Firstly thank you to those who have said "welcome back". I notice in the Mirror article "is this Bryan Ferrys' last Strand?" that he was asked whether this was just a pension booster. Understated as ever we get "I hope to make some money out of it". Oh yeah. He went on to say that he felt it would bring the Roxy songs to a wider audience - a good point and one he makes frequently. I wonder if any Ferry solo tracks will make the set list? Can't Let Go did on the Avalon tour - although it was a poor relation to the original recording. Re the opening song discussion I'd say the obvious choices are ReMake ReModel and Virginia Plain. Which makes them unlikley. Bryan has always delighted in being perverse. So what odds on DO THE STRAND opening the shows? There's no reason why it couldn't be the final encore as well. It's a thought you know. "There's a new sensation.................." If he said them - time will make him eat his words. Not exactly bursting with new & original ideas himself these days is he? He'll reform the Smiths someday to get a hit and some money. Bryan was always more than a student icon. 2) Further down that discussion board someone else posts to say the guy interviewed wasn't Bryan. The comments certainly don't sound like him at all. I've only seen one quote where he appeared to have lost it - the highly amusing - and true - "I'm as good as anyone else currently working in the field, and if some people don't realise that then they must be pretty f***ing stupid." A rant about illiterate and informed idiots (critics) followed and it ended "and as far as I'm concerned at the moment everyone else can just go and F*** themselves". If anyone has the full text of this outburst (after TBSB flopped) I'd love to read it again. But given he's only ever really said Jerry Hall was "addicted to publicity" and that the the band members had "normal human differences" and "got on each others nerves quite a bit" during the Avalon tour why would he start banging on about two people (Robert Smith the other) who are very much more has beens already than he is now? OK, I know I've got every track at least twice somewhere else, but I must say it makes a great compilation (I would say the best yet). Good to listen to whilst driving (slightly embarrassing moment as I was singing along to Mother of Pearl in a queue of traffic and suddenly remembered I had the sun-roof open and window wound down - it explained the somewhat perplexed looks coming from the people in the car alongside me, not to mention passing pedestrians). I actually preferred playing the CD on "random" mix, rather than what appears to be reverse chronological order on the CD, but it's a good selection and I hope it does well commercially (does anyone know if there is much of a promotion campaign on this?). And a nice touch - dedication in the sleeve notes "In memoriam Dr Simon Puxley". Looking forward to the Dublin reviews. We've been lucky that Ferry has been around touring solo for the last 18 months etc but what I would have given for a night like this in the lean years ...88-93 or 94-99? For example...friends know how much I like Ferry/ Roxy and lately its like "Hey Bryan (That's Me!) Roxy are in the paper again" and I'm not bothered..Ill see it again or I've seen that elsewhere...........now three years ago I'd jump on the paper to see the article. I remember being told Bryan was on the BBC comic relief in early 1999 and was sooo pissed off when I missed it. Now things are different. I didn't keep a set list or anything....loads of posts will tell you that but what a class performance. Everything from the dress sense to the set was slick and well produced. A better show one couldn't have asked for. from my view point I could see cameras everywhere...a video/dvd definitely going to come of this or a compilation of gigs! Every song was well rehearsed and sounded great...it was a big sound...a stadium sound....not at all over the top but you catch my drift...an exciting sound! Let me be the first to say that I think the star of the night was Lucy Wilkins....her interpretations of Eno/ Jobson were nothing short of spectacular. I know we saw her on ToTp but her keyboard/ electronic skills on Editions of you were to perfection vis a vis the original recording. BRAVO LUCY Out of the blue was another winner together with a beautiful Spedding solo on My Only Love. For your pleasure was a brilliant finish....and do The strand was second last this time!! My heart still beating was well done as were all of the avalon tracks with Andy shining on India. It really was beautiful with Lucy complimenting Andy on the violin. Avalon itself didn't work as well in my view. Sarah Brown performed greatly but you felt yourself egging her on to hit the "Whoo Hoo" high at the end of the track to no avail and therefore the climax of the song wasn't reached for me! all the old favs were done excellently from the 72-74 era. I won't go on as you'll read plenty of professional reviews but ill finish by saying that Roxy are back and really at their best....the cash is well earned. Eno is missing out but with lucy at the helm is not missed. regards Bryan ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 04:13:56 +0200 From: "Andy Mol" Subject: RE: [AVALON] DUBLIN THE REVIEW Thanks you all (especially John O'Brien), for the quick reviews! I can't wait till June 23th/24th! What a setlist!! To name a few of my favourits; Re-make/Re-model (off course the opening song, what else...), Ladytron (with Andy's oboe), If there is something (specially for you, Ed?), Out of the blue (come on Lucy), A song for Europe (Andy's sax solo "ad lib", I presume...), My only love, Both ends burning, More than this, Mother of Pearl, Editions of You, Virginia Plain, Do the Strand and last but definitely not least For your pleasure.... Holy cow, I'm surely a jealous guy over here in Holland. What a night it must have been for all who were there in Dublin. Still almost impossible to believe.... Roxy are back! And how!! Thanks for the reviews. I'm sure you did have a wonderful evening. All night I've been watching my clock, just imagining how it would be in Dublin... Great to here it was worth the waiting (after all, what is 18 years, considering the quality they brought...) See you in London, only two weeks from now..... Tara...
