The outburst in question comes from a fascinating and very, very long feature called "Darkness Falls: Ferry in the Confessional" by Allan Jones in the Sept 16 1978 Melody Maker, which is just before TBSB flopped. And here are the paragraphs in question: ================ "I've realised for a long time that I've been disliked," he said darkly when I mention his man recent detractors, "but it's only lately that I've realised that I might actually be hated. It's an unpleasant situation, but one I think I can accomodate. If people hate me, fuck them. I don't need them. I'm sufficiently convinced of my own talent to be able to live without them. I'm as good as anyone else currently working in the field of rock music, and better than most, I think. If some people don't realise that, then they must be pretty fucking stupid, frankly. "There are so many utterly mediocre talents being acclaimed at the moment that I have no real fears for my reputation. I know how good I am. I'm the most severe critic of my work; no one is more critical of my work than I am myself. That's why I take little notice of the so-called critics, who are mostly ill-informed and illiterate idiots. I know how good I am, and as long as I have faith in myself, I'll continue. And, as far as I'm concerned at the moment, everybody else can just go and fuck themselves." ============================= It's a fascinating feature, and one which one day I hope to add to the articles on Always Unknowing. I've always balked because it's incredibly long -- four dense pages of teeny, tiny microscopic print. In fact, the third page couldn't be shrunk to 8x11 off the library microfilm and retain any legibility: I had to copy it onto two pages and tape them together and I still have to hold the damn thing four inches away from my face to read it. And my sight's pretty good, actually! But hey, if anybody out there has the original article and wants to do one of those OCR-scans, I'd be happy to post it on the page... Absolutely *nothing* wrong, and you have nothing at all to apologize for. The initial comment and the follow-ups were all offered in the spirit of good humor which has marked this list for years. Well, at least I thought it did. The guys are back and looking good. Songs have been carefully selected from all periods (except Manifesto) and were wonderfully performed. Some minor sound glitches, but I'm sure they'll be sorted out soon. I was surprised and delighted when the curtain opened, as 'Re-Make / Re-Model' started, to see the whole band together. No extended intro waiting for Bryan to appear. Roxy Music were back and not Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. Also nice to see Bryan at the piano for quite a few songs, instead of centre stage. Just like '72/ early '73. And his clothes took us through all Roxy's stages, from silver glitter to leather to pseudo white tux. Amazing to see Andy providing backing vocals once again. When did he last do that? And how he blew. And he looked great in his blue suit. And at one point he put his sax down and danced at the side of the stage. Not so sure about Phil's scarf. The greatest thrill was to see the guys having such a great time. And the audience also did a great job, especially when allowed down to the front to dance. Admittedly, we had an excellent vantage point - aisle seats two rows from the front which left us well placed when the charge to the front occurred - which I recall was when they reached More Than This. I'm sure that you will all endeavour to see the tour when it reaches you - its worth waiting for. Eagerly anticipating Birmingham. But I think we all need answers to the two REALLY important questions here. A) Did Phil wear the fly glasses, and 2) How was the lighting?
