Because it's been ages since the last CD tree, and because I want to encourage other people to do one, I'm going to kickstart one this week, and hope it goes well. The CD is a Roxy Music show from Boston, Feb. 1975. On double vinyl, it was passed around under the title "Bittersweet," but since there is a better known CD boot by that name, I've made new artwork for this show with the name BOSTON POP, which I will distribute to people on the tree. The sound quality's probably around a 7 of 10. The mic wasn't right up next to screaming yahoos, but the band is slightly muffled at times. Since I'm neither willing nor able to make copies indefinitely, I will only be doing ten, with the caveat that at least five people who take this disc will then offer at least a few copies as well. That way, we can do this most like a proper tree. If you'd like a copy, then just E-mail me directly at gmslegion@hotmail.com. Please watch your reply-to and don't send back to the list. Indicate whether you're willing to make copies. Once I have ten names and at least five of them are people who will also make copies, then I will e-mail Avalon again to say it's closed. I'll then e-mail my ten with further details and the artwork. One other note before you write: you must be willing to actually send me your disc (80 min.) and a self-addressed stamped envelope for my wife to turn these around quickly and painlessly. Please buy good discs (Mitsui, Kodak, TDK) so your show will last; some of my Ferry shows were recorded for me on bad discs and are skipping. (So does anyone have a complete Glasgow September '82 [aka "Words of Sand" on Firefly Records] that they wanna trade?) Have a great day! "I will not turn into a snake. It never helps." I knew what it was when I saw the envelope, but it was still rather an unreal experience to open the envelope, take out the ticket, and look at the words "Roxy Music" on it. Two words I thought I'd never see on a concert ticket! So, it's starting to seem a bit more real to me, even tho it's still over two months off. But it's certainly something to look forward to. Regarding the proposed betting pool on what Roxy uses for an opening number, how will you handle it if they use a different opening number at different concerts? From their press release, it sounds like the set list might vary considerable from night to night. And as for the opening act, here's my dream: no opening act, and three solid hours of Roxy Music! Granted that's unlikely, from what I've heard of previous tours, but wouldn't that be awesome? You'd get a lot more of those must-hear songs than if they only play an hour and a half. Well, who knows, they seem to have responded to all the support for Paul Thompson; maybe they'll realize how hungry everyone is to hear these songs, and really dish up a lot of them. We can always hope! I'm also hoping they have Eddie Jobson. Eno was basically promoting his new album, which he called "modern chamber music". He said it is a "very composed" album, and he was "making the kind of music I want to hear, because no-one else is". The BBC man said it was very similar to the kind of mixes club DJs are doing in "chill-out rooms" all over the UK. I didn't hear Eno respond to that point, so perhaps it wasn't actually put to him. The intro stressed Eno's role as innovator ("It's in your mind and blood/I watch it simmer"!) and said he'd helped to invent rap by using samples. They seemed to be putting up My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts as a precursor of rap. This point they obviously did put to Eno, because he modestly said that he couldn't really claim to have had anything to do with originating rap, but he would like to be able to claim a bit of credit because it's one of the really "living" areas of music, or somesuch. I had to miss the end because I was just driving up to the workplace, but yes, the interview was a very pleasant satrt to the weekly grind!
