I'm with Ida on this one. No idea of the actual stats, but when I was in the US in 1989, my hosts were clear on the point; Drive-Ins were a disappearing feature of the landscape. I drove from NYC to LA on a "driveaway" with my 2 US friends -- sounds like a TWOC caper, but it's actually delivering the car of someone who's moved from one coast to the other. We had a week to get from East to West, so not much time for sightseeing, but we would've made time for a drive-in on the way if we'd seen one! In fact we drove past a few "dead" ones on the way. All 3 of us wanted to experience this piece of American culture while we still could, but it had to wait til the LA end of the trip. Even then there was only one theatre anywhere near North Hollywood, where we were staying. So we went to see a really crappy film just to get the Drive-In Experience! (Or part of it; no snogging or nookie took place, but there were hot dogs and a big yellow thing to hang on the car door where the sound came from.) Obviously from this correspondence there are still some left in some places, which I find obscurely reassuring. The drive-in movie theaters of America are disappearing! Maybe they still exist in rural America, but all the ones around where I grew up in New Jersey, are gone. The ones that were in Southern California when I moved here in 1982, are now swap meet locations. I think there are very, very few left in SoCal, if any. How many of us "learned alot" at drive-in movie theaters in high school?! Ah, sweet youth! There used to be scores of them in western Pennsylvania, with double or triple features, wonderful previews of coming attractions, sometimes cartoons, too. They all had really funky concession stands and you saw folks in every manner of dress, including kids in pajamas. Some drive-ins even had playgrounds for the kids to use until it got dark enough to start the show. By the '70's they had begun to shut down and their were a few left, mostly showing porno. There may still be a few scattered about but they are mostly paved over and developed for a Wal-Mart or Lowe's. Drive-Ins were a regular family outing for us as well. Alfred Hitchcock`s "The Birds" was the first movie I remember seeing at a drive-in. Throughout the '70`s they were the ultimate date destination or just pile all of your degenerate friends in for the weekend skin-flicks for $5 a carload. Sadly, they were all gone by the mid '80s. I`m told there are still two operating in this area (E. Tn.) but they only open to host nostalgia events like classic car rod runs and the like. An individual bought a old Drive In just to preserve the nostalgic so the new generation could see what it's like to attend one. Also Dallas is good about keeping old movie houses. If not for movies then they'll be used for concerts because the setting is so right. We have such one in downtown , the old Majestic because of all its grandeur of spiralling stairway , fountains, balcony, even the box seating on the sides in the balcony. There is not a bad seat in this place. They used to have a organ that would rise up from the floor & this was the music that was used when it was a movie house.---- Dallas is very good about preserving history. Come here you;ll find old communities, that is the historical district where houses have to be kept up like they were. You can;t change the exterior at all. You can buy to fix & preserve it to the original design . These are protected by the city as landmarks. Some of your suburbs have the old downtowns as antique shops just as they were, One such place the old opera house ,is being restored from pictures of it with all its orgininal history intact. There is history in these places. & thanks to historians they will not be bulldozed down to make way for concrete monsters. Some of these old areas; such as a place known as the M. streets. There are at least two in Georgia: one about ten miles north of Athens, and one in mountainous, intensely rural Ellijay which shows whatever feature it can get its hands on. I am informed by my college brother, whose parents live in Ellijay, that the sole and lone function of that drive-in is to give teens a place to make out. "Power corrupts. It seems that like the traditional movie theatre the Drive In has suffered from the arrival of the modern multi screen cinema complexes that have sprung up in recent years. I for one have fond memories of real cinemas with big screens rather than what sums up as a large room in a complex where you can usually hear part of the sound from another movie during the quietest scenes of the one that I had gone to see. Here's to the movie theatre and Drive In, enjoy them while you can, you may not have them for much longer. Well, sure -- it's just not possible to "compete" when limited by climate, time of nightfall and the rising values of proximity-to-population real estate. Fortunately, there are still hobbyists and nostalgists who aren't operating for purely economic aspects, and the nasty decline of the '80s seems to have (mostly) leveled off: http://www.driveintheater.com -wfs ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 12:10:14 -0400 From: jmdillon@mindspring.com Subject: [AVALON] This is tomorrow callin' Hello All & Good Afternoon On:Monday, May 07, 2001 11:32 AM David Firmin wrote: Rehearsals start tomorrow. From what I understand, our boys have picked 35 original "ROXY Music" songs to rehearse. They will then cull the concert "set list" from this group. For those who are attending more then one show: A Treat! The sets will vary slightly from night to night. The good news is that, at least around where I live, those wonderful old theaters are getting second lives. The Uptown Theater, about which I suspect Mr. Sommers could share a few tales of, uh, youthful hijinks shall we say, got a wonderful face lift a few years back, including new seats and a new screen (curved just like the old one). you can find me front row of the balcony, center, please. And the old theater in Silver Spring, Maryland, just over the DC border, is being completely refurbished to provide a new home for the American Film Institute. So the old movie palaces which gave Roxy their name (and bring this thread back on topic!), are still breathing.
