Nigel. It's a clichid Geordie thing, well actually it's a Northern roots thing. Old blokes in those there parts sport flat caps, overcoats and scarves (sounds familiar?) and keep and race pigeons. The little chap has amused readers of all ages throughout the UK - and indeed world-wide - in Britain's most widely syndicated strip. Reg Smythe was born in Hartlepool in 1917, the son of a boat-builder. He left school at fourteen, worked as a butcher's delivery boy, joined the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1936, and submitted cartoons to Cairo magazines during the war. After a spell as a post-office telephone clerk, he started freelancing as a cartoonist, joining the Daily Mirror in 1954. Influenced by his cartoonist mentor Leslie Harding ('Styx') he produced the regular feature 'Laughter at Work' before creating 'Andy Capp' in 1957. Syndicated to 1400 newspapers in 31 countries, read by 175 million people and translated into 13 languages, the strip - based on the flat-capped Northerner and the pun 'handicap' - became a national institution. Andy recalled placing an ad reading 'rock & roll oboe player requires band', and not getting any replies. Cue general hilarity. There's a lot of good-natured banter between them which I've never heard before - but perhaps that has something to do with the fact I've never heard all three interviewed at the same time; so many times. My fave moment was the Johnnie Walker interview when JW opined that AM might be the 'peacemaker' between the egos of the others (all this good-naturedly) and as AM started to deny this, PM stated 'he's the troublemaker'; BF adding 'he's our spiritual guide - guru - - religious advisor'; more laffs. The same good vibes were also evident between them during brief smiley chats onstage at TOTP2. This may be seen by cynics as a bit of a gush; but I continue to be really, well, pleased by the general flavour of what's occurring. In fact - hooray! Many many thanks to all concerned in putting together these tapes, very professionally done, a lot of hard work must have gone into them. My highlights are the legendary Twiggy duet, which I've been banging on about on this list for 18 months now. The duet with Cilla Black on "It's My Party" must be one of the best tv moments of all time, with Bryan struggling to keep a straight face, cheese with a capital C, or should that be kitsch? Watching the early Roxy I'm reminded just how raw & powerful they were in their live performances, which was the reason I fell in love with them originally, they almost sound like an early punk group with the blistering energy. Thanks again to everyone involved in it, I don't wish to name names in case I omit anyone, but bloody hell , this is fantastic!! The original concert date of July 25, 2001 has not been changed. It has been guessed elsewhere that maybe an error might have occurred by someone seeing a "two-five" & and then banging out a "one-five". Also as mentioned, it would really take an amazing feat, and plaenty of "Hot Joe", for any road crew get from Atlanta to Toronto, 800 miles as the crow flies, in time for a next day's set up. But you know what else? Just 9 Days to Dublin & that Live Roxy Music! Maggie Yes....the Atlanta date is still slated for the original date of July 25th. A possible a simple error by someone involved in the Atlanta area seeing a 25 and then typing a 15.
