I learned my lesson with Todd Rundgren-I gave up on him sometime in the 80's with his slimmed down Utopia mainly because I was into another "type" of music. One thing that annoys me to the point of response (on that site) is when people say one thing, and then act in another...such as constantly berating the initial three members of this "cynical / non-creative / over priced / blah blah" Roxy incarnation, and then loudly applauding when the (now near god-like) PT jumped on this "bandwagon." Also the same people turning up at TOTP2 after months of expressing their disinterest in the new tour. All of these points I have pointed out to the guilty (IMO) parties on the site (which is why I don't mind posting these opinions on this list) at the time. Some of these posts did result in very good discussions (even with one of the most notorious culprits there) about aspects of Roxy which I had not considered, making me re-evaluate such maters as the importance of PT in the "live" dynamic of Roxy... which is a shame and a waste when you see the amount of abuse / bullying / name calling / CAPITAL LETTER SHOUTING etc that goes on there, a good portion of it may be tongue in cheek and meant with a hearty ;-) on the end, but a constant culture of this is not healthy. anyway...who's for a game of off-ground touch Neil - ----- Original Message ----- From: Grant Goggans To: Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2001 12:56 AM Subject: [AVALON] Re: Negative people > Well, that's the only time I've been to that board in almost a year and only > the first post. Colleen, I take your point on talking about people who aren't here, but I thought it would just encourage them if I said something on the message board. Anyway, I'm sure it will all come out in the wash. They'll soon get bored if they are just ignored. Just glad I'm not imagining things, Take care Tracy _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 14:53:48 -0700 From: David Firmin Subject: [AVALON] Bowl-A-Rama If I only knew at the time. I posted something on Andy Mackay's forum way back on December 03, 1999. It's kind of eerie. (hey! cease that wishful thinking) And for what it's worth, I have indeed heard from Bahi and he's fine (and I've cc'd him on this so he knows he's missed). Donizetti? One of the things I respect most about Bryan Ferry is the fact that he's the only Rock Star who could ever have used the phrase "European literary tradition" in a promo interview (1994, Mamouna). The guy is one cultured dude. As a result, I usually assume there's more going on in his lyrics than at first meets the eye. A case in point, from "Mother of Pearl," is the line "but you are my favorita." Where does this odd reference come from? Is Ferry combining "favorite" and "Rita"? If so, why?-"favorita" doesn't complete a rhyme and anyway whose this Rita? He must have something in mind . . . Mystery solved. To Ferry's allusions to Nietzsche in the same song, to Yeats/Proust in "Party Doll," etc. we can now add an allusion to Gaetano Donizetti. Yes, the 19th-century Italian composer whose madwoman-with-a-knife opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" is still an opera house staple. Seems that in 1840 Donizetti wrote an opera named "La Favorita," a lurid piece about a king and his mistress that plumbs the themes of sex, ambition, and concealed identity. In fact, one synopsis refers to the opera's heroine in Ferryesque terms as an "unknown woman so beautiful that she has shaken his [the hero's] faith." In short, Ferry is IMHO alluding to Donizetti's opera in "Mother of Pearl" because its plot about a woman's concealed identity echoes the artificial vs. real theme that informs the whole song. Ferry has, after all, mentioned his taste for opera in more than one interview and is obviously capable of this kind of allusiveness. "High-brow, holy," indeed! Just doing my bit for Ferry exegesis . . .
