(1) There I was, scrambling to collect my luggage from the Glasgow flight, when I realised I was in Dublin, about to embark on leg 1 of my own mini world tour! I sauntered past the London Gatwick carousel, indulging in a little Roxy reverie, when who should I spot, but Bill McCormick. I thought that I really should compliment him on his work on the PM site, as it stands head and shoulders above most of the other official outlets. Anyhow the moment seemed to pass and I made my way to the airport bus. Whilst waiting, Bill M approached and I collared him; at first he was a little taken aback until I said my piece, identified myself and a discussion ensued on the merits and demerits of TOTP2. His parting words were, 'no doubt see you at the concert, tomorrow night'- who (tomorrow never!) knows?!! As I continued on my odyessy, trying to find my hotel and wondering what surprises the tour would bring, I found myself being drwn to the HMV shop. As I crossed the threshhold, 'Street Life'was playing and my gaze rested on a major display of 'The best of RM'! Being somewhat pre-occupied with my own tour plans, I had not got around to ordering it on-line. And there it was, on sale 3 days before the UK....for a fleeting moment I wondered if this was to tie in with the following day's concert; a shrewd commercial decision or mere coincidence?...Whatever, I now had the CD in my possession and I didn't care!! The next day (gig day)was spent, recovering from the night before- celebrations were in order as it'd been Ivor's birthday. After a day enjoying the sights and sounds of Dublin and taking in the historical ambience, it was time, once more to meet up with the Avalonians. Inside the foyer, a seething mass of people, seeking out drinks, both soft and hard, and also, of course purchasing souvenirs. I did like the programme (reasonably priced a IR#8)- a synopsis of all the albums and TGPT did get a page to himself; it's not all bad! Onward and upward.... I bumped into Jim Lawn, who was in excellent form, who told me that the mood backstage was really good. And dare I say it they were all having 'fun'!! Bryan had suggested changing the set at the pre-gig dinner...but hey, it was a joke!! Now, cutting to the chase, sitting 8 rows back, I'd have loved to have been closer, especially as the bouncers would not let us even stand up. However, the show began...not (as you all know by now) with a long lingering intro' and our man sauntering into the spotlight, effortlessly demonsrating his serpentine sleekness(!)in the way that only he can. But..with Bryan sitting stage -left at the piano belting out the opening chords to Remake/Remodel!! Everyone was stunned!! I had initially scanned the stage frantically, looking for him as there was an obvious gap stage front!! Needless to say, the crowd went wild. The band looked relaxed and it seemed to be an effortless performance, by all of them. Even Andy Mackay, who I thought had looked a little unwell at the Riverside, looked comfortable and at ease. With TGPT back on board, my teenage attraction to Roxy was again vindicated, the years melted away and I was 14 again!! What a difference that man makes to the sound..incredible!! Well, those are absolutely fine and groovy images, don't get me wrong. I mean, it's great that you're getting such quality, close shots. I notice from the images that apparently someone who might be the gorgeous Julia Thornton is up on stage with them. We can also see that Sarah Brown, about whom we've all been curious, might apparently be quite a stunner as well. Unfortunately, your very good camera only seems to be taking very good pictures of those three old codgers up front. Sunday 10th June, 2001. Not easy to get up in time for breakfast at the Hotel (this became a regular occurence) but just made it in time, to face the frosty staff, and partake of yet another none-too-healthy offering. It was brill, as soon as any of us had, say, finished our orange juice, the glass was swiped away so quickly, that you probably heard the sonic boom over here. I loved it. I went to reception to pay the bill with my bursting at the seams credit card, and made it a personal ambition to try to engage the receptionist (the one with the eyes, see part 1 for pathetic information) in polite conversation. After a full 3 days, she smiled, a major, major breakthrough. Therefore, I was happy. So anyway, there was this Englishman, Irishman, Scotsman, and Geordie girl in this car... And then we were 4. Our 'day off', as it were. The long drive up to the tip of Northern Ireland was ahead of us, for a night at the Giants Causeway. It really was an adventure. Roxy weren't the only ones on tour, we all were too. Myself, Ivor the Chaffeur, Jocelyn, and Chris T. set off sometime around midday. We stopped about halfway, at a lovely little village called Hillsborough, at a little local pub, for Lunch. Great. Lots of Scampi, Chips & foliage later, our recharged bunch set off in good voice, singing along at the tops of our voices to the various Roxy tracks booming from the Car. New backing singers for Roxy ? I think not - but we did come up with some sensational alternative lyrics for Psalm. Lots of musical differences within the car, important things to discuss, don't you know. The merits of 'Sylvia's Mother', for a start. We reckoned it was a great song, by 3 votes to 1, with Ivor being the only dissenting voice. Ivor had though, to his credit, the piece de resistance on standby, his tribute to Chris Spedding no less, as 'The Wombling Song' blared out along the highways and byways of Northern Ireland. The locals must have thought we were nuts. Chris T was less than happy that the car we were in was a 'Focus', reminding him of the type of