My worst fears was that they would sound the same as when they left off (which I assume was as per the live Heart Still Beating performance - lame/tired/a shadow of their Viva! selves.) It was indeed raw- and exciting, was this inclusion of Paul Thompson bearing fruit. Formula. ((BF+PM+AM)/time) x TGPT = life (No all you sci-fi fans, it's not 42) OOTB was spellbinding; Lucy gave her all on the solo and boy, was she the dogs' bollocks! I read speculation that this may not be used on the TV airing!!! This would be a tremendous mistake as it showcases to a new "Brit Pop (sorry)" fed generation that Roxy is not all about Avalon and Dance Away and, indeed, has its roots firmly embedded in their type of compost (as it were.) If they want to re-recruit a wider audience than this is the way forward. Even LITD sounded fresh again. I have always believed the strength in this track was the tight, edginess of the production. This quality I have never heard in the (limited) times I have heard this played live, to the point where I generally dislike the song when its dragged up at the end of every sodding gig. Similar could be said of Do The Strand, the dancing girls were a class touch of high jinx. The set-ups in between the songs were, for me, a good little insight in to the current dynamic in the band, PM and AM seamed quite happy to be trade smiles with the various cheeky comments hurled at them from the audience. Ferry seamed, initially on edge, at one stage sloped off to have a quick debate with Colin Good (who seams to be a prominent force with Bryan now and, I'm betting, in the future), after which he seamed to relax a bit, noticeably so during and after the photo shot with the gals (no Thommo!!?) The down side was the repeated performances of Jealous Guy. I seam to remember Phils guitar was not as prominent on the original performance as it should have been and this may have necessitated the third attempt. I was aching for a performance of If There Is Something/Both Ends Burning/Mother Of Pearl or Streetlife. All of which would have been a wise move re: attracting new fans, but none appeared. Instead they repeated Virginia Plain, which I felt was a bit unnecessary, especially if it was repeated at the expense of the above. The gig came to an end and we all shuffled out, I seized the opportunity to introduce myself to Reecey (don't worry about the "buzzing" old pal, stop beating yourself up and get the videos to us!!) Unfortunately we could not hang around post-performance, my good lady wife was by now crippled by her new shoes (not the only casualty, as a lady walking behind us from the studios, with her husband/partner, was positively hobbling while holding her left buttock- hope she feels better today!) . As we limped back to the subway, pausing only briefly in the local Weatherspoons, we reflected on not only our first experience of a Roxy gig, but the first Roxy gig in 18 long years, and the gigs to come. "See you on the tour!" said Bryan. No my dear friend.we'll see you! All the best Neil Jones P.S. anyone know where you can get a good ploughmans in the Birmingham NEC area? P.P.S. Sorry to those who did not get in.if its any consolation you are in for a fabulous tour! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 23:59:28 +0100 From: "ncjones.lewis2" Subject: Re: [AVALON] riverside audience... I've been on this list for only a short while, but I met so many nice people last night, who seemed to welcome me like an old friend. (not really surprising - we are talking about RM fans here!). I had only joined the queue for a few minutes when someone shook my hand and introduced themselves (hi, Jonathan!) after that, I simply never stopped talking to people. As for the gig itself? Well, what can I say that hasn't been said already, a couple of dozen times over: The guys were brilliant, as good as ever, as if they've never been away. If that was but a small taster of what awaits us, then we are all in for one heck of a treat! I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to witness that momentous (monumental?) event, and I feel dreadfully sorry for those unfortunates who didn't get in after a lot of time and money spent to get there. My heart goes out to you guys, because I know it would have gutted me completely. So, thanks again to everybody that made me feel like "one of the family", and especially to Jocelyn and Reecey for my spare ticket. Luv ya all, Helena. P.S.
