Just recovering from a mad few days following around the best boy band in the world. The setlist has been covered elsewhere and much better than I could ever manage, so I've got more of my personal moments from the last few days. This is really about what hanging around with 20 other nutters was like, so if you find it boring (you loser you) or too stressful or too close to home, delete now. This is the Dublin review, Glasgow will be done later today. My posse included me, my bruv Raymond and my pal Vanessa from NYC. Both these people are now honorary Avalonians in a House Un-American Activities Committee way that people were deemed. Communists. A load of us met up for Friday in a lovely restaurant for Ivor's 40th and I' ll tell you that man has clearly been taking the same youth pills as Bry - he doesn't look a day over 39. Reecey was invalided out early via (IMO stress induced) illness. Our tour adjutant was Chris Turner's pal Richard who deserves a medal and a virtual round of applause for ferrying (sic) around a crew of Avalonians We moved on to a bar which was named after a perfume (Cafi Samsara) and, as Jocelyn said, it looked like we were starring on the set of Mamouna. We resisted the understandable desire to take our clothes off, put on fake tan and drag around some poor unfortunate in chains. Unfortunately our restraint was not replicated by other swingers in the pub. Nervous shock claims could come out of this episode. We moved on to another traditional Irish pub - the real deal, not as created by a UK chain I ran over to point out to other list members that the PA was playing LST, I tripped and grabbed hold of a poor woman on a bar stool round the waist. She let out yips louder than Jerry H. ever did and her boyfriend thought it was his lucky night and tried to push the pair of us into a taxi home. V. embarrassing. Moved on to another bar - by this stage there was only 5 of us (the rest are wimps) - my posse and Chris and St. Richard. Much toing and froing re trivia about BF/RM and more than one or two Ferry impersonations. In a moment of terrifying prescience (I didn't know what was on telly the following night) I said that Bryan Ferry could go on 'Stars in Their Eyes' and say 'Tonight Matthew I'm going to be an Avalonian'. Stotted (the Scots will know what that means) home while Sis. V. and I were made various unspeakable offers. I don't know why Vanessa insisted that we had to go home. The day itself was fairly calm apart from the wild phone call from a pal telling me how she had spotted me on TOTP2 (and no Niki H. I'm not a glamorous blonde, just a boring brunette (gentleman may not prefer me, but as the saying goes, they marry me)). Stress on an international level, that 's impressive. Got to the venue. By this stage we are beside ourselves with excitement and BTW there was no question of us being smug re non-attenders from Avalon. You were with us all in spirit, it must be what being a special representative from the UN is like but with the added perk that you don't have to be nice to Geri Halliwell. Lots of interesting if ill-advised outfits on other (i.e. mere mortal) fans. Special mention has to go to an Armani clad Jocelyn and Ed Stobelaar looking like the suave male model that used to advertise Paco Rabanne along with his glamour chick (and very blonde) wife. The gig came and went and was fab. A youthful, professional and buoyant performance. No towel though, I was hoping to get the whole set. If you want to know more about the gig, go to JO'B's site. It'll give you the holy grail. Afterwards, Avalonians met up, thrilled that the heroes had delivered the goods and beaming like proud parents at graduation. Went into a pub on the dock. This was interesting. It looked like it could be a) on the set of the (original) Get Carter b) that some of us may never see Sunday How wrong we were! They loved us although they weren't quite sure why. When a couple of female Avalonians went to the bar , you could have fitted eggs into the open mouths of some of the locals. Actually when some of the male Avalonians wnt to the bar you could have done the same. It's the lemon shirts, the tour shirts and the washed and brushed hair that does it every time. The next thing - 'Avalon' comes over the sound system. It was like the reverse of hearing the Clash's 'Sandinista' album in the tea room at Fortnum & Mason's. Cool. Then time for home. 20 happy (very happy, they had a lock-in in the bar and locals ended up discussing the merits of 'Stranded over 'Country Life') wee Avalonian bears headed to various houses and hotels. To sleep the sleep of the righteous. Keep the faith brothers and sisters. See you tonight for the Glasgow reprise. Mmelle. The Glasgow Review answered the two questions I had on Dublin, namely - where there any dancing girls (in the light of the TOTP2 extravaganza), and did they transpose "More than This", given Ferry's frequently repeated comment that it was too high for him to sing any more. I'm glad to know the answers are "yes" and "yes"! I'm intrigued by the use of FYP to close the show. Although it's not actually a particular favourite of mine, I agree it's a beautifully crafted song and it definitely has a place in the set. Personally I would prefer a more upbeat ending so I'm curious to see how it works (as John says in his review, no-one else could get away with it!). I'll reserve judgement until Saturday! I'd been pondering for ages what the opening number would be - after South Downs was played through the PA, I heard the distinct rattle of glasses and party