music loathed by the pub rock cognoscenti. Right on cue, that very Band appeared on the cassette in the car, which promptly invited the comment 'This Is B*****ks' from the back of the car. We also decided at this point that we needed some Abba songs to sing along to. This will be rectified for the Birmingham Gig (yes yes, I know, we are in need of treatment, and fast !) The rest of the journey was spent wondering why cows were up to all sorts of things in fields - always at the exact moment we were passing by. This was a strange phenomenon which was later to carry right through into our Scottish soiree. Around 5.30, we were at the Giants Causeway, a stunningly beautiful place. We took the opportunity to go down to the amazing rock formations it is so, so famous for. This was our moment. Cast your minds back, if you will, almost a year, to the infamous Avalonia reworking of the 'Country Life' Album Cover, in a field, in Sussex. Well, I'm happy to inform you that 3 shots of our very own alternative 'Siren' Cover have now been done. Watch this space for details - or perhaps, don't. Lots of tourist confectionery later, Honeycomb, Yellowman etc, and a dinner which even the Giant himself could never have finished, and we really were fit for nothing. We were all a rather sorry sight, 'knackered' being the operative word. Time for a couple of drinks, and a reasonably early retirement that night, in preparation for our journey from Ireland to Scotland the following afternoon. My hometown Gig was approaching fast... My offspring ages 6 and 8 came along to Dublin and Glasgow with J.O'B and myself. They cut their teeth last year at Petworth and Castle Howard, and insisted on going again. Neither were put off by the long distances in the car (about 1000 miles in all) or the ferry...to see Ferry. They had had a great time. In Dublin the security moved us into empty seats in the front row, (from the 5th) albeit next to an amorous drunk, and dare I say it, we couldn't see the rear of the stage at all. When we all went up to the front to dance, we made it very close to centre stage and the kids stood on one of security's chairs which was then unfortunately removed. The gallant Martino lept to the rescue with an offer to lift Dominic on his shoulders. But, his back/neck was spared as the kids were lifted over the railings by the kind security-men, so they got the very best view. Bravo to Dublin. With two shows under their belts from last year, they were ready for these and were singing and dancing just like all the oldies behind them. Seeing the youngest with his left arm pointing skyward to the word, "Strand", made me realise that it was certainly all worth it. Due to the recent debates surrounding reviews which are of an Avalonian 'Hello' magazine nature or a factual a/c of which songs were done and so on, I once again issue my warning that my review is more of the former. I can do no more than that. So tune out now if graphic images and language used may disturb some readers...... Ok. YOu lot still here? Good then I'll begin. This is the Glasgow instalment of my reviews which I promised two days ago but have been too harassed to manage. I'm a Glasgow girl and so the home concert was always going to be a real biggie for me. I'd heard the legends from older siblings, the anecdotes from fellow subscribers, the press and the bootlegs but could it happen to me? We all met in the bar of the Moathouse hotel pre-gig. (A special hello to Gardner and sorry I missed you later, thanks also to your pal Micahel who kindly bought me a badge. Mail me offlist.) I saw people arriving in limos, girls with evening dresses on, boys in kilts and dinner suits and thought - 'some of this crowd are taking the dressing up bit a little seriously'. They were not SECC bound however, but rather attendees at a school prom dancein the hotel. Some of the Avalonians had to be dragged away from attending that event instead. Couldn't see what the attraction was myself. My days of looking like a teacher at a school disco are over. Again, JO'B's review provides a comprehensive account of the setlist and so on but to me among my most notable memories of the night was the behaviour of the crowd. Scots are reserved people and Glaswegians in particular can often be so cynical that they wouldn't bat an eyelid if they were served a pint by the Queen. However, once the genie of enthusiasm is released from the bottle, it's like trying to stop a tidal wave with a bucket. And with Roxy, that's a different thing altogether. They were on their feet promptly and were singing away fairly happily, enthusiastically albeit occasionally tunelessly. In particular there were four guys in front of me who were a) definitely straight b) singing love songs to each other c) doing actions to go along with them. They were fantastic to watch. They seemed to be big Siren/ CL era fans but their rendition of ITIS was a joy to watch. They had a ringleader who kept them all posted from the sounding of the first note as to which song was being done. d) they were all middle aged men e) in their heads they were 16. Fatastic. Security was extremely tight at the gig and there was to be no moving around it seemed. That was until the cool ruler issued his beckoning call and 3000 Scots bolted to the front in 4 seconds. I reckon that the rejuvenation of the Scottish football team could be remarkable if staffed by Avalonians with Bryan Ferry as team coach. As I crashed into the front I could feel my ponytail (bien sur) being tugged from behind. This had to be a someone with a deathwish. Almost. JFROXY who had spotted me moving past him at breakneck speed in 'Black Beauty' type fashion. Sorry I didn't see you later John, you looked v. dapper