But consider this, I prefer Heinz over Hunts and I depend on Heinz to ensure an adequate supply of it's product, at a convenient location, at a reasonable cost with quality assurance. No doubt, Heinz is ever interested in attracting new customers while retaining current ones, so it is reasonable that Heinz would conduct surveys, refine their product, provide incentives to the public enticing purchase of their product... Should I purchase Heinz and find the bottle has been tampered with, I return it to the store for a cheerful refund. I also expect that Heinz would like to know of the tampering - in case some nutter has tainted the product. If that proves to be the case, I fully expect Heinz to actively pursue any and all remedies to ensure this tampering does not happen again. I also expect Heinz to hastily remove product from shelves and publicize a recall if any batch was determined to be substandard in quality...... My position, given the above example, is , yes, I buy the ketchup, but I also am purchasing customer service on many different levels. Following that model, we consume branded Bryan Ferry music AND are not unreasonable in expecting friendly consumer service in accompaniment. < I think there's a huge difference, and not just a technical one, between royalty (at least in the UK), clergy, government officials, etc., being paid by their constituents and pop stars making money from their audiences. And Mr. Ferry does sign autographs, talk to people who come back stage, etc. So I think he does indeed acknowledge these things. > Yet, the simplest thing, with the furthest reach of good will to his consumers, Mr. Ferry fails to do. That is, to not deny the existence of Avalon List (is there danger in saying "yes, I am aware of Avalon List"?), and to acknowledge the fact there is a Roxy Music tribute band (is there fear in losing market share if Remake Remodel's existence is recognized and admitted?). < But the marketing of Mr. Ferry isn't the same thing as Mr. Ferry. > That is correct, as I previously stated. The marketing of Bryan Ferry is essential to the marketing of his music. Anytime Bryan Ferry steps into the public arena to ply his trade, he is thee product. There is no personal or private Bryan Ferry when he is at work. Sorry that sounds so cold, but it is fundamentally true. ('One public face in a private limousine.... No secret life, there's no secret you can steal') Naturally, I would be respectful of his privacy should I ever encounter Mr. Ferry in public. But he cannot expect to be treated as anything other than celebrity from anyone he encounters in public. As a consumer, I would express my gratefulness for his music, and I would wish him well in all respects. As a fan, I'd have to reign myself in a bit since I'd love to spend time with him - but that is unreasonable, I recognize that and I would have no choice but to maintain my distance. Somehow, I suspect Mr. Ferry's distance to his fans is maintained for different reasons. < but the fact I've spent X dollars on their output doesn't entitle me to anything. > Colleen, I hope you don't think that is what I think or that is what I have put forth as my argument. I guess I just don't subscribe to The Ketchup/Catsup Model. Music is art. It can't be quality controlled and there is no customer service component. I do expect the CD or LP to play without errors, and I expect the clerk to ring it up correctly (that's about all you can expect with customer service being what it is today in the US). >< audiences. Maybe Mr. Ferry is quite aware of both entities, is horrified by both of them, and prefers to simply play dumb rather than utter a rude remark? Only my second posting to the board ... having trouble connecting with my 'ol mate, Reecey ... (experiencing internet connection problems?) ... perhaps you can help? Deb and I are interested in the imminent US tour situation and we are a bit out of the loop on info.
