It depends on your own eyes, it does not work on everybody. The lipstick light or dark red, depends on yourself as well. More white skinned than tanned, long blond, slightly voluminous coupe (hair that is). MMm, I have to think about this a bit more. And Roxy Music provided a perfect one last night at Newcastle's Telewest Arena. Time stood still in the blink of an eye as the opening strains of Remake Remodel took the hypnotised audience on a 30-year musical odyssey. The early experimental vibes of Ladytron, Editions of You and Out of the Blue provided the spine of an evening of sheer pleasure. And the stage show of the 10-piece Roxy band kept the eyes as well as the ears focussed. The beret capped streetwalkers of Street Life re-emerged later as peroxide blonde cheer leaders in Both Ends Burning and later as femme fatales for Mother of Pearl and tiller girls for the wonderful Love is the Drug. Manzanera's frock coat flowed like a flag against McKays smart zoot suit, while Ferry's silver, black and white tuxedos stole top honours in the stage clothes show. And the black and white close up screen provided the perfect backdrop. But it was the music that really scored. A Song for Europe was as beautiful and poignant as when Ferry first sang it to an entranced Manchester audience in 1973 and the magnum opus If There Is Something thrilled the packed arena. And the singles Virginia Plain, Jealous Guy and Avalon proved the band can still pop it with the best. As one concert T-shirt said: "I knew I would see you again". ******************************************************************** and the rest of the article: ******************************************************************** Thousands of fans packed into the Newcastle Arena to give Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry a homecoming to remember. Both the band and their adoring crowd may have been a little older and heavier than the last concert in 1981 but the result was just the same. More than 10,000 fans filled the Arena as Ferry, along with Jarrow-born drummer Paul Thompson helped make it a night to remember. At 55, lead singer Ferry still cuts a suave figure. The grey may be seeping through the dark locks and the facial lines grow more evident but he still has a stage swagger and those razor edge vocals hit the notes, right and otherwise. Ruth Tinsley, 26, of Hexham, said the band were everything she had expected. She said: " This is the first time I have seen them and they were incredible. I think the crowd were really excited to see Bryan Ferry back in the North East and he gave a special performance. I just hope they keep on touring. It would be a tragedy if this was the last time we saw them up here" James Jones, 47, of Heaton, said: " I have seen them once before but this was something else. Roxy Music was never a one man band. Andy McKay's sax playing was as perfect as ever, Phil Manzanera's lead guitar riff's blasted through the night air and Paul Thompson's drumming kepr the rhythm tight. As John Peel once said Roxy Music were "the only original act" to come out of the glam plagued 1970's". From Virginia Plain to Avalon the fans responded to Ferry's voice. Last night's gig on the Roxy world tour was particularly poignant for Washington-born Ferry, a former Chronicle delivery boy, and Jarrow lad Thompson. Rumours persist that the tour, which moves to America in July before further dates in Europe, could be worth millions to the group. But for Ferry and Thompson the stop-off in Newcastle signalled a sealing of their partnership which split after musical differences in 1980. But the 2001 audience were with it from the opening number and when the band finally bid farewell at the end of the third encore, For Your Pleasure, the loudest cheer rang out for Thompson. ******************************************************************* They show a picture of Bryan in his silver jacket and below a picture of him with Chris Spedding. Unfortunately they have mistaken Chris Spedding for Phil as the caption below the photograph reads : "...pictured with guitarist Phil Manzenera...". You would think our local reporters could get that right. Never mind - it was a good review. Part 1 : The Roxy Effect Thursday, 7th June, 2001. Oh God, it's 04.45 a.m, and I only got to bed at 03.30. Long day ahead. Made my way, bleary eyed, to Harpenden Stn, to meet up with Mr. Canning at 7am, for the drive to Holyhead, armed with enough luggage to sink the odd battleship or two, but hopefully not the Ferry itself. Very strange cargo. A host of tapes for the car too, recorded the