Most interesting post. Thank you. Exactly! If you pick up Cobra Verde's last album...you would think it was a Roxy album. The beautiful, classy, exotic women all over the cover, a fold-out with an insert. It's obvious that they "grew up" with Roxy as many here did. I really took offense to the heartless and clueless, "sorry cleveland" posts that I had to endure when "our" concert never was actually booked. But, being from Cleveland, I am used to stupid comments from the uniformed. Rent "Almost Famous", Cameron Crowe and Peter Frampton's "love letter" to Cleveland. There is a shot with a WMMS Banner displayed in it... a "Cleveland Scene " magazine appears on Ben Fong Torres' desk at Rolling Stone in another shot... the concert in the middle of the movie takes place at Cleveland's Music Hall, there is a quick glimpse of the original WMMS bumper sticker...which has a large mushroom ala "Alice in Wonderland"...Underneath the mushroom is a cricket or grasshopper sitting against the stump with a joint in his mouth. It was later on that WMMS went to the Buzzard logo. (And got increasingly more corporate) And of course another scene takes place at the old Cleveland Swingos restuarant/hotel. You see Swingos on the side of the hotel marquee briefly in the movie. They ran a story on the history of Swingo's a few weeks after "Almost Famous" came out. Of course, it was only in Cleveland papers. But there was a really cool pic of Bryan Ferry sitting in "the gold room" on this elegant baroque armchair. He had one leg crossed casually over another, and a long cigarette in his hand. Swingos "catered" to the rock acts of the time. Elvis Presley would use it as his homebase when he did his 70's tours. Jim Swingo owned the hotel and made sure all the rock stars of the day were treated with the utmost tolerance and special treatment. When Led Zeppelin would come and destroy the place as they rampaged through America, Jim would only say: "Well, we knew we would be remodeling after Jimmy and the boys were in town" Kate Hudson's character is a woman from Cleveland who actually was a "band aid". They asked this cleveland woman in the article, "Did you see the movie yet", she said: " My memories are so good about that time in my life, I don't want to see it and dilute them." I wish I could get a photo album of what went on at Swingo's, some kids here were smart enough to "hang around" at Swingos back then...I was a wee bit too young. Anyway, for all you people out there who still can't understand why Cleveland got the rock n roll hall of fame...all I can say is Cleveland rocked and rolled with Alan Freed and continued to be a hotbed of music through the 70's and 80's. The record execs, and the artists knew that, that's why we got it. Remember, Alan Freed was playing R and B records in 1951 in Cleveland, black music for white kids. It took guts back then to do that, and it took guts for radio to play it. Ahmet Ertegun's Atlantic Records early on was all about r and b. Put 2 and 2 together folks...Ahmet appreciated what Alan Freed and others did in Cleveland. The crazy concert mania that went on, the breaking of artists, Swingos, The AGORA's, Kid Leo, WMMS, Scene, and Belkin Productions all worked together to create a real buzz....man we had it made back then! I just thank Frampton and Cameron Crowe for showing a piece of history that I truly treasure more as I get to be "old". Of course, they made no mention of Cleveland in the trailers or the hype surrounding the release of the movie. Because they knew what the national attitude toward Cleveland is...they knew saying it was about Cleveland in the 70's would not help sell tickets. So they said it was a "representation" of the 70's rock era. Well, yea, and it happened in a really, really bigtime wayin good ole Cleveland. I lived in Philly for 11 years, went to concerts all up and down the east coast, detroit, seattle, pittsburgh, cincinnati, st. louis, etc, etc...I always missed the mania that is a cleveland rock concert. The same energy that created the "Dawg Pound" is evident at concert halls throughout cleveland history. I took it for granted until I moved away a couple times early in life. I am back now, and won't move away again. Nope, never again. Love music and concerts WAY too much. __________Rocks" LP Simone Yahoo! For the whole day toaday, well at least after a morning shower, I felt this gargantuan wonder and fevered anticipation of that would be waiting for me at home later this evening. I knew when I arrived home there would be letters to be opened. Letters that could only arrive today and not one day sooner. Simply stated, today was the first day of live performances by "Roxy Music". There it is. The final letter from the first group has arrived. Titled :"The Return fo Roxy Music" by Simon. Good God, has the Grail finally come home? I say YES before I open the first one! I feel these boys are eager, rested and ready to play. We know how good they are, that's why we are all here. I had got it into my head that I had to wear a yellow shirt at TOTP, but cannot explain why, and I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly apologise to Chris Turner for dragging him round various North London shopping centres until I found one. I then received a call from Andy Mol early afternoon, who insisted I must wear a black suit with it, for the Gig. I couldn't argue with him, because he's got my ticket for Rotterdam. Various phone calls and garbled ansaphone messages followed, from the likes of John O'Brien, Jocelyn, and Simon G. Tension was building. 3.30pm, and off we went, very nervous, very svelte, very early. 4.30pm, and we're in the queue - by no means the first ones there. Hi to Colette, Jane, Jim, Gary, Ivor, Diane, ED & Renate all the way from the Netherlands, and Lee, already there. Monica appeared later - though she'd been around to see the Band arrive about 2.30. Then came Trez (future Rock Chick - more exclusive news on this as it happens during the Roxy tour) and brother Raymond. Finally, Jocelyn and Lindsey, Andrew, Patricia, Martinot, Simon G & Kirsty, and of course John O'Brien, who had spent a not so thrilling entire night before on a sleeper train from Inverness. Sorry if I've missed anyone out - - loads of faces, instantly recognisable from the remnants of the ATGB Tour last year. We were back. We queued for about 4 years, due to a 'technical problem', despite promises of us being let in at 5pm - which became 5.30, then 6, 6.30, them 7pm. In at last, and straight to the Bar, after having to have our hands date stamped - (hey, we KNOW what day it is - - it's the return of ROXY MUSIC, fer chrissakes !). Thommo was in the Bar - I don't know how many times he must have heard the phrase "hey, great to have you in the Band, Paul" - but his grin said it all. We queued for another 4 years outside the studio doors, and in we went, the 'usual suspects' at the front. Amazing to look around, and see so many people I knew. Cool !
