Lord Byron et al. Dear KB Porter, Thanks for your friendly words! I'd love to participate in a discussion about Spin Me Round, but er... didn't you have another thread open? ...... Lord Byron is still waiting for us! And some others too... In your post of March 5th, you wondered whether BF ever studied Lord Byron's work, and you gave us the link http://www.byronmania.com. This web site contains a wealth of information about Lord Byron. I've consulted it and my Encarta encyclopedia as well, and I found quite some similarities between Lord Byron and BF. - --- Lord Byron lived 1788-1824, during the age of Romanticism. Webster's describes Romanticism as "In the late 18th century and the 19th, a social and esthetic movement [...] that sought to free the individual from unpleasant realities by appealing to his aspirations for wonder and mystery. It emphasized a love for strange beauty, for the past and the far-away, and for the wild, irregular, or grotesque in nature, and found creative expression in [...] lyricism, reverie, sentimentalism, mysticism, and individualism". - Do we recognize our hero? - --- One of Lord Byron's poems, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, is about a melancholy young man, in fact the alter ego of the poet, who, after living a life of licentiousness, searches for peace by contemplating about the past during travelling abroad. - Isn't this very similar to BF's situation in ASFE? - --- Another poem is Fare Thee Well, a goodbye-poem after divorcing. - Wasn't The Bride Stripped Bare created in the same circumstances? - --- Lord Byron's masterpiece is Don Juan, in a style that is a mixture of seriousness and humour. - Characteristics of BF's style as well. And see the title: another Casanova? - --- Lord Byron was handsome and very attractive. It has been documented that he slept with at least 300 women; he was extremely obsessed. - What do we deduce from BF's works? Lord Byron had many admirers. One of them was the famous German poet and novelist Johann Wolfgang Goethe. You may find excellent information about Goethe at http://worldroots.com/brigitte/goethe1.htm. - --- Goethe, living 1749-1832, wrote Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (The sorrows of young Werther). In this novel, Goethe introduced the idea of 'Weltschmerz'. It's a novel full of introspectiveness, spleen, world-weariness and despair. - In BF's works we may find examples of the same introspectiveness (In Your Mind [the song]), spleen (Sea Breezes, Strictly Confidential, Spin Me Round), world-weariness (End Of The Line, Boys And Girls [the song], New Town), and despair (Which Way To Turn). - --- Goethe's masterpiece is Faust, a novel about a man who sold his soul to the devil, in an attempt to gain eternal life. Faust's mind is twisted: at the same time he longs for transcendence, a higher world, perfectness, as well as the temptations of the physical world. But he can't reach either, he feels imprisoned within himself and unable to apprehend the world outside his mind. Still Faust is condemned to submerge himself restlessly in the reality of the world. - Do we recognize BF as presented by several of his works? ... Now an idea springs to mind! Wouldn't 'Faust' be a good suggestion for the next Roxy Music album? An album with a German touch, in the Kurt Weill style of Bitter-sweet, The Bogus Man, Casanova; an album about "falling in love means selling your soul to a woman", an album with fate and devilish darkness, not like a Bete Noire but like a Black Widow, the spider that consumes her husband as others their wine, and ... [have to stop now, my fantasy is running wild]. Goethe was an admirer of both Lord Byron and Shakespeare. He wrote an essay about the latter. Shakespeare? Now I fall silent. I can't say much about it. It wasn't part of my education, as I'm one of those non-English barbarians. There certainly are references to Shakespeare in BF's works: Sonnet 18, and the mentioning of Desdemona in New York City. Maybe there are more? Please, tell me. When I re-read the above and remember the ASFE discussions of the last two months, it seems as if I only see the sorrow and misery in BF's works. Of course there are more aspects, such as humour. One of my cheerful favourites is 'Would You Believe?', and the lines "I'll love you all my life, and in the morning too" belong to the funniest things I've ever read. Finally, dear KBP, I did't want to disturb your call for discussing Spin Me Round, but your posts about Lord Byron were still haunting me. I'll let you the choice about how to continue: with Spin Me Round, with the literature (I'm curious about Shakespeare!), or maybe both? And then, after these subjects, I already see another subject looming up on the horizon: Mamouna. But er, I'm afraid I'm going a bit too fast now. Kind regards, Your literature professor Ton _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 09:31:33 -0500 From: "Denis Smith" Subject: [AVALON] Paris shows? Hi everyone, I've just joined the list, and followed the threads for a couple of days. I haven't seen any rumours about Paris yet , but some rumoured shows for europe are happening around the time I will be in there, ( 1st 2 weeks of sept), so I'd love to know if there are any rumours floating about yet ( I can't think of a more suitable place than paris for roxy to play) My wife and I are going to the toronto shows (reasonably good, albeit more $$$ than I like paying for a show, least of all one in a hockey arena (usual big hall poor acoustics problem). The last time we saw roxy was 78 in a much better venue, and it was an amazing show. To comment on the threads i've followed - - I too thought we had killed prog rock off in 76, ( although radiohead tried hard to relive the concept album for us), If I get tempted to find an elp or yes album I'll immediately take a dose of early clash followed by joy division----if I have to dig out old vinyl, I'd much rather it was those than prog rock Are there any other members going to the toronto show????? ps - no kids cats or dogs named after any idols Denis ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 22:37:34 +0100 From: "David Squires " Subject: Re: [AVALON] The Best Of Roxy Music Track List is...
