it on the Net, when we booked, were clearly taken just when it had been decorated. It had become rather shabbier ! However, a host of bedrooms, a couple of lounges, 3 bathrooms, and a sauna, and even our own Beer cooler (empty, but not for long) were included. Penthouse Perfection ? Almost. A quick walk around town to see what cash machines could be tricked into delivering the goods, and then off to the SECC. My god, what a night. No, I'm not biased. I love the Glasgow Roxy audience. And Roxy love them too, that was clear. Andy Mackay must have felt he was coming home, too, the reception he always gets. And everywhere Roxy go now, Thommo is treated like a long lost friend. Brill. Oh, and the Dancing girls... You've all heard about the Gig itself, it was stunning - - made even more entertaining by Bryan making the odd mistake here and there ! Being stuck about 15 feet from the Mic instead of getting on with the next verse during 'Editions' made for much hilarity down the front. Wry smiles from the rest of the Band too. A wonderful evening, which had only just begun. I do feel sorry though for many folks who occasionally get stuck in seats at the sides, or near the back of, these cavernous, soul-less venues. It does nothing for the sound. Only down the front does all seem well. Later, a pack of us in our Hotel Bar, putting the world to rights, over much Jack Daniels, Beer, and Coffees to finish (essential !). It must have been about 05.00 by the time we wound it all up, and various Avalonians drifted (staggered) off in different directions. Thing is - I don't know how I'd react now, to going to a Gig, then going home, like everyone else does. I guess we've been 'spoiled' in a way - but the meeting up, chatting etc before and after are now just as important as the Gig itself. It's not 'going to a Gig' anymore. It's a whole event, and long may it continue. Newcastle beckons... (to be damn well continued again... sorry !) Reecey... When I finally made my way to the departure gate, I saw Bill McCormick reading his paper. I thought very little of it until I paid a bit more attention to those sitting behind him and around and about...the whole band was there, waiting to get on the same flight!! I could not believe it. Bryan was in close conversation with Colin Good (who btw looks very much younger, close up!). They were holding papers and Bryan appeared to be making notes. I just knew that it would have been intrusive in the extreme, to go over and initiate a conversation, especially as I'd accompanied Jim to the airport. Jim left me to go and talk business with Bryan. Talk about frustrating.... however, I kept on reminding myself that I'm a grown up person and all this deferred gratification (!!) must be character building or something! At last it was time to board and Bryan ensured that he was almost last. I went up the stairs with TGPT and we discussed the poor sound on the TV version of TOTP2 compared to how it was on the night. There was quite a drunken melee on the 'plane as the remnants of stag and hen parties were going home- not the best adevrt for Glasgow; and of course some of the rabbel had clocked Bryan as most of them boarded very much later than all of us. Eventually we got to Glasgow where, inevitably the luggage took 30 mins to arrive; Bryan slumped over his trolley reading a paper, trying to look inconspicous, poor guy, and everyone else looking at him and his entourage.Chris Spedding was pleased to be complimented on his Dublin performance as we waited, but I felt did not really want to be engaged in conversation. And now home for a rest; a respite before more of the storm....all this party time wasting is too much fun....to be continued....possibly. .... Best moments for me were" Both Ends Burning" with the 60's style "Shindig" dancers If there... with an almost "hoedown" feel & that finale, when people said "For Your Pleasure" closes with everyone walking off one by one I couldn't see how it worked, but know I do , it was inspiring with Thompson (again?) getting the biggest applause. Birmingham next for my birthday show...Ta-ra......Ta-ra....... If you are longing for the low quality tracks that made up the most of Avalon then believe me this tour just ain't for you. Everything that was a let down about the 82 - 83 Roxy tour has been put right with this band. The only let down is the non-singer Miss Brown. If Avalon has been dropped for dream home it will enhance the set and leave her with even less of a part to play in things. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #225 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
