Where, when? - --------------------------- A few cool and quiet mornings ago while driving my YJ, I dropped The Ultimate Collection into the deck. Not having rewound the tape, it played where left off the last time I listened to it, and "This Is Tomorrow Callin'" was on. I thought, if this is a Roxy Music song, it would be a good first song to start some shows on their upcoming tour. Listen to it - nice vocals, nice sax, nice guitar work, raucous drums - overall the piece is positively arousing. But then, it could have been the cool and quiet morning and a particular state of mind which made this song sound so extraordinarily good just then. I hear you Gene - I've been to movie houses fewer than five times since the mid 80's. As a child, my Mom would give me and my siblings fifty cents each to go to the Saturday matinee at "The Cozy" Theater, an art deco, spacious, luxurious, ultra cool (air-conditioned) palace. Twenty-five cents to buy admission to an afternoon of entertainment, remember the serials? The remaining twenty-five cents to spend on concessions. We loved sitting in the first row of the balcony, and making our empty Milk Duds boxes into whistles. Licorice, Junior Mints, hot buttered (real butter) popcorn, sodas, but no gum - we were wild little animals back then, guess The Cozy didn't need gum stuck all over the place. The Drive-In was a weekly summer delight. Dusk to dawn were special treats - don't recall staying awake for all the features. Playground before settling into the show, coiled mosquito repellent burning on the dash, speaker hanging inside the window, corn dogs with mustard, row upon rows of cars in the dark, and Fourth of July fireworks display. Pure nostalgia. Nearly gone, but not forgotten. A friend was touring with roxy and that was our in. the problem was that the rest of the band was kind of what's the word-making fun of ferry and his self-importance at the time. I only saw what i wanted to see and that was someone who was portrayed as aloof-ego-centric-vain and very dramatic. I only saw his persona-and I guess he responded in kind-let's just say he did not disappoint me. Years and years later i met him again and reminded him of my friend who toured with him (as a bass player) and he was gracious, elegant, polite and well-he was what I though he would be at that point in his career and he didn't disappoint. Both the first 2 Roxy and first 2 VU albums were so way ahead of their time that perhaps they will never sound outdated. Tthese records were made in VU's case almost 34 years ago!!! All I have to do is think that when I was 17 (in 1973) listening to this stuff-if I was to listen to something recorded in 1939 (34 years previous)-it would be like listening to some ancient prehistoric music. So, has anyone actually got their tickets for the TOTP2 special yet? I too received the unwelcome email on Friday, how my heart sank! And did anyone actually get an email saying "yes, you've got them well done"? I did apply for them by phone too so here's hoping. But what will they perform, and how many people will buy TGPT a drink? I think they'll do VP, Street Life, LITD, Dance Away and Avalon (maybe MTT if they're attempting it) to show the range of what will be covered on the tour, and keeping it to Greatest Hits for maximum TV impact and cd promotion. From the archive I reckon they'll have Ladytron and Strand (both OGWT), and old TOTP performances of Oh Yeah and MTT with maybe a Ferry clip tossed in for good measure. They will probably do more "new" songs than will be included in the programme and show them at a later date, they always do for these type of programmes. Having looked at the BBC schedules, TOTP2 airs on BBC2 on a Wednesday and Saturday, and on BBC Choice (digital) just about every day! So plenty of chances to see it. I used to watch it every week back in days of Johnny Walker, but since that smug ba*tard Steve Wright took over I only watch if I know there's definitely something I want to see. So I guess 6 June at the earliest (or possibly 30 May, with the repeat on 2 June?). I'm sure someone will post details nearer the time. And, no, I haven't got a ticket yet (but I haven't been told "no" either, so I'm still hoping....) Bryan Ferry and "his" (ahem) great band. Though I spose by 79 it was more Bryan's band than anything else. Still to me what makes Roxy great isnt just Bryan but the mixture of the different parts. In other words Roxy is no more Bryan than it is Phil or Andy or TGPT or Eno/Jobson etc... artist shop also has the following: ROXY MUSIC-VINTAGE $18.95 Follow-up to the highly successful 'Valentine' compilation. Previously unreleased live performances from the German Beat club Workshops of the mid-seventies. Tracks include, 'Out Of The Blue' (1975), 'Psalm' (1974), 'A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall' (1975), 'If It Takes All Night' (1975) and 'Editions Of You' (1973). >--- Original Message --- >From: David Firmin >To: >Date: 5/8/01 12:44:08 PM > >I just received their new catalog and it lists a Roxy CD. Quite why anyone would want this fat balding middle-aged webmaster to serenade them is beyond me, but hey, it is a four month anniversary (is that ruby or diamond...?) so anyway here goes... 'Name removed and name removed, this one's for you...'Yesterday, well it seemed so cool....' Chris BTW, this is the THIRD request for a dedication I have received this week...true! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 00:19:31 -0400 From: "therese" Subject: [AVALON] Blitzed by the new romance Hello there. Late night telly watching and I saw a programme ont eh New Romantic era. It was good, esp. Boy George who I think is one of the most intelligent commentators from the popular culture world. Anyway, it seemed to be a bit of a Bowie love-in with Roxy getting only one mention and that coming from Gary Kemp. *Sigh* it just don't seem right! And contrary to recent concerns as to how RM fans may appear on the aesthetic front on TOTP2, let me tell you any of us would look as good if not better than the Blitz crowd in 1980. I'd pay good money to see some of you male subscribers who think you're BF put on make-up and trip around on, as Marilyn put it, 5 inch stilettos with a Steve Strange shawl on. Come to think of it, if some of you think that's a way to get into TOTP2 in the light of recent tix disappointments there might be a rush on said fashion accoutrements. Happy plastering and that ain't a ref to DIY. Must hop as am about to fade to grey otherwise. BTW Were any of you working in a cocktail bar when I met you?
