I did the walk from tube station to home in a record 13 mins (usually 17 mins) and saw it from Dance Away onwards (vcr timer was set so watched begining after end...). I have the VCR fed into the hi-fi so I cranked it up LOUD!!! OOTB was bloody amazing, just as it was on the night, and no talking over it either - in full from TGPT intro to the last grizzly violin note (complete with slo-mo Lucy). OOTB also seemed to have the best audience shots in it, I managed to pinpoint a few foreheads including my own. The sound mix was a bit thin with Ferry and TGPT dominating, the guitars well back in the mix. That made it seem a bit flat, but having been there I know that it will sound better on the road. Call me a traitor if you will but it IS Bryan. As you watch the old performances you realise that his level of performance is much better than it used to be. I couldn't hear much of the "Roxy" sound - you 'd have been as well with the main man and Paul Thompson on their own given the mix with Phil and Andy almost inaudible. I hope the rest of the sound in the gigs carries the power of Ferry and Thompson. The band will do very well indeed to top the heights scaled by Ferrys last solo band which was truly exceptional. What's in a name eh? Roxy/Ferry ...........I'm in a minority I know but I just don't care. Phil reminds me of a cross between Michael Barrymore and John Virgo. The interview clips were quite revealing with the normally shy Ferry not keen to let the others say much! I didn't know Dance Away was planned for In Your Mind or BSB either. Just goes to show who writes the songs. Whilst looking forward to June 22nd at Wembley I am concerned about the future and what this tour means for it. As Time Goes By was Ferry's most interesting solo work since Boys and Girls and produced strong album sales and a universally acclaimed tour which lets not forget was only intended to cover a few dates. The success caused the tour to go on and on. This culminated in a completely rejuvenated maestro performing brilliantly a combination of Roxy and solo standards to sell out crowds in large outdoor venues. So if this Roxy tour is a springboard for Ferry and his unreleased work to become higher profile fine. But it smacks of "end of career" and that does worry me. Ferry still has more to offer music than touring with Roxy. I'm not saying he shouldn't do it but "Tick Tick Time" you know ? I've viewed it twice now, & apart from my "distinctive" hairstyle I couldn't help but notice how often the cameraman featured Jocelyn, my daughter asked if she was in the group ..."The cool one in the shades" & that's from a 16 year old! To be honest I thought Mackay sounded if he was struggling in places, but the interviews were good & I was pleased that their influence on the punk movement was acknowledged, I've always maintained that Virginia Plain was THE first punk single. Didn't Lucy look gorgeous? If anyone wants a copy of the show, mail me off list. I can imagine the divine Sara Brown doing the ooh ooh bits that Bryan does in the intro as Bryan waits in the wings to enter stage left or will it be right , oh no I am starting another debate. Ferry Andy and Manzo chatted really well and in good humour. The live songs Virginia Plain - very solid complete with audience participation at the end Love is The Drug - never one of my faves but it bounced into life this time around Out of The Blue - Brilliant - a different feel from other live versions with Jobbo. LW's solo spot on Jealous Guy - full version - not the abridged version from the Bradford thing - Andy and TGPT outstanding Do The Strand - perhaps the best vesion I've heard but then........... Overall - TGPT and Katz sound great together although the sound was a little thin. Pleased with Andy's perormance. The whole thing should sound overwhelming behind a PA system. To see that justified the whole programme!! Also, wasn't the sound unkind guitar-wise? Hardly heard Chris Spedding. Just goes to show how these things sounded better at the Riverside on the day! As I'm sure you know, I'm a Ferry fan first and foremost and his live performance has improved to unimaginable heights. And yes, Ferry and Thompson (and Lucy W) were the key performers on the night - hence the wonderful OOTB, but I actually thought the overall Roxy sound came across better "live" than it did on tonight's recording. That said, tonight's show was excellent. 45 minutes of pure nostalgia coupled with anticipation for the tour - a great mix of tracks (would have been even better had they included "Street Life", but "All I want is You" remains one of my all time faves and the BBC did include that - Therese, I'm sure you're with me here!). A real appetiser for the tour. > Phil reminds me of a cross between Michael Barrymore and John Virgo. Probably not a good idea to mention Barrymore at the moment......(but I see what you mean!!) > So if this Roxy tour is a springboard for Ferry and his unreleased work to > become higher profile fine. I really hope this is not "end of career". We keep hearing about the promised new album, and how Ferry's thoughts during the now notorious "plane drama" were that he still had work to do (was the so-called "crazed Kenyan" a frustrated Ferry fan taking drastic measures to expedite release of said new album??!). I welcome the Roxy tour - above all it should be great fun, and hopefully it will re-introduce Ferry's work to a new public. But yes, he still has much to offer - solo or otherwise - I hope he realises it, and that this tour will give him the kick up the proverbial that he seems to need!! Finally - to all of you about to start your tour - have fun, and see you at Birmingham and Wembley Cheers Jane ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #211 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
