I enjoyed reading all the comments from Therese,Simon and Jocelyn (but then again I always do!) I count myself as being really lucky to have been involved in the Birmingham scene(anyone else out there?). As a seventeen year old (yes, we loved Trash!) We went to the Rumrunner two nights a week and also a place called the Holy city zoo (which was co-owned by Paul Henry -AKA Benny from Crossroads 'Yes Miss Diane' and Andy gray.)I actually gave up clubbing at about the age of 20 as the nights stopped and jazz funk took over, but we had a ball! It was mainly Bowie, Ferry Roxy, T.Rex, Ronson,Reed and about 30 other artists which often come up on this list BTW. Us girls wore clothes from the 20's 30's 40's and 50s, I also tried to look like a siren, but never quite pulled it off, although one bloke did once refer to us as' Oh yeah, them, they're the Roxy girls.' On hearing this we coolly slinked off to the loos where we screamed and my mate put her stiletto heel into my foot( true, it fecking killed me !) We also wore Suzi wong dresses(great for Tokyo Joe!) and Bowie trousers of course- circa BKS- Lodger) Nick Rhodes often took over the decks , he is a genuine, self-effacing kind of guy and was a huge Roxy fan . One night he even played the full nine and a bit minutes of ' The Bogus Man' and many a night would blast out ' Prairie Rose '. Those really were the days my friends , we knew they had to end..... but it was great to show our boys the scene we were into. We're still a huge embarrassement to them though! Unlike Simon G. I like Sade very much. They ( it's the name of a group, not just a single woman) developed a sound - soul with a jazz tinge - which led critics in the eighties to accuse them of making pseudo-jazz ( at a time when the FACE was at its height of influence and everyone was pretending they were into Bessie Smith), which they simply weren't trying to do. Sade herself has spoken about how the term 'sophisticated' was wrongly applied to them, that their music was, is, consciously very simple. For me, the simplicity and the clarity of their work nearly always sounds fresh. The first album has dated a little, (but I'm still very fond of it,) and Sade herself has a doubtful sense of pitch, but there are very few artists in pop who have made five albums, each unfailingly better than the last. And if they get slagged off for being too too boutiquey, some of the material in reality is surprisingly muscular. I remember Gambacini wingeing on about their music having no emotional content, but from WHEN AM I GONNA MAKE A LIVING to the beautiful SLAVE SONG on the new album, there are many wonderfully moving moments, and a genuine political sensibility to boot. But this digression has a Roxy conclusion. I saw in last Sunday's NY Times that Sade has sold out Madison Square and put on a second date . Not the theatre, the arena! The music isn't utterly dissimilar to Roxy/Ferry of the last twenty years, and yet Roxy can only muster enough people for the little theatre. Strange. I won't be going to see Sade. Much as I like them, I can't imagine that music working in a venue of arena size. Spedding. My second favorite guitarist, and I'll get to see them both together again! I also saw Spedding the the Bottom Line show. The highlight for me was Manzanera and Spedding playing their guitar necks together - what a sound. Spedding also played with Robert Gordon as Roxy's support act at several venues on the Manifesto tour. He outplayed Gordon, and I was rather disappointed that he didn't come out to guest with Roxy. Other times I've seen Spedding have been at Trax with Busta Jones and Irving Plaza in NYC, the (old) 9:30 Club in DC, and the aptly named 8 x 10 Club in Baltimore, where he had an incredibly screaming yellow Flying V. His work with Ferry is fabulous, and (it's only my opinion here) there's not much that compares to his playing on Eno's "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch" and Joan Armatrading's "Me, Myself, I."
