Sorry. Dublin will follow in short order. If you are not interested in this mail, you can delet it right away. Any others who want to add suggetsions, please feel free to do so. trez GLASGOW GUIDE I hve (mainly) confined my list to the city centre eschewing the many delights in particular of the Southside and West End. If you are staying outwith the city, let me know and I'll give you a few hints offlist. I haven't included snack places here as nearly all the bars do food and the restaurants also have lunchtime menus which tend to be fairly reasonable. PUBS HORSESHOE BAR - Drury Lane(off Renfield Street) - a Glaswegian legend, this is a grand old Victorian bar. Travis rehearsed in the rooms upstairs, where you can also do karaoke, Keith Floyd praised the lunches (#1.75 for three courses) and it allegedly has the longest bar in Europe. Well worth a visit. THE TRON BAR - Corner of Chisholm Street with Argyll Street at the Glasgow X end. Well you've read the reviews of Glasgow nights out of Avalonians, this is your chance to experience it all first hand. A nice bar at the back of a theatre called (not surprisingly) the Tron Theatre. A nice bar with a pleasant menu, a nice place for lunch or indeed drinks with fellow Avalonians. GROUCHO AND SAINT JUDE'S - Bath Street - Supposedly affiliated to the Groucho club in London but fortunately without the membership requirement. This is fairly trendy and can be stocked up with 'meedja' types. Nice cocktails though. Downstairs so you have to keep your eyes peeled for the brass plate indicating its presence. THE ROGANO - Royal Exchange Square off Buchanan Street-If you get the chance to go into only one bar in Glasgow, make it this one or the Horseshoe. Don't be put off by the slightly forbidding front door, staff are extremely courteous and I don't think I've ever seen someone being turned away or treated shabbily. This is a Glasgow institution. It has been around since the mid-1930s, is entirely originally Art Deco in style and has a bar which is a replica of the one on the cruiseliner the Queen Mary (which was built in the Clyde shipyards). It has an EXTREMELY expensive restaurant on ground level and a much more reasonable cafi downstairs which is lovely for dinner or lunch. Alternatively, you can just drop in for a perfectly reasonably priced drink. Get a little taste of the life that Bry and the boys probably regularly enjoy. Maybe even star-spot a little. BABBITY BOWSTER'S - 16-18 Blackfriar's Street (I think, might be Lane) off High Street - Some name indeed. Again this place offers nice food and I think has guest ales. Got a great range of whiskies too! A bit of a legal/journalists' ghetto. At least with such company you won't be concerned as to how much you drink! THE CORINTHIAN - Ingram Street at corner with Glassford Street - Gloriously OTT dicor in a former court building (I worked in it when it was still a court, so it's a bit bizarre for me!). Where else can you sit around in faux georgian chairs and drink great cocktails. Feel like you should be wearing a 1980s Versace dress - even the men will feel like they should be wearing one. THE POLO LOUNGE - 84 Wilson Street off Glassford Street - The advantage of this place is that it tends to have a late-licence. Consequently, it has been known to be a haunt for Glasgwegian Avalonians at get-togethers. It's a gay bar and has a club downstairs on the weekends (at least) and if you get into the bar before 10pm entry to all parts of the place is free. I'm a big fan of this place and the dicor feels like a Louisiana House of the Rising Sun. At least after a few special lemonades that's what it feels like. THE BRUNSWICK - Brunswick Street - Nice bar, affiliated to a hotel of the same name. Relatively trendy. ARTA - Walls Street - The old Cheesemarket, Ok place with a Spanish theme, and a late licence, can be a little hard to find. I think this place also has a nightclub within it. RESTAURANTS LOOP - Bath Street and corner of Ingram Street with Albion Street - the addresses make this bunch look like a chain, but that's certainly not how they appear. Food is really good and relatively reasonable with a pre-theatre offer. Check it out. CAFI GANDOLFI - 64 Albion Street - Another Glasgow legend. A French/Polish menu. Beautiful looking place and v., v. comfy. A nice place for lunch and in particular breakfast. Might be closed Sundays There's also another branch of this place recently opened in the Habitat in the Buchanan Galleries (top of Buchanan St.) - menu is more or less the same and there is perhaps more seating, as well as it being more central. I'd still plump for the Albion Street branch though. PIZZA EXPRESS -151 Queen Street - Part of the fairly popular UK chain - decent solid fodder. PANCHO VILLA'S - 26 Bell Street - A good Mexican place which is reasonable and has good Margerita's. What more could you ever want? SARTI'S - 113 Wellington Street This is an Italian restauarant and there are two branches - one in Wellington Street and one in Renfield street. Great Italian food and v. popular, so try to get there promptly i.e. not for food before the gig! MOTHER INDIA - 28 Westminster Terrace, Sauchiehall Street in the West End part - This is a great Indian restaurant, food is fab and staff are nice. Try and get a table upstairs as the dicor is well worth the trip. JANSSEN'S - 1355Argyll Street in the West End part, opposite the Art Galleries - I feel obliged to include this place, partly 'cos it's great and partly because it's speciality is Dutch food. If you have dine at