conversation and then , wham, the curtains lifted and Roxy launched into Re-Make Re-Model - a band at full steam and as one. Where was Ferry? No long intro, no saunter onto the stage - ah , there he was to the left of the stage, behind a bank of synths. Dressed in a sparkling silver lounge jacket and his greying hair backlit from the lighting rig my first impresson was of the uncle from the original Munsters TV show (No, not Fester Addams) or of Elsa Lanchester from The Bride of Frankenstein. Quite startling. But what a fantastic opener, introducing the band 30 years on. This was MY Roxy. My Roxy of the BOB, Beauty Queen, Amazona, The Thrill of it All , She Sells, Whirlwind, Manifesto and so on. Those songs I'd grown up with and those, I believed , that belonged to me. Then "Oh Yeah" and the Glasgow crowd once again rises to its feet - its a large arena, SECC, and the they're going mad. I , and I think the band also , were taken aback by the response that "Oh Yeah" got. This was THEIR Roxy - the Roxy of Dance Away , Avalon, Jealous Guy. The crowd sang along to "Oh Yeah" like it was the biggest Roxy song ever. But hey, wait a minute here comes Ladytron, Out of the Blue, A Song for Europe, Street Life, Mother of Pearl , If There is Something. "Whats this song?", the guy sat next to me asked me a minute or so of ITIS. Listen and learn, I thought. This is MY Roxy. Avalon and Jealous Guy . Tick them off, they're not in the encore , I thought to myself. Tara, extended , silver necklaces hanging from the stage curtains, a starry night sky. Ah , the visuals, black and white CCTV of the band projected on the back stage, out of focus, brash, immediate, exciting . More Than This, water droplets on a still pond. A blue globe during OOTB, crimson red lighting during ASFE. A troope of glamourous dancers. Dancing lights, bright, direct , like the laser beam that searched Ripley's lifeboat at the start of "Aliens". And then, Editions of you and Virginia Plain and it was all over. A mad call for an encore , the band back on the stage for Love is the Drug and Do the Strand. Not just mine but, at that point, everyone's Roxy Music. And then finish. Do the Strand, always the last song. Its over. Ferry's stopped, look at the time he gesticulates to the crowd at the front. Time to go home, its late. And then, Thompson's intro to For Your Pleasure. The shiver that went down my spine at that point was real. The song was as much unexpected as a revelation. What a way to finish. This was for us, fellow Avalonians. Those who followed and understood. Its a big tour , a major event, a lot of media coverage will follow. Roxy and Ferry are undoubtedly fashionable again. Many think Ferry's done nothing for 15 years. A moneyspinning tour for sure , but more than that. Roxy Music were clearly enjoying themselves but they are also saying goodbye and thank you. Philip PS It seems the set is the same as at Dublin, but I'll be hoping for a few, promised, variations later on in the tour ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 13:11:32 +0100 From: "Laura Shadbolt" Subject: [AVALON] Dubline reviews Looks like I won't get to read the Dublin reviews until after 10pm tonight, if they're all on the web. I've already stressed to my sister (who is 15 and hasn't been to a "proper" gig yet) the importance at any other gig of wearing either trainers or Doc Martens and preferably trousers, etc, but in my opinion these Roxy gigs are the only exception: the only gig where dressing up is rather more important than being comfortable, at least for the ladies :-) I don't suppose the suits for the men make a vast amount of difference. And... wow! The sound and picture are great, sure (please please please let there be a NEW TOWN DVD someday), but the performance is even better! We didn't get to see any of the '99-'00 tour, nor do we have the Brussels vid that circulated here, so this was our first viewing of the show. It felt instantly familiar because of the show reviews and photos that you Avalonians so kindly provided over the last eighteen months. But not to get too "Where or When," it was still great to have those pictures fleshed out. We can only imagine how impressive the subsequent stops of the tour were, since Lucy Wilkins was absent from this show, and by all accounts the band got even tighter as the tour went along, but we were truly impressed by how great the performance and arrangements were. Colin Good did a magnificent job of translating Ferry's material to this format -- the dissonance on "Chance Meeting" preserved (and maybe *enhanced,* gadzooks!) in big band/orchestral format, who'd'a thunk it? Perhaps the biggest surprise for Melissa and me was how strong the ATGB material came across. Neither of us are fond of ATGB -- I think we may dislike it as strongly as Colleen and Gene do, and that sort of music isn't a style of which we're fond, no matter if it was inspirational fodder for Ferry's worldview. But if he'd sung those songs in the studio with the character and force he gives them live, we would have enjoyed ATGB a *whole* lot more. Maybe in the studio he was concerned with showing "respect" for the songs and feared overpowering them, or maybe his voice wasn't in great shape at that point in time; regardless, the studio versions are aural sominex to us. But live, doing the very same songs, he sounds like Bryan-by-God-Ferry, sacrificing not one whit of touch or style while fully inhabiting every syllable and note. So anyway, this is an unqualified rave from us. Our only quibble is with the decision not to