in your suit. The crowd down the front were, ahem, enthusiastic. Glaswegians can be,ehm, ehm, ehm, ebullient when they really like someone. They kind of look the same when they don't like people and as you can imagine it's important to get it right. The really talented fans next to me were managing to multi-task by swearing undying love to Ferry at the same time as suggesting forcefully to the stewards that they might like to get out of the way. I tried to keep my eyes to the front and not look in any way critical. Collateral damage is not my thing. The band seemed to be enjoying the event and MacKay in particular proved to be a big favourite. Maybe there's something in the name. With a moniker namechecking the patron saint and a clan he probably felt pretty safe. And then it was over. Everyone milling around. Graham Fairlie dashing to the front to bond with other Avalonians, casting off his cloak of lurkerhood with abandon. Others enthusing 'What about SFE?' 'MacKay was great' etc. you know or will know how it is. Nothing will prepare you for the gig if you haven't seen them yet. The getting ready to go out bit, hair checking, clothes ironing, 40 outfits later decisions, checking the front door, checking for tix, running back in having forgotten tix, sweating about traffic, wondering if the venue is still there. Then once there, the nervous anticpation, the merchandise purchasing, the spotting of Avalonians and people form other walks of your life you never knew were Roxy fans, the consumption of a steadying special lemonade. Then once inside, the curtains teasing you, then drawing back and finally you almost want to look away because you can't believe it and the opening notes sound and you keep looking.... AND THERE IT ALL IS. It's hard to capture the moment later of how good it really did feel. Just take it from me that it was great. And if you're very lucky, it'll happen to you too. Mmelle. Passing on the tradition is a worthwhile thing. My dad introduced me to RNB music as a kid, and I think my taste has not suffered because of it (and it may have something to do with my affection for RM, which I will certainly pass on). Nice story. You're right, of course. You see, all I was doing was just putting into words an idle daydream of a perfect set, based on the one currently being toured! If truth be known, I'd happily, and ecstatically go see Roxy 2001 performing covers of old Rubbettes' songs, and not One original number!! Yeah, I am a little blase about a couple of numbers, but it'srally not any kind of gripe, just a lazy cat amongst wingless pidgeons, in other words, nothing to get excited about, but I do undertand if folks see it differently. I've seen Ferry/Roxy quite a few times, I AM fortunate, and I certainly didn't want to ram my good fortune down others' throats! In the end, I know we'll ALL get the Roxy we want. "Amazona!!!" I'm not offended by any of these suggestions, and I'm all for changing the setlists around, as long as "Mother of Pearl" and "Song for Europe" stay in through Atlanta. :-) *But* I do want to remind Avalonians that not everyone seeing Roxy on this tour has been to a hundred or a dozen or even a handful of shows, and not everyone has a bootleg stockpile with dozens of performances of the "standard" Ferry encores. The views expressed here are most often those of the cognoscenti, who have the luxury of becoming bored with "Jealous Guy," "Love Is the Drug," "Avalon," and "Do the Strand." I've seen Ferry *once,* in Atlanta in '94. I was thrilled to hear all of those songs, and I think he did them (as well as that other much-decried encore chestnut, "Let's Stick Together") with passion where appropriate ("Jealous Guy," "Avalon") and flippant Ferry fun otherwise -- he seemed to be having as good a time with them as the audience was. There was no sign of ennui on Ferry's part, even though he was playing those numbers for the umpteenth time. I'll be ecstatic to hear those selections again at the Roxy show in Atlanta, should Ferry & company choose to play them. They make a rollicking conclusion to a great set. It would be one thing if Roxy Music were playing only radio hits. But they're not. The set as is includes the most important song of Ferry's career, "Mother of Pearl." It leads off with "Re-Make/Re-Model," as unsettling a blast of postmodern pop now as it was twenty-nine years ago. It has "Ladytron," "Out of the Blue," "A Song for Europe." For us U.S. audiences, even "Street Life" counts as a "fan" track rather than a crowd pleaser. It looks to me like Bryan & co. have put together a balanced set that gives a lot of pleasure to both the casual fan and the completist, and is constructed with a deep understanding of Roxy's importance and history. What's more, if they were doing "hits, hits, hits," they could have easily ended the set with "Do the Strand." The fact that they've given "For Your Pleasure" pride of place, leaving the audience not with the giddy sudden stop of "STRAND!" but adrift in the echoing mists of "tah-rah... tah-rah... tah-rah... tah-rah" says everything about what is right with this setlist, this tour, this band. I'll be the first to say when Ferry has come up short, and I don't think everything he does is glitter thrown from his jacket pocket or manna in a monogrammed flask. But the shows as described so far are scenes straight from my dreams. Other listmembers may be screening out "spoiler" messages; I'd rather send "setlist carping" to the kill file. later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 17:47:09 +0100 From: beauxb@cwctv.net Subject: RE:Re: [AVALON] Dressing Up I was lucky enough to have the patch, sewn high up on the left shoulder on a beige G.I. shirt from Army&Navy stores!