night in this place, the views over parts of the West End are really pretty. ICHIBAN - 50 Queen Street- A really excellent Japanese canteen place. V. nice food at extremely reasonable prices. It's an upstairs restaurant and the doorway is next to 'Flip' although that might well be under scaffolding at the moment! HAHA - Hope Street - part of a chain which I think finds itself in other UK cities. The bar is ok and if the food is of the standard of the other branches, it's absolutley fine and bound to be prompt which might be v. welcome if it's pre-gig fodder you're looking for. MAO'S - 84 Bruswick Street Nice food in this place. Not surprisingly it's Chinese although a little Thai influcence can be detected in the menu. V. easy going atmosphere. PEKING INN - 191 Hope Street - good Chinese food and I think has a special lunch menu. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 05:17:43 -0400 From: "Paul W. Here is the Dublin guide. I cut and pasted from WORD for the Glasgow guide which did something funny and made me look as if I can't spell. (e.g. cafi - what the hell was that?). Hopefully bugs have been ironed out on this one. Once again, delete if not interested. Trez DUBLIN GUIDE PUBS For those of you with a bit of time, there are literary pub crawls which have an ok reputation and can be a bit of a laugh. You are likely to see most of the famous pubs this way and fit in the only culture of your weekend. I think you can book these through the tourist office which is located on O'Connell Street opposite the GPO. STAG'S HEAD Dame Court a little difficult to find, a close entrance on Dame Street almost opposite the Central Bank with a mosaic of a Stag's head on the ground will lead you up to it. This is a famous Victorian bar: a lot of telly programmes etc. have been filmed here. Food is available (can't really vouch for it) but it really is a lovely bar and is a great venue for drinks. BRAZEN HEAD - 20 Lower Bridge Street - Meant to be the oldest pub in Dublin McDAID's -3 Harry Street - Pretty cool bar and most famous for Brendan Behan (literally, as opposed to metaphorically) painting the place red. V. busy at night as well as a really pleasant place during the day. O'NEILL'S BAR - Wicklow Street - another nice Victorian Bar. Can attract a rugger crowd but don't let that put you off. Nice cooling marble interiors. HORSESHOE BAR IN THE SHELBOURNE HOTEL -Northside of Stephen's Green - V. posh indeed, but I don't think they have a door policy. One of the places you might be most likely to see a celebrity(!) BAR IN THE MORISSON HOTEL - Ormond Quay (Northside of the Quays) - V. chi-chi dahling! - This place might have a bit of a door policy but it is worth a peek. You can imagine the chess scene in the original Thomas Crown Affair being filmed here. MESSRS. MAGUIRE -Southside of the Quays at O'Connell Bridge - I think this place has a micro-brewery. Handy and central. DAVY BYRNE'S - 21 Duke Street off Grafton Street - Fairly famous bar - has a reputation for a great Guinness & Oysters. TONER'S - 139 Lower Baggot Street - there are loads of bars in this street and this is one of the nicest. HOGAN'S - South Great George's Street - LATE BAR, kind of a bit BP (i.e. 'beautiful people' but not that bad) KEOGH'S - 9 Anne Street South, off Grafton Street - I really like this place which also has an upstairs bar. The downside of it is that it gets JAMMED on the weekends but that's part of its charm! CLARENCE HOTEL - Wellington Quay - Has a bar. Famous as being the hotel part-owned by Bono! Apparently has fab wood-panelled toilets. THE GEORGE -South Great George's Street at Dame Street end - This is a gay bar and, I think, has a nightclub attached to it. CAFI EN SEINE - 40 Dawson Street - Quite trendy, obviously has SFE overtones and has a lovely interior. One always feels as if one should be talking about 'Barcelona dahling' (for some strange reason) in here. ORMOND HOTEL - Grattan Bridge (I think) - Has a bar called The Sirens. 'nuff said. OLIVER ST. JOHN GOGARTY'S - Anglesea Street - This is in the Temple bar area which I HATE as a tourist trap. However, this bar and 'The Temple Bar' are the best in the area, and are quite nice. I know that this area will get talked up in the guidebooks but I find that bumping into stag/hen parties loses its charm after 5 seconds. Some of you may not agree though RESTAURANTS YAMAMORI - 71-72 South Great George's Street - nice Japanese food, relatively reasonable 101 TALBOT STREET -Talbot Street (not surprisingly) - upstairs restaurant, also quite a nice place for a fuller lunch STEPS OF ROME - Chatham Court, Chatham Street-An Italian place with a good reputation MAO'S - 2-3 Chatham Row, Good Chinese food with a bit of a Thai influence, although service here has proven to be less than friendly. Good food though. JACOB'S LADDER 4-5 Nassau Street - I don't know this place but it has a good reputation - good Irish food apparently. SNACK PLACES LOWER GEORGE STREET ARCADE - a variety of cheap and cheerful places are in here but there is a particularly nice place at the Lower George Street entrance which does soup, sandwiches etc for lunch. BEWLEY'S - You ABSOLUTELY have to go into one of these tea rooms even if just to buy a doughnut. They were originally teashops which were developed and are truly particular to Dublin style(irrespective of the odd one opened in Britain). There are 3 of note: the one in Grafton Street is the original and best although they did it up and (IMHO) took away much of its charm. It is a lovely place though and also has restaurants upstairs if you fancy having a fancier waitered meal. My favourite was always the Westmoreland Street branch which was Edwardian in style. There is another cute one on Lower George Street which is often overlooked, being off the beaten track but I think may be getting renovated at the moment. POWERSCOURT ARCADE - Fairly posh shopping centre which has a few nice places for coffee and cake and being checked out (as we all would be)by the beautiful people. THE GLOBE - South Great George's Street - quite trendy and a nice bar at night. CAFI IRIE - Fownes Street - the best sandwiches in Dublin apparently. JUICE _-South Great George's Street - Vegetarian place and macrobiotic food for the healthy among you. Maybe a good place for removing toxins the day after the gig. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 03:20:46 -0700 (PDT) From: Adrew Howard Subject: Re: [AVALON] BBC Online - Top of the Pops - TV Lineup I'm slightly disappointed at the line up for the TOTP2 show, seeing as one of the newspapers had listed Street Life on the lineup. It's astonishing, and a terrible shame that some of these inspirational performances seem lost forever. Look at the impact of Roxy's first appearance on Virgina Plain. What was the Beeb up to? Roxy's Street Life performance appeared on the 500th Top of the Pops show, which makes its loss even more inexcusable. Pyjamarama was another magic moment, the band kicking off the number with their backs turned to the audience. Original broadcasts of A Hard Rain, Love Is the Drug, You Go To My Head, and Both Ends Burning are all lost also. Is there any chance that these gems might suddenly turn up some day, just like some long lost episodes of Dr. Who? Or were the tapes binned? This review by Dave Simpson (1997, Uncut magazine) of the first Roxy television performance (of Ladytron) on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1972 might give an indication of how dazzling those early performances were: "The Old Grey Whistle Test, June 20, 1972. A haunting oboe refrain plays over an image of a glittering mirror-ball. Suddenly, the camera identifies the source of the sound - a tall gaunt figure with the instrument at his lips, wearing some sort of high collared space cape. Immediately the song morphs into that of a golden glove, extending from an arm bathed in leopardskin and operating a control board like some unknown alien invader from Star Trek. Abruptly, this striking image is replaced by one equally seductive - the face of drawn elegance, a futuristic long haired Elvis figure, fallen to earth to take its place in some devilish coven. The face turns towards the camera, singing with a mixture of smirking knowing and what can only be described as ennui, in a voice that appears to have been discovered by someone pressing his windpipe in order to gain more expression on each vowel. 'You've got me girl on the runaround, runaround," he begins, conjuring up a romantic predicament totally at odds with the science-fiction sound. As the camera draws away we realise that the drummer - another fashionably clad-type - is actually stagefront, and the vocalist is nearly at the rear. But there's no time to ponder on this because the oboe player has unleashed another hypnotic melody, and another figure comes into view. He's a guitarist, but in weird reflecting spex looks more like a giant insect. Every few seconds he bashes out a gigantic fuzzy chord which changes the entire timbre and direction of the music, by now a furious amalgam of neo-Twenties crooning and 21st century rock. As the somehow controlled cacophony reaches its pulsating zenith, the vocalist - his face now contorted into a twisted smile delivers his punchline: 'I'll use you and I'll confuse you and then I lose you/ But still you won't suspect me". The song is Ladytron. The vocalist is Bryan Ferry. The band are Roxy Music. And at this moment in time they are indisputably the most explosive and imminently influential pop group in the world" _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/ ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2001 11:41:55 -0000 From: "Therese O'Donnell" Subject: Re: [AVALON] BBC Online - Top of the Pops - TV Lineup Thank you Andrew! I just want to send out an on-list cheer to Gene for organizing this -- I suppose any of us Atlanta show-goers could have suggested it, but it was Gene's initiative and drive that made it happen. Now six of us will have fabulous seats and won't be worrying until late in the month about whether we'll have tickets and where they'll be. That alone is worth the extra $$$! So thanks again, Gene, from myself and Melissa. Looking forward to seeing you and our fellow table-dwellers there! later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 22:46:50 +0100 From: "David Squires " Subject: [AVALON] Roxy Tour meet-ups Dear All I've updated the website, concentrating on the upcoming Irish and UK concerts. More updates over the next few days. I'm sorry for the inactivity on this front, due to far too much activity on others! Just to re-cap on how to get your details on to the pages. 1. You contact me off list at Roxy_Tour@squires.nildram.co.uk and let me know which date or dates you'll be at. 2. I will collect and collate this information (names and email addresses) and put it up on the website. 3. Everybody will then know who will be at each show and can then make contact _off list_ if they so wish. Details of a venue for a pre or post gig meeting can also be posted to the web page via the above address.