previous day, including every single Roxy Album, all in chronological order, every track - except Cry Cry Cry. There are limits, even for Roxy fans, you know. Made it in good time to nip into the cafe at the port, for some alleged food, before the crossing taking us from Wales to Ireland. All cars were 'sprayed' on disembarking, re the foot & mouth crisis. I did attempt to explain that the coffee we had drunk in the port cafe would do the job much quicker, and could possibly wipe out every disease known to man (or cow) at a single stroke, but this fell on deaf ears. Maybe it's the accent. A further half hour to Dublin, with 20 mins on top to navigate the one way system, and we were at our Hotel. At this point Ivor seemed to don an Irish accent, (previously unheard.) Our car was mysteriously whisked away by hotel staff, to an unknown car park in an unknown location. We were checked in by a delightful receptionist, who had the sort of beautiful eyes that bore right through you into your brain. She didn't smile much, until 3 days later, though perhaps it was because I was leaving. I take the utmost care to describe her as 'delightful', knowing very well that any future post by Ivor may well contain a very different description. Step forward, Mr. Canning, and do your worst. Met up with Andrew, Patricia, Ed, Renate et all for a few drinks and excitable Roxy chat - what will Roxy play ? What will it be like ? The tension was building, to be sure. Friday, 8th June, 2001. Ivor's 40th Birthday. Much shopping during the day (ok then, looking for record shops actually) - and I'm proud to say my inbuilt invisible Vinyl magnet was working like a treat - 3 record/cd shops tracked down within the hour. The 'squad' (mentioned above) out in force again, shopping, eating, drinking, excitable. This was really what it was all about - I mean, the first Roxy gig in eons was one thing, but all of us meeting up to socialise and have a good time, in any town, any country, has become an essential part of the whole experience - we couldn't do without it now. The Avalon Squad was to meet later in an out of town restaurant, for birthday celebrations. Late afternoon, and I began to feel quite ill. Oh-oh. What the hell is this ? Dizziness, headache, bad stomach, fever - tragically imperfect timing or what ? Still, off we go to the restaurant, and a fine time was had by all. 15 of us in attendance, and I won't mention names, as I'm bound to forget someone. The plan was to go on from the restaurant to a few pubs to sample the fine Dublin hospitality, though by this time I felt decidedly dodgy, and had turned a strange shade of something approaching green. Back to the Hotel for me instead then, and I'll admit here and now I was very, very worried. So, I missed the party, unfortunately. The entire night, and next day too, I spent in the hotel, asleep most of the time, whilst everyone was in town. By mid afternoon - I was seriously having to consider the fact that the first Roxy Gig in about 18 years was just hours away - and I may not be in attendance - I really felt that bad. A little later, and we're all off to the Point. This is where the adrenalin starts to kick in. I started to feel better, though very, very nervous - I get that way at Roxy or Ferry Gigs - it's really important, you know ? By the time we'd all met up, and there we were, in our seats, it was as if the whole world had lifted off my shoulders. I'd suddenly never felt better. The Roxy Effect. Works every time. I'll never, ever, forget the beginning. Once Remake/Remodel kicked in, it was one long musical orgasm, as they say. You've all read the reviews, well, most of you anyway, so I'll spare you those details. The highlights for me though : Out Of The Blue (of course !) - though the cameramen closing in on Lucy could have done better to get out of the bloody way - as we couldn't see her solo properly ! Tara - simply stunning. Andy and Lucy. Real 'catch your breath' stuff, similar in effect to how 'The Only Face' was received on the previous Bry tour - hearstopping, wonderful. 'While My Heart Is Still Beating' - well, not usually one of my faves, but it was done so, so well, and so beautifully played. And - the most stunning of all - 'For Your Pleasure'. What a way to end the Gig. Please, don't miss this. Savour those moments, as you'll never, ever forget them. Afterwards, a late night, naturally. Everyones opinions bouncing back and forth in an excited chatter, way, way into the early hours, as we literally took over a little local pub. No sleep till Glasgow, it seems... (to be continued...)
