OK Simon, here is an article from the RM fan club newsletter, Dec/Jan 74-75, re. the RAH gig... "Thursday December 19th, was the memorable day Bryan Ferry met the RAH - and won! Definitely the concert of the year. Would Bryan succeed where others had failed? Would the critics write their reviews before the concert even started? Thus prejudging the most prestigious concert of '74? It was a formidable sight when the Martyn Ford Orchestra walked on in full formal evening dress, followed by the Roxettes past and present, plus a guest player. Stage left was Peter Robinson, standing in front of Eddie Jobson, the incredibly funky John Porter on lead and slide guitars, behind the drum kit was TGPT (complete with BF silhouette on the bass drum), with John Wetton on bass once again experiencing an audience not quite so "cosmically conscious" as those to which he played when with King Crimson. The on the extreme right Roxy's axeman cometh, Philip Targett-Adams (also known as Mr. Manzanera). But each member of the electric band was resplendent in full evening dress, with white tuxedo, red cummer bund, black trousers and black bow ties! (What, Paul in jacket and bow tie!) Then as the lights dimmed, the whole ensemble broke into "Sympathy for the Devil," as our man of the hour strolled on, in midnight blue evening suit and black tie onto the checked platform bedecked with festive foliage. He introduced himself as a man of wealth and taste. We weren't going to argue with that. From then on you just knew it was going to be a good one. The set consisted of selections from Bryan's two solo albums, including the whole of side 2 of "These Foolish Things", plus one song from the notorious "Country Life" album, "A really good time", Some of the highlights were John Porter's guitar work on "Don't worry baby" and "You are my sunshine", Phil's freak out finale on "The in Crowd", and his controlled break on "You won't see me", the sax break by Chris Mercer and the clavinet on "Fingerpoppin'" the sight of the orchestra looking exceedingly straight then suddenly leading us all with claps and clicks during "These Foolish Things" (the encore, the fact that Eddie no introduction other than Bryan pointing to him whilst singing "... a tinkling piano in the next apartment..." and then receiving a warm wave of recognition and applause. We just knew it was him. I wonder if Bryan has set a trend by singing from word sheets - we shall see! During "Hard Rain" he held out the hymn sheet sometimes referring to the words, but most times used it as a prop in the best Ferry tradition. (Another indication of Bryan's manipulation of lyrics for his own effect when he threw away the word sheet on the line "...and i'll know my song well before I start singing..."). Another touch of humour when Bryan looked around the hall and into the dome and said "nice place you've got here". Bryan was far more relaxed and moved assuredly at the Albert Hall than he had done in Birmingham, where he looked nervous and strained. Yes, it was a great night for us all." Written by Pete Leay. Andy Mackay, Eno and Robert Fripp attended this gig and each were "impressed and thought it was well presented." Btw Si, any news on those boots you were doing for me, mate? Now that I kow more about that sort of music, and its role in the daily life of China in the 70's, I can appreciate it more. But it still strikes me as a slim idea for a whole album. It does take a few listens. I got my first copy on a trip to London in '95. I bought the used cassette, and then a used LP. A few years later I got the CD (From Jim Lawn), I traded him an American CD - Chris Isaacs' "Forever Blue". When they finally released all the Andy Mackay signed CDs, I ordered them all. I have a neat frame with Riff, Resolving, Rock Follies, Rock Follies '77 and The Players - Christmas - all signed by Andy. But, my favorite album of all time is "In Search of Eddie Riff", Andy's first solo album. It has some beautiful tracks, and an Andy Mackay number that I always felt would make a great Roxy tune called "Summer Sun". FYI - my beautiful daughter Chloe was born on May 16th. S8^) FWIW, I happen to like 'Resolving Contradictions', mostly for the Chinese-sounding tunes. At its best, it has that happy Japanese knack of unselfconsciously grafting oriental melodies onto a West European pop style, like Ryuichi Sakamoto circa 'Neo Geo' (I'm also a big fan of the Vangelis epic 'China'). Of course, if you don't like oriental music, it may be a bit of an uphill (people's) struggle. Give it lots of plays anyway, is my advice, it may just grow on you. Then, about an hour into the set, a suited flunky came up into our absurdly high teer and invited us down to stage front with the unforgettable incantation "Mr Ferry has asked you to join him downstairs." We spun down and down a thousand stairs and found ourselves, indeed, centre-stage. Towards the end of Foolish Things Bry left the stage, the orchestra sawing away, only to saunter back, St Moritz clapsed twixt those long fingers, bouquets of roses hurled at his feet.
