He was in Dr Feelgood from 1987 to 1992. After leaving Dr Feelgood he played bass for three years in the ERIC CLAPTON Band. Dave also worked and toured with PAUL CARRACK, the band was opening on the Sting UK-Tour 1997, having already toured Europe with Sting earlier in 1996. Dave is a really good songwriter (just lend your ears to his songs of the On The Road Again album) and producer (f.e. Dr Feelgood, Bryan Ferry,...). There is to add assorted session work, most notably with BRYAN FERRY for the soundtrack of the John Travolta film Phenomenon. Dave also plays a couple of tracks on the album of GARY BARLOW (of Take That). All this is the proof Dave is a man with many musicial talents - plus he is a nice, friendly person with a great sense of humour. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 10:15:08 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Johnny=20Reece?= Subject: Re: [AVALON] Andy Mackay/Eddie Riff >>>--- Simon Galloway wrote: > People have been known never to return from that > shed. I think the biggest problem with '70`s American radio was that the program managers were die hard hippies that just wern`t willing to let go of the Beatles/Doors/Jefferson Airplane etc. They couldn`t relate to the emerging glam/avant-garde movement and shunned it like the plague. I can still remember being told by one DJ, "We don`t play that fag shit." then went on the play some crap like The Night Chicago Died or Seasons in the Sun. But for me it was the age of Progressive Rock and I remember seeing some great shows by King Crimson, Yes, Procol Harum, ELP. It was also a time when I was first discovering Todd Rundgren, the Velvet Underground, Bowie, T.Rex, and of course Roxy Music whose first album was a shot of fresh air. All in all I feel that the early 70's music wise was great except for a very small period where arena rock started and bands just didn't know what to do in a large setting. Bands like Bowie and Alice Cooper solved that by using the large stage for a "show" in addition to the music. The 70's chugged along with those bands I mentioned above releasing some seminal albums that are still classic today after 25 to 28 years!!! Then just as things were starting to get stagnant and the radio became disco (let's face it popular radio has never played what I and probably most of you wants to listen to-it's very rare that you get a song by one of your faves played on the radio-at least here in the USA) PUNK appeared. And living in NYC-and going to CBGBs, Mudd Club, Max's, and Hurrah's right at the beginning was great. Seeing Television, Ramones, Dead Boys, Talking Heads, Heartbreakers etc when they strarted -in clubs with (initially) small audiences (I once saw Blondie/Ramones/Milk n Cookies at CBGB with about 25 people in the audience) was a privilege. Then the UK got into the act and blew us away with the Pistols, Clash, Jam, Wire, Magazine, Buzzcocks, Only Ones, Generation X, Adverts, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Joe Jackson, XTC and far too many more to list. All in all I think that the 70's was an excellent decade music-wise-much better than 80's and head and shoulders above 90's. I think that taken as a whole it might even be a better decade than the 60's -as a ten year block, although the 60's was more revolutionary John ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 12:17:59 -0400 From: jmdillon@mindspring.com Subject: [AVALON] TOTP2 And Historical Nights "Years ago, a beautiful woman once drove me to drink, and till this day I have always been meaning to thank her." Up to that point, my older cousins dictated what music was good (anything NOT play on the radio) and evil (everything else). But even they didn`t get Bowie, Roxy or even ELP/Yes. I think people who came of age in the '70`s are by far the luckiest of the past 3 decades. The different styles of music found throughout the '70`s was just overwhelming and regardless of whatever band you shared with a friend, someone always came upon a group that just blew you away, yet, you still never got around to following that band because at any minuet, another band came along that captured your interest. It seemed to go on and on and you never caught up. But the quality faded quite a bit in the '80`s and really took a dive in the '90`s. IMO, 99.5% of everything released today is total, unimaginative, no talent CRAP!! They started as an almost free form station, most of their ads were PSA's for crying out loud. But they played good music, introduced many cool bands to us, and were pro drug and liberal. The afternoon drive/program director in the last half of the seventies was Kid Leo. He now works for Columbia records. He was a local boy who made good and he actually cared about music, and about Cleveland. In those days Cleveland was a breakout market. A & R guys had to visit Cleveland on a regular basis to find out what was up. Kid Leo loved Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. When a new Roxy album would come out he would play every track on it as if they were hit singles. He also gave heavy play to Ferry's solo albums. When Roxy would come to Clevo, he would have all kinds of pre-show hype on his afternoon show. It was fantastic. He also backed David Johansen in the same way, and to a lesser extent the New York Dolls...Stranded in the Jungle, and Babylon were played frequently, Leo "had it" back then. Check the movie "Almost Famous"...it has all kinds of Clevo