It'll be great to hear Roxy Live again ... but the STYLE comes through the visuals, eh? I know we're thinking prematurely since it hasn't aired, and all five songs might not make it to the broadcast version, but I'd be happy to help tree a CD of the show. While I would love to see it too, I only have one VCR and my kids tend to monopolize it. I can listen to a CD just about any time. But I'm sure once it airs, some thoughtful sorts will be videoing it, from which screen caps can be drawn for cover art, right? Right? This is a good point, but it's only by having hits that good pop artists enter the mainstream culture and become therefore popular. You can be a very gifted musician and make superb music, but if you're only selling three copies you can't possibly be a popular artist. Of course there are excellent people around. But I do think there is truth in the view that the music that is most widley heard, is at the turn of the century in very bad shape. I can't imagine the extraordinary Ray Davies becoming a mainstream figure were he a young man now, nor Dylan for that matter. And I think Roxy Music would be recording, if at all, for a tiny label based in (say) Manchester. I said to a friend who was on his high horse about Enimen that I thought Britney Spears was much more offensive, because she is preparing the next generation of kids whose cultural experience will be limited to the corporate crap that's easy to find and easy to 'consume'. ( The apt word.) The people whose reading will be limited to slick magazines and Jackie Collins novels, whose idea of an actor will be Tom Cruise, whose musical taste will run from Disney tunes to the nothingness that passes now for Country. And who will, of course, bare their empty souls to Oprah for five seconds of attention. Yes, you're right, there's good stuff around, but the significance of Kristen Hersh or Pavement is obviously limited simply because no-one buys them. People in great numbers ( in Europe anyway) actually bought VIRGINIA PLAIN and AVALON and LET'S STICK TOGETHER and OUT OF THE BLUE, and WATERLOO SUNSET too and BLOWIN' IN THE WIND and.. oh, and SERGEANT PEPPER! And RUNNING UP THAT HILL. ( Fill in your favourite here.) The nature of Pop music pretty much requires it to bleed into the heart of the culture. And that ain't happening. Enjoyed all the TOTP pieces, by the way. Interesting to note the preponderance of pre-break-up Roxy. I wonder if the same bias will be evident on the tour. Probably not, but I'm surprised there were none of the big hits of the late seventies on what is, after all, a programme about hits! ( But I did notice that DANCE AWAY was planned for.) But most of all I am jealous of the lot of you who got to go. While in part it is a generalization I also have to say that of course I found great music in the 80's (New Order, ABC, Japan, and of course many many others) and of course there has been many many fine albums in the 90's (Blur, early Oasis, Pulp, Radiohead, Guided By Voices, very early Nine Inch Nails, Chemical Brothers, etc) But pound for pound, year for year, I feel like the 70's had the best music-now that might have a lot to do with my age at the time-I was 14 in 1970 so the 70's represented my prime music years-so of course there has to be a lot of bias on my part. I mean music was my life as a teenager, it defined who I was, that has not been the case for many years. john ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 14:04:04 -0000 From: "Therese O'Donnell" Subject: [AVALON] overheard snippets BTW While the band were waiting between songs and playing around last night, did I hear what sounded like the opening to 'Amazona'? Managed to get onto the balcony in time for OOTB (long story in part two). Seeing Tommo belting out that riff, with Andy, Manzo and Ferry all present and correct was almost too much. TGPT is the heartbeat of Roxy without a shadow of doubt. Knowing Lucy violin solo was coming was like waiting for the cork to pop. And pop it certainly did - a fine replacement for Eddie. LITD, Strand, JG and VP all followed. Up on the balcony the sound was a bit muddy but good enough to recognise the Tommo/Katz axis could be one of Roxy's best. Andy looked very relaxed as did Manzo, both played within themselves but hit the spot every time. The Eno VCS3 was in evidence for VP - a nice touch. Overall I thought they looked and sounded in fine fettle. With the sound boosted for the large shows Roxy could be at their most awesome. A special hello and thanks to the lady in the red top who waited with us in the queue for 90 minutes and made it on stage for a BF autograph - enjoy the Wembley shows. Also to the lad from Ireland and the QPR fan and those who enjoyed the show from the balcony. I was aiming to get to Riverside around 5.30 but my train from Bristol was delayed by a warped rail. I eventually rolled up at 6.40, found my lady and queued in the fan line. Made it to the front and then nothing. We stood there for 90mins watching 'guests, PRs, blaggers and god knows who worm their way in. One young lady even threatened to phone her Mum if she did not get in. Time went on as the fan queue got longer and longer. It was 8.10. There were people from Manchester, London, Sheffield standing to watch a band they loved play live for the first time in 20 years while people who obviously though Virginia Plain was the name of the bass player. And then the bearded man came out and said it was full. We were not best pleased and a lot of people argued stated facts and finally convinced him that someting had gone wrong. Thank God it wasn't a Motorhead show I was about to explode when another large man came out and announced we (most of us) would get on the balcony. We were taken in and the rest is history as they say. I do not blame the BBC or the Riverside studio but the management/record company. It must have been obvious to anyone that a lot of fans would want to get in - the numbers seemed to take everyone