He's on the radio every day in London, for three hours! 2. He is a self-important, over-opinionated type. 3. He is rarely able to accept someone elses point of view - he is always right. 4. He plays some really crap records. 5. He's responsible for discovering Sade (and I'll take the flames on that one). 6. (Supposed) style over substance. On the other hand, he plays at least one Bowie track a week and last year he questioned a line from Young Americans (misheard lyrics type thing) so I emailed him the lyrics, and a few days later the whole subject escalated and Bowie got in touch to explain what he was on about! He also regularly plays Roxy. And he can be quite an entertaining broadcaster (in moderation) so long as he isn't on the telly. > BTW Loved your story re Phil Oakey - did you watch Channel 4's Top Ten > Electronic Bands when they talked about the schism between Heaven 17 and > Human League - handbags and eyeshadow at dawn I'll tell you. Susan's parents live opposite my girlfriend's mum, Phil used to live round the corner from me and one of the girls briefly went out with my brother! They met at the Crazy Daisy (London Road) where they used to have a Roxy/Bowie night. Well, just before Pulp hit the big time they could still be seen wandering round town most days of the week. One of my mates knew Jarvis (from sharing rehearsal rooms) and we bumped into him outside Boots on Fargate (just for those who know Sheffield and want a clear mental picture). He was rather proud of his latest charity shop purchase - a pair of black and white shoes! I remarked how I would never wear someone elses shoes, not even a relatives never mind a complete stranger. However, for whatever reason I don't feel they have got their due critical acclaim. Their albums with the possible exceptions IMHO of Siren Manifesto and F&B led others to copy. Their sense of style and the mix of art and music and the choice of instrumentation played a key role of punk, new romanticism, cool and experimentation. This tour has the opportunity to put that right. The news that it would be just Roxy material, the choice of TGPT and the 'feel' of the complete line-up, gives me the impression that this is their chance to cement their rightful place in rock history. I hope......and I don't believe.........they will blow it. Come on boys (and girls) show the world what you can do and what we've all been missing. I can't wait Cheers Richard ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 May 2001 19:33:04 -0000 From: "Andrew Shearer" Subject: [AVALON] Fwd: NEWS FROM PHIL MANZANERA AND THE TEAM AT EXPRESSION RECORDS Just received this from the Manzenera website... > >Hello again, > >We are pleased to be able to announce the full Roxy Music line-up that will >be touring the world this summer. > >Altogether, there are ten musicians in the band. Very glad Chris Spedding is on board. We depend on Mr. Good for most fabulous arrangements. And I was mesmirized by both Lucy and Julia at ATGB concert. Best of all, Reecey will be uncontrollable over Julia and he may well grace us again with a series of delightful concert reviews and related comments. But who is Sarah Brown? She must be exceptional to be selected by this group of perfectionists! Regards, maggie and Julia.