references in it. Including WMMS, Scene Magazine, and Swingos. Anyway, there is a whole generation of Clevelanders who know Roxy Music like they know the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin. They were practically our favorite sons. At least Kid Leo followers. Now our commercial radio is the pitts...too many mergers swallowed up any creativity at all. Thank God we still have the excellent college radio like WRUW, WCSB, WUJC, and others. I just wish SFX would schedule a concert (as planned originally) here in clevo, we deserve it, and desire it probably more than any other American city that's for sure. LP Simone Yahoo! Just got in from the TOTP2 recording, and I have to say it was great! They played Virginia Plain, Out Of The Blue, Jealous Guy, Love Is The Drug and Do The Strand and the sound was pure Roxy. Having TGPT back on drums after 20 years really does make an incredible difference, out of all the musicians on that stage he was, without doubt that vital ingredient, the catalyst that makes the Roxy sound complete. His drums were loud and powerful, the force of every hit and beat pounding through your body! As for the others... well, it's fair to say that more rehearsal is definitely required, but the Thompson/Katz rhythm section is unshakable! Being a TV recording there were long gaps between songs, changing equipment, camera angles etc. This did spoil the flow somewhat (it'll all look smooth and seamless after the editing I'm sure) and we did have to endure 3 versions of Jealous Guy (even Ferry got bored) but OOTB was truly magical - Lucy delivered the goods and TGPT was spot on. Before we went into the studio I managed to grab a couple of minutes with Paul, just to say hello and thanks. A really decent guy, but we knew that already! Anyway, I'm tired and I've been stood up for a long time! G'night all! SimonG BTW did I say Paul Thompson was great? A unanimous decision. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 19:05:20 EDT From: ASchulberg@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re; 70's Stuff In a message dated 05/23/2001 5:53:04 PM Eastern Daylight Time, paulclevo@yahoo.com writes: > In Cleveland we were lucky...from 1971 and throughout the 70's WMMS > reigned. The show rocked, great to see TGPT again, OOTB was marvellous and a truly wonderful Strand, with 6 be-feathered dancers! This song should be the single to support the tour! If only all concerts were in such a relaxed situation. Huge studio, 400 people in acres of space - it was like watching them in a half empty pub. Because the camera crews needed plenty of room to manoevre, and strict BBC fire regulations, there was so much space you could pick and choose anywhere to watch. On TV it'll look like the place was packed but in reality they were only 4 people deep at the front. Behind them there were raised platforms to stand on and an empty floor to just wander about on. The only thing missing was the bar! That was outside, and unfortunately out of bounds once the show started - but I'd had my fill already. Ferry looked dapper in black suit, black tie - and black Dye - Reservoir Dogs outfit. Manzanera - similar, but in white, Thompson looks like Nigel during his "who ate all the pies?" period. Him and Mackay ain't missed many meals since 'Manifesto' I can promise you that, and Spedding's had his Grecian 2000 nicked. There was some shaven headed guy in shades playing bass - no idea who that was. Two very youthful blonde babes on percussion and keyboards, and the ubiquitous sexy, black diva helping out on vocals. Recording took about an hour and a half, kicking off with 'Virginia Plain', then 'Out of the Blue' / 'Jealous Guy' / 'Love is the Drug' and 'Do the Strand'. During technical stops Manza, Spedding and Thompson did a brief little blues jam, then they did two more takes of 'Jealous Guy', one for edit options, another for a 'Top of the Pops Extra' broadcast with the reclining glamourpuss femme fatale from the first album cover as a backdrop. Finished off with another take of 'Virginia Plain'. During 'Do the Strand' they were joined on stage by six nubile nymphetes wearing red feather tails and head-dresses that put the Rio carnival to shame. Ferry's parting gesture was "See you on the tour" - I guess he will! It was a fab night out - thanks a lot! Mucho appreciado. I joined the queue at 6.00pm after a quick head count, it was hot and I was dying of thirst, but dreading finding a pub, in case after a quick pint the numbers swelled to danger point. I then glanced across the road and what did I see?...... A PUB... with tables outside - one of them had my name on it. I sat there smugly guzzling my lager counting the numbers in the queue opposite, and catching rays. Could NOT figure out why no-one else sussed the situation - amateurs! I'm hoping the gloves come off when the tour starts, the TV schedule dictated the menu - I'm longing for 'Mother of Pearl' and 'Ladytron', and I hope they unleash Spedding during the set. During the sound checks his opening chords for 'Virginia Plain' were such a raucous tease - I felt like yelling "Let him loose... you BBC bastards..." common decency and a fear of ejection prevented me from pusuing my whim. In the words of John Lennon "... a splendid time was guaranteed for all..." Later - Regards,DM Well i'm drunk today................... ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #190 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