release the full show on DVD, but what's there is magnificent. We'll be playing this one quite often! Oh, and while I've not seen more than still pictures of Lucy Wilkins (well, the "Virginia Plain" footage on Han's website too), so I'm still open to the possibility that I'll go ga-ga over her, I gotta say that I don't quite get the drool over Lucy and Julia when the endlessly attractive Rosie Wetters was sharing the same stage. Oh my, or perhaps more '30s-like, hubba hubba. later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 20:13:40 +0100 From: "Kevin Scollan" Subject: [AVALON] 2 Tickets for Wembley 23rd June I have two tickets for Wembley on the 23rd - block B2 row 1 - that unfortunately I cannot use (my wife refuses to go three nights in a row - is that grounds for divorce as unreasonable behaviour?) "Amazona!!!" I'm not offended by any of these suggestions, and I'm all for changing the setlists around, as long as "Mother of Pearl" and "Song for Europe" stay in through Atlanta. :-) *But* I do want to remind Avalonians that not everyone seeing Roxy on this tour has been to a hundred or a dozen or even a handful of shows, and not everyone has a bootleg stockpile with dozens of performances of the "standard" Ferry encores. The views expressed here are most often those of the cognoscenti, who have the luxury of becoming bored with "Jealous Guy," "Love Is the Drug," "Avalon," and "Do the Strand." I've seen Ferry *once,* in Atlanta in '94. I was thrilled to hear all of those songs, and I think he did them (as well as that other much-decried encore chestnut, "Let's Stick Together") with passion where appropriate ("Jealous Guy," "Avalon") and flippant Ferry fun otherwise -- he seemed to be having as good a time with them as the audience was. There was no sign of ennui on Ferry's part, even though he was playing those numbers for the umpteenth time. I'll be ecstatic to hear those selections again at the Roxy show in Atlanta, should Ferry & company choose to play them. They make a rollicking conclusion to a great set. It would be one thing if Roxy Music were playing only radio hits. But they're not. The set as is includes the most important song of Ferry's career, "Mother of Pearl." It leads off with "Re-Make/Re-Model," as unsettling a blast of postmodern pop now as it was twenty-nine years ago. It has "Ladytron," "Out of the Blue," "A Song for Europe." For us U.S. audiences, even "Street Life" counts as a "fan" track rather than a crowd pleaser. It looks to me like Bryan & co. have put together a balanced set that gives a lot of pleasure to both the casual fan and the completist, and is constructed with a deep understanding of Roxy's importance and history. What's more, if they were doing "hits, hits, hits," they could have easily ended the set with "Do the Strand." The fact that they've given "For Your Pleasure" pride of place, leaving the audience not with the giddy sudden stop of "STRAND!" but adrift in the echoing mists of "tah-rah... tah-rah... tah-rah... tah-rah" says everything about what is right with this setlist, this tour, this band. I'll be the first to say when Ferry has come up short, and I don't think everything he does is glitter thrown from his jacket pocket or manna in a monogrammed flask. But the shows as described so far are scenes straight from my dreams. Other listmembers may be screening out "spoiler" messages; I'd rather send "setlist carping" to the kill file. later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 22:20:01 +0200 From: "linn van vliet" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Dressing up Good for you, I am gonna wear black sort of seventies trousers (they are very classy and neat) with high heels, a small top (haven't decided which on) and a black cotton long coat over that. Hair loose, Jerry Hall make up, a very long white silk shawl carefully draped around my neck, going down to the back. Black gloves, maybe and a stunning perfume... well, got an idea vaguely, that's all.. It's impossible to please everyone and I agree that this set seems designed to appeal to as many people as possible. And that's how it should be. We've all paid our money and look forward to hearing our own special favourites. Some people didn't get into Roxy early on for the very good reason that they simply weren't around (or old enough) at the time. What is wrong with only having discovered Roxy in the late 70s/early 80s (and I speak as a fan since 1972!)? There is a lot of "snobbishness" on some other discussion sites (not, thankfully, on Avalon) which suggests that if you only like the stuff from F&B onwards then you're not a true fan. Well, a fan is a fan regardless of the extent of their knowledge. Everyone has their own preferences (my own favourites can be plucked from the whole period). A good concert should include "crowd-pleasers", standard hits and some slightly less well-known material to please those who are completely obsessed (ie most on this list!). From what I've seen so far - even if the set is tweaked as the tour progresses - Roxy seen to have got it right. I hope you enjoy the concert(s) that you're due to attend - I am counting the days until my first one on Saturday! While TOTP2 did renew my appreciation of LITD & DTS to some extent, I am content to think that I will be leaving the NEC with something other than these numbers ringing in my ears. Indeed the "tara...." exit sounds quite a "shiver down the spine" farewell! Who knows...considering the 20/40 figure being hinted at surely this exit may change by Saturday???? Regards Neil Jones.
