Don't overlook Newark International Airport, which I use all the time. I think it's easier to get into Manhattan from there, than from JFK or LaGuardia, (imho). Unfortunately, its Continental Airlines terminal is a mess, but United's terminal is pretty darn efficient, relatively speaking. Ida I agree Ida. If I'm heading straight into NYC, I always use Newark if I can. It's an $11 bus ride from the Port Authority Building where you just hop straight out, hail a cab and disappear into the gritty Manhattan night air hung heavy with the smell of pretzels. You can't beat it. I long gave up with the mayhem of JFK and the venom of taxi drivers who have queued for ages only to find I merely wanted a $15 ride to Queens. And thanks to Air Flight Stewardess O'Donnell for the flight info. Still trying to find a cheaper direct flight but to no avail. Still here, Arnie but reading digests only. It seems as if almost all the Avalonian elders are quiet these days. Where are you all? We seem to age faster in cyberspace, where one month is a generation gap. Six long Avalonian years? That's an era. Here are some bits and pieces, most of which I've been meaning to post for some time. Fellow Avalonian wrinklies will be familiar with the inconsistent tone, the inexcusable length and the total absence of a theme in this message. For the rest: sorry. If it's any consolation, it doesn't happen very often. ===== There's some Morrissey vs Ferry stuff going on here: Would any US subscribers care to comment on whether the Ferry interview referred to above was genuine? I'm no Morrissey fan, though I did like the first few albums by The Smiths and do remember Ferry (in a somewhat unexpected move) defending Morrissey in print against accusations of racism. "He's an intelligent man," said Bryan at the time. ===== Just in from the Department of Silly Thoughts. It's from a solo Ferry record but wouldn't it be cool for Roxy to do Wildcat Days on tour? For our pleasure, it harked back to that catwalk album cover, the Ferry/Eno bickering and those strange, caterwauling times - wildcat days, lonely nights. Perhaps Amanda Lear could be persuaded to contribute backing vocals, sharing a stage with Roxy again after so many years, despite having called Ferry "old and fat" not so long ago. Bryan seems quite the forgiving type these days. Ferry claimed at the time of the song's release that it was the closest thing then available to a Roxy reunion and that it featured Mackay and Manzanera but if Phil does play on it, he doesn't get credited for it. Ah, but a Ferry/Eno track with Mackay sax and plenty of room for Manzanera and Spedding to do battle would be just the ticket on stage. And I reckon TGPT would have a fine, fine time with it, too. (That's no coincidence, of course.) ====== Speaking of credits, those who performed so brilliantly on Boys & Girls fully deserve to be called The Players (in every sense - I gather that these were, let's say, heady days for Bryan) as they were on the sleeves of the LPs that some of us bought back in '85. Why, then, are they listed as mere 'musicians' on the CD releases, even on the card-jacketed product that's supposed to be an LP replica? It's a disgrace. ====== Those planning to follow the band around Europe will find it necessary to learn some basic Esperanto, which has almost entirely replaced the archaic latin-derived romance languages on the European mainland. Here's a good place to start, from someone who spells 'Bryan' correctly but can't quite manage 'Morrissey'. ===== A little Spanish is still apparently in use, however and Bryan Ferry happens to be the unwitting star of a chirpy little Spanish ode to halitosis (see below) that has been on one unformatted web page for around 4 or 5 years but now appears in several places and in several formats. Perhaps one of our new Spanish-speaking subscribers could give us the full story and a suitably Byronesque translation. Here's one location: And here's the work itself. Both Google's translation service (for Spanish, Italian, German, French and Portugese but - shockingly - not Esperanto) and Altavista's Babelfish offer amusing English renditions. ====== Jhelisa Anderson, who contributed low, sultry, and beautiful vocals to Mamouna (it's predominantly her voice backing Bryan's on Chain Reaction - "it never stop" - and the wonderful Don't Want to Know) released a solo album - not her first - called Language Electric in 1997. Aside from the swirling title track, its standouts were Freedom from Pity and an intense, melancholic instrumental string arrangement that she called Bete Noire. Well worth a listen, unless your name's Woody Allen. (Another of the album's songs is called That's Bullshit Woody and it pulls no punches.) ====== John Cale's on the road again. I saw him play Cardiff back in '99 and he was wonderful. He's there again in mid-June. Colin Good is a fine musical director but I still say Mr. Cale would have been a finer one :-) How would For Your Pleasure have turned out if Ferry had taken him up on his offer to produce it? ====== I'm greatly enjoying the new Eno/Schwalm album, Drawn from Life. On it, you can hear sonic hints of Eno releases past (particularly The Shutov Assembly and the Glitterberg/Spinner tracks) taken to a new place entirely but some of the sounds and styles from his work on Mamouna and This Love make themselves heard, too. Emotional depth and aural beauty are there for everyone to hear on so many of Brian's albums and this one's no exception. Laurie Anderson's guest vocal is a treat, too. ====== Anyone here going to Werchter? I had a fantastic time there with a happily deranged bunch of friends in '97 (highlights: The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Spearhead and David Byrne who, dressed in a lawn suit, and with grim determination, out-bassed *every* dance act on the bill) and always wanted an excuse to go back. Excuses don't come much better than this one. ====== "AUTHOR = Bill MacCormick", says the source code behind Phil Manzanera's web review of Roxy's TOTP2 performance. Would that be *the* Bill MacCormick or am I getting mixed up here? And if so, how do we go about explaining the use of the description 'river-boat gambler' in both Mr Stockman's excellent TOTP2 post - referring to Mr. Manzanera's appearance - and the page above - referring this time to Mr Spedding's presentation? ====== The 39 Steps - the film more than the book - is such a Ferry thing, right down to Peggy Ashcroft's bizarre accent. Priceless, pre-Hollywood Hitchcock. It goes for a song on multi-region DVD - don't miss out. It's Chance Meeting rolled into Mamouna and Slave to Love and Bryan's song of the same name suits it perfectly. Don't ask me why: you *don't* ask why. ====== This is probably long enough to have filled a digest. Apologies.