by surprise. After all it was 20 years ago and they know what the ticket demand for the tour is like!!!!! So why not get a better balance, understand that the people queuing are the real fans and are their because they love the band not because they want to be 'seen'. I totally understand that there a key music bis people and friends and family who should be there but at the end of the day we buy the CDs, the vids and show tickets. What then rubbed salt into the wound was the good review on the Manzo site. Right at the top of the review was a fawning piece about wrist tags and special guests. Despite all this I still love the band, the fans I met were great and at the end of the day the management/record company has done a great job so far with the tour. But please ladies and gents don't take the **** again. The show was great and in a strange way the 'queue made it worthwhile. Hello to the nice lady in the red top. thanks for your company. As it was Top Of The Pops I went to the BBC studios on arrival in London. I met Jocelyn and after half an hours chat in the BBC canteen I realised I was at the wrong studios and in fact I was chatting with Dot Cotten. It's hard to add anything at this late hour. My own relief was that they didn't look or sound like ageing has-beens like most other 50 something rock stars who reform after 20 years do. They looked like confident, fit, healthy and so glad to be there. The most endearing thing for me was the banter between Bryan, Phil & Andy and knowing how that comradeship will be a catalyst for many fine performances to come. I bumped into Paul Thompson in the bar before the gig and spoke to him briefly. I just had to ask him to utter those 3 words "Your Applications Failed" which he did in his finest Geordie brogue. I suppose I could now say that I am the first person to have a private rendition of the Accapalla version of this fine roxy b-side. One thing I would say is that Paul appreciated the welcome from the fans but it wasn't left at that. He appeared to get embarrassed and uncomfortable with his name constantly being shouted out. There seemed to be a crowd in one corner were overdoing it a bit and Paul seemed uneasy about it after a while. Looking forward to the tour Dublin here I come John O'Brien ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 20:48:16 +0100 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: [AVALON] Fw: TOTP2 - the producer writes.... Chris Thanks for that and for all your news bits. I got in and really felt for those who didn't but somehow the whole 'invited guests' thing on the door left a bad taste. Please thank Mark for the note and for his efforts to get everyone in. I don't believe it was down to him. I had my vent - I feel better I'll be in Birmingham and can't wait. (Sorry of this post repeats any details posted earlier.but there ya'go.) Arrival in the hotel at 1.30pm Tube to Hammersmith at 3pm Arrival at pub across the road at 4pm -ish. Sat outside said pub and ate the worst ploughmans ever, after ordering it and returning to my table the comedy Irish landlady appeared to tell me that they had no French bread, and would sliced white be O.K. (ironically after telling me earlier that..(insert comedy Irish accent)."you know, there's one thing we haven't got is plaice." which put paid to my original order of fish'n'chips. (Sorry, am I getting side tracked here?) A black land rover type vehicle whizzed around to the side entrance followed by scurrying fans, should I give chase as well? No, Yes, No.Oh.Yes. By the time I got there any commotion that may have occurred..had, and I was left hanging around the BBC unit trucks like a stalker. I took the walk of shame back to the pub and suffered a "sad B&$*#"#$" look from my goodlady wife. Anyway, a couple of bottles of Becks later (to wash away the taste of the ploughmans you understand.honestly, sliced white bread, a small chunk of cheddar, two pieces of cucumber, a slice of tomato and hardly any pickle!!!! Scandalous!!!!) we could see the queue starting to grow. Time to join. While standing in the queue I became aware that there were Avalonians in the area, both by faces I had seen on the Avalon site profiles and various conversations and I must admit I felt a bit of a shit for not introducing myself more readily, a bit shy you see!!! So I remembered something about curing phobias, aversion therapy I think its called where people who suffer from arachnophobias expose themselves to tarantulas, people who suffer from vertigo stand on skyscrapers etc..so..It took the bull by the horns...and introduced myself to Jocelyn ;-)...my god, Dermund didn't stand a chance! (Still owe you a drink BTW!) After much more queuing and indecision about another lager run across the road, we were finally let in and allowed to queue again. More indecision about a lager run (I should point out that I have the bladder of a four-year-old and didn't want to spend LITD cross-legged.) Finally let in the studio (the details of which have already been documented) to hear the warm-up guy say that he "had the front row sorted, we now need people for the podiums!" Sod that, head down, join the front row(s), would you believe it, I appear to be right behind Reecey (sorry about my over excited whoo-hoos, whey-hays by the way, hope I did not deafen you Mr. Reece p.s. sorry about the garlic also.) Warm ups ensued and then on came the gladiators. What a wonderful line-up, I was expecting great things out of the inclusion of the ATGB band members in this line-up and I was not disappointed. Then, 18 years after Roxy last dissolved, the intro of Virginia Plain rose out of the amps like a phoenix to deliver us a (raw?. maybe) blast from the past, and a taste of the future. .......................................... more to follow (if you are interested in the demented babbling of a Welshman.) ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #193 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
