After all this time, I'm beginning to see a pattern emerging here - it's like the X-Men !! No, my friends you're not alone - shunned by a world that hates and fears you, you have found your way here to our very own school for the prog-gifted. Here we can talk freely about Gryphon, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Hatfield and The North, National Health, Bruford, Magma, Steve Hillage, BeBop Deluxe, Camel, Tangerine Dream, Yes, Focus, Calliope, Premiata Forneria Marconi, ELP, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Klaus Schulze, Eloy, Gong, Jethro Tull ... the list is seemingly endless (like a good drum solo) ! But remember, my children, we must only ever use our prog-powers for good !! S;^) Welcome home, Professor Xivor. - ------------------------------------- And Steve Siren replied: I'm very disturbed by the recent outbreak of prog rock on the list. Whilst I've been aware for a long time that there was an isolated case in the south, I had hoped it had been isolated, unfortunately it seems to have spread elsewhere. Symptoms include a tendency to drone on about long forgotten bands& talking in a strange tongue, e.g.. "Disembowelled dandelions manoeuvred sliding reflecting fish, while Penguins reach painfully for the orchid sky" whilst a group of mediaeval monks chant on aimlessly in the background. A 5 mile no go area around all infected creatures has been announced, in tandem with the inevitable cull or vaccination of the sad misguided people who worship at the door of prog rock (amazingly these people actually ENJOY concept albums!) For the not to bad cases I think a dose of Dr. Feelgood should suffice, for the more seriously infected