That sounds interesting. Do you remember seeing any Eno tracks other than the two on the album? I just finished giving that June 1 1974 thing another listen (like, after 10+ years) and my conclusions are the same....a real snooze-fest and Nico`s The End is 9 minuets of wanton torture. I bought it for the live Eno tracks and even they seem dull. Not to take anything away from the other musicians on the album, and an impressive line up it is, Fripp and/or Spedding may have saved this show, Manzanera certainly would have. Of course she was talking about Joey Ramone who along with GE Smith and that Pogues guy made up an All-Star Ugly Band. Of course he was also a Ramone and I loved them. They were one of the most fun bands I've ever heard and they were a breath of fresh air when they appeared-and let's face it-they can certainly claim the title of the "creators of punk" as much as anyone. Ramones memories: The first time I saw them at CBGBs playing with Blondie and (I think) the Shirts. The club was mostly empty-I had never heard of them (no one had)-and they just ripped into their songs with Dee Dee counting off each intro: 1-2-3-4...We couldn't believe it-we thought it was a joke. They never stopped in between songs-at first all the songs sounded the same-they looked "unique" and the aforementioned Joey was the ugliest lead singer we had ever seen-we all fell in love immediately. Going to see Rock and Roll High School the day it came out at the Greenwich Theater on 8th St in NYC (doesn't exist anymore) and the whole audience was on its feet-singing, dancing, just like the audiences at Rocky Horror (so I've heard as I've never seen Rocky Horror-and want to keep it that way). It was one of those great cinematic experiences. Bye Bye Joey ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 08:38:07 -0400 From: Heather James Subject: [AVALON] Off Topic - Joey Ramone Dead at 49 Punk Rocker Joey Ramone Dead at 49 By LARRY McSHANE ..c The Associated Press NEW YORK (April 15) - Singer Joey Ramone, the punk rock icon whose signature yelp melded with the Ramones' three-chord thrash to launch an explosion of bands like the Clash and the Sex Pistols, died Sunday. He was 49. Ramone, the gangly lead singer with the leather jacket, tinted glasses and permanently-torn jeans, was hospitalized in March 2001 with lymphoma. His death was confirmed Sunday by Arturo Vega, the Ramone's longtime artistic director. The Ramones - its four members adopted the common last name after forming the band in 1974 - came out of Queens, a motley collection of local losers with limited musical skills. Joey became the lead singer only after his drumming proved too rudimentary to keep up with his bandmates' thunderous riffs. While British bands such as the Sex Pistols and Clash received the media attention once punk rock exploded, both were schooled by the Ramones' tour of England that began on the U.S. Bicentennial - July 4, 1976. ''They changed the world of music. They rescued rock and roll from pretentiousness and unnecessary adornments,'' said Vega. Their ''do-it-yourself,'' garage-rock influence still echoes today in bands like Green Day and the Offspring. The low-tech Ramones spent just two days and $6,000 recording their 1976 debut album. ''They're the daddy punk group of all time,'' said Joe Strummer, lead singer of the Clash, in a recent Spin magazine interview. Despite their influence and critical acclaim, the Ramones never cracked the Top 40. Bruce Springsteen, after seeing the Ramones in an Asbury Park, N.J., club, wrote ''Hungry Heart'' for the band - but his manager convinced The Boss to keep the eventual hit single. The Ramones' best-known songs reflected their twisted teen years in Queens: ''Beat on the Brat,'' ''I Wanna Be Sedated,'' ''Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue,'' ''Teenage Lobotomy,'' ''Sheena Is a Punk Rocker.'' Joey Ramone was born Jeffrey Hyman on May 19, 1951. His career started during the early 1970s glam-rock era, when he played in several New York bands - occasionally under the name Jeff Starship. But his collaboration with Dee Dee, Johnny and Tommy Ramone was something special. They became fixtures in downtown clubs like CBGBs and Max's Kansas City, joining fellow punkers like Patti Smith and Richard Hell. The scene eventually produced commercially successful bands like Blondie and the Talking Heads. The Ramones recorded their first album of two-minute, three-chord blasts in February 1976. The band then earned a loyal cult following with a seemingly endless string of tours where they would crank out 30 songs