Donizetti? In the languages that come from latin, the word "favorito/favorita" does not only mean "favorite", in the sense you say "That's my favorite shirt": it also means that you have a lot of consideration for someone, just because you are physically atracted by this person, and this person knows that and satisfies you. Normally, only people who have a lot of power can have favoritas! Resuming: favorita is "favorite lover". Practical example: "Marie Antoinette was the favorita of the king". Favorita is one of the few italian-spanish-portuguese words (such as bravo, viva, siesta, fiesta) that is known outside southern europe. In my opinion, I think it was funny and snobbish to put it in the lyrics of "Mother of Pearl". Sorry for the (maybe boring) explanation and my english (worse each day),Cheers, Nacho. Ya know, it would be very cool, IMHO, if they opened the show with it. But then, I'm partial since it was the very first Roxy song I ever heard. Tickets go on sale on Sunday, June 3 at 10:00am, but this is only for people buying full B-series and mini-series tickets. Tickets for this show ONLY may not go on sale for about 2 1/2 weeks after this(only crap will probably be left). Just thought folks would want to know! Which would make it the first North American date, one day before Toronto. That's going to be quite a logistics feat -- I doubt Roxy is going to do the two-stages/same-tour setup employed by huge touring acts like Pink Floyd, U2, etc. (i.e., while performing on one stage, another is being set up at the next stop). The change of Atlanta's date would also leave a gap between the 24th (2nd NY show) and 29th (Detroit). It would be a great spot to add a midwestern or upper southern stop, say Cleveland or (fingers still crossed) Nashville or Memphis. Note this is utter wishful thinking on my part; I don't have access to any source. later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 12:50:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Maggie Curran Subject: Re: [AVALON] OFFICIAL ATLANTA CONCERT DATE Thanks much, Art! Thought I thanked Art at the end of my post, but now I see that I didn't! So thanks, Art! Keeping this from being a one-liner, we finally watched VELVET GOLDMINE this weekend (on DVD), so even though it's a long-dead thread, thought I'd post my thoughts as just sent to Fegmaniax! (the Robyn Hitchcock list). Apologies if any of you see this twice. VELVET GOLDMINE was visually sumptuous, the music was splendid, and Eddie Izzard was great as Brian Slade's venal manager (was the change-of-managers scene straight outta the underrated ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS or what?). Otherwise -- eep, what a humongous mess. I'm not opposed to films that go for impressionistic approaches, eschewing straightforward narrative to go for something more abstract yet more visceral. But you have to be really, really, really smart about it to pull it off, and Todd Haynes didn't even come close, so the whole thing quickly degenerates into a confused mess, even lacking the "ohmyGAWDwhatthehellwasthat?" sort of scene that makes even the worst Ken Russell movies worth at least one viewing. And we were completely icked out by Christian Bale's character -- not by his latent homosexuality, but by his general creepiness (which might have played into the decision to cast him in the lead in AMERICAN PSYCHO). The lack of sympathy for this "narrator/young-man-discovering-himself-through-the-liberation-of-the-times" left a hole in the film almost as gaping as the lack of cohesive vision or the waste of the intriguing Jack Fairy character. Somehow I think Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor's Iggy/Lou character) at his most messed-up would have had him deloused before sleeping with him! None of this stopped us from singing along with "2HB," "20th Century Boy," or "Needle in the Camel's Eye," but the film doesn't come close to living up to the music. Bowie may have been wise to keep his own music out of this train wreck; maybe his own long-promised film about the period will get it right. later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 21:38:09 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Johnny=20Reece?= Subject: [AVALON] They've escaped... Hi, just to let you all know the rather serious news that some of the new Videos have escaped, in the last 48 hours. These normally placid, quiet, nocturnal creatures, have slinked off in the middle of the night, in a VHS format, to the designated residences of some of the people who were first to order, from the UK and Europe, way back in April, 2000. Do not be alarmed, there is no cause for concern. Another batch of these little blighters are due for release into the wild in the next week or so, whereby the remaining number will once again go into hibernation between the dates of June 6th and 14th, as Mr & Mrs Strandpower & family will be otherwise engaged seeing a few concerts by old blokes in leather trousers. Following these dates, the remaining number will be mailed during the last 2 weeks of June. As for their sister-species, 'Rhapsodus Divinus' and 'Pentus Perfectus' (otherwise known as the NTSC version of the breed) - we will be receiving these on or around June 17th, and all will escape in one massive migration to foreign climes, between the dates of June 18th and June 30th. Keep watching your local nature programmes for future updates.
