Just a bit of an informational update to pass along regarding the Roxy Music, Australian Leg of World Tour 2001, cities and dates, etc.. As of this morning an additional stop has been added, a second show for Sydney. This now brings the total of Australian shows to six. They are Brisbane, Sydney (2), Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Additional information now states these dates are now looking to start on or around August 11th, 2001, with actual date and venues still to be confirmed. Ok. Ok. Simon I don't per se have a problem with rap at all, but I do think that Eminem's music has a dubious side. While it might be that I (may) do and you, Simon, petal, do, there's a lot of people out there who might not get the irony. That's what I find depressing about the music. Did you read the Burchill article? She was indicating that the lyrics have a (not very funny) misogynistic side which seem to be acceptable in a way that if Eminem was singing about racially motivated violence would not be. She was careful to say that neither gender motivated violence or racially motivated violence is ok and there is not a hierarchy of one being worse than the other. I was taken with that point and I have to say, that I often find that stuff that is misogyinistic is too often written off as a 'joke' or 'ironic'. Mymain problem with the way she writes is that it is 'me and my pal down the pub think this...' her view might be valid, but that ain't journalism. >So, what about Tony Parsons then? Complacent in middle age or just a >redifining of objectives...? re Tony Parsons (another UK journalist, author and 'social commentator'), I had drafted the last e-mail on this and ended by saying that I like him a lot (blush). I then changed it. I have to say that I find him very engaging even when he used to make the odd bloomer on 'Late Review'. He's funny and although he can be populist, he's not self-referential as much as she is. Thus given that he and she had a dreadful post-divorce relationship, the fact that I can be ok about her (albeit occasionally) shows she must argue well occasionally. So Si, are we still pals? The best seats at Chastain are six-to-a-table "table seats," where locals usually bring dinners, candelabras, wine, etc. Then behind those you have the proper auditorium-style seats, and then behind and above those you have a grassy hill where you can spread out a blanket and bring a picnic dinner. The tables are not sold for individual shows. You have to buy a season or a half-season subscription to a number of concerts to get one. The cost among scalpers is five to six times face value. That said, Chastain has announced the second half of the summer concert series. There's a big ad in Creative Loafing this week. Roxy ain't on it. No, but it's even closer for me and a little closer for Gene (three hours instead of four?). If Atlanta falls through, it makes sense, since we have an SFX-owned amphitheater (the AmSouth Amphitheater at Starwood, formerly known as the First American Music Center, formerly known as Starwood). But Atlanta's four or five times bigger than Nashville and more likely to draw a sizable crowd, so it doesn't look like a good business decision. The likely Roxy crowd would fit better in Municipal Auditorium (capacity: 9,000) than at Starwood (18,000) or the Arena (12,000 - 15,000 depending on the seating configuration), but given Roxy/Ferry's fondness for Outdoor Shed Life, I'd guess Starwood. The downside: our Amphitheater has sucky acoustics, and isn't nearly as nice a setting as Chastain Park (or my favorite, Blossom, which is just outside Cleveland). Bottom line: I just want a show I can go to, dammit! considering L.A. or Chicago travel plans, skimpy 2001 vacation time be damned, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 15:53:55 +0100 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Boots of Horoscope Hi Len, I expect if you just jangle a little loose change in you pocket, one of Avalon's new breed of free-market entrepreneurs will come along to attend to your 'unique sales opportunity'...or at least selflessly vouch for the 'honesty' of a friend who can 'help'. The Grauniad really did drop the letter "o" from the word count, you can only take my word for it. No, I cannot prove it (if I had kept every howler from the paper I would not be able to move for newsprint) but I remember that it was a story during the Falklands (Malvinos to our Spanish freinds) fiasco. You know the "nutter on the bus syndrome" well I was on the train (no, no mobile phone in those days) and I never forget trying to stifle the laughter. The originality of "Grauniad" being coined from their own mistake can be proved. I think it was Peter Preston (ex editor) from the paper who, about 3-4 years ago, wrote an article in one edition on the whole history of Guardian printed errors and related cock-ups. Nigel. A while ago someone was asking about Roxy related landmarks in London. Well, I was looking at my bookshelves a few minutes ago and found "The Handbook Guide To Rock And Pop: London" which I had completely forgotten I had! Anyway, Roxy get one entry, and here it is in full: <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Where: 201 Piccadilly Who: ROXY MUSIC When: 1 March 1972 The group9s debut album 3Roxy Music2 was recorded here. Further albums were also recorded at the studios. The motorbike sound at the beginning of Virginia Plain was recorded from a bike riding up and down Piccadilly. The song was Roxy Music9s first single and established them as a leading art-rock band. Bryan Ferry was the singer and songwriter and he named the group after his favourite cinema, the Roxy in Brixton. Ferry attended art school in Newcastle before teaching pottery at St. Paul9s School for Girls in Hammersmith. He held a couple of art exhibitions, one at the Piccadilly Gallery, 16a Cork Street, near the studios, before opting for a musical career. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> So there you have it! More old questions to be answered soon... Another old question, can't remember when from, but anyway... Some people were very lucky to have witnessed Bryan's solo shows of 1974 which were at the Royal Albert Hall and Newcastle City Hall (I am led to believe) complete with an orchestra. I recently acquired a very poor audience recording of the Newcastle show. It's so poor that it's hard to make out what songs are being performed. Luckily it was accompanied by a set list. Here goes: Sympathy For The Devil I Love How You Love Me Baby I Don't care It's My Party Help Me Make It Through The Night Don't Worry Baby Another Time Another Place Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever You Are My Sunshine Fingerpoppin' The Tracks Of My Tears You Won't See Me Smoke Gets In Your Eyes A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Funny How Time Slips Away A Really Good Time The In Crowd These Foolish Things The RAH show was professionally recorded and it would be a real treat to hear it one day. So, who out of you lot were there then? I'm curious to know who was in the band. Any info anyone?