in 90 minutes. In 1979, Joey and the band appeared in the Roger Corman movie ''Rock N' Roll High School,'' contributing the title song to the soundtrack. They also did the title track for the film ''Pet Semetary,'' based on the book by Ramones fan Stephen King. Their last real stab at commercial success came in a bizarre 1980 collaboration with producer Phil Spector - a session that bassist Dee Dee Ramone recalled most for Spector's pulling a gun on the band inside his Beverly Hills mansion. Joey eventually wound up singing a syrupy version of Spector's classic ''Baby, I Love You'' - the strangest recording of the band's 22-year career. The Spector-produced ''End of the Century'' did become the Ramones' best-selling record, hitting No. 44 on the charts. Five years later, the band released ''Bonzo Goes to Bitburg'' - Joey Ramone's angry rant about President Reagan's visit to a German military cemetery. The Ramones disbanded in 1996 after a tour that followed their final studio album, ''Adios Amigos.'' A live farewell tour album, ''We're Outta Here!'', was released in 1997. Since the band's demise, Joey Ramone kept a fairly low profile - occasionally popping up to perform or host shows at Manhattan clubs, making occasional radio show appearances, and working on a solo album that was never released. > > > ___________________________________________________________________________ > The subliminable footer says: > To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: > unsubscribe avalon - -- -= )-(eather =- >--------------------< hjames@thewebgal.com TheWebGal Domain: http://www.thewebgal.com/hjames/ My Roxy Music Pages: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ >--------------------------------------------------------< ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 14:31:07 +0100 From: Bahi Para Subject: [AVALON] Spedding speaks To exceprts from an online interview with Chris Spedding. He names his Ferry sessions as being among his favourite, echoing comments made by Guy Pratt (main bassist during the Bete Noire & Horoscope sessions) some years back. AU: You've played just about every style of music with your session stuff. Do you have a favorite genre that you find yourself leaning towards in your session work? Chris: Well, in my session work, no. I play what they hire me to do, but it tends to be what people know me for these days. There was a time when I'd be called to do every work-a-day thing, which is how I became a session player, I suppose. I'd learn from the people I was working with like John Cale, who opened me up to a certain type of music that I'd never been exposed to before. People like Bryan Ferry were very pop and I learned a lot about pop music from him and Micky Most. [...] AU: What's been your favorite session? Chris: I have a fond recollection of the things I've done with Bryan Ferry. He had a good technique of getting spontaneity out of me. In the studio, I'd come up with all these ideas and maybe getting in his way as he was trying to get the track down. So one morning, I got a call from his manager saying, "Don't come in tomorrow morning. Wait until we call you," and I thought they'd fired me off the project because I was putting my two cents in. However, in actual fact, Bryan was smart enough to get me to come in after they've spent time working the song out to just put my guitar down after the first time I'd heard the song, because he knew that the way that I worked was very spontaneous." The front man asked Toyah if she was friendly with other rock stars and socialised with them at all. She said that one Sunday afternoon she was trying on a new stage outfit, which consisted of a black leather bra top, mini skirt and thigh length boots when the door bell rang. She answered it and it was Bryan Ferry! She went on to say that he was very embarassed and asked if her husband was at home (which he wasn't- he, being Robert Fripp).Toyah proceeded to invite our man in for tea. She served him tea still dressed in said outfit!! BTW Midge Ure said that he was a big Bowie and Roxy fan and would have liked to cover some of their songs. It,s Alive is my favourite live album of all time(yes including Viva) "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" &" I'm Gonna Kill That Girl" were what the Ramones were about, although if you mention their name to most people in the UK they say"Baby I Love You" which unbelievably was their biggest hit over here, what was Spector thinking of? Jad I'm as jealous as hell that you saw them at cbgb's with the Shirts as well!(whatever happened to them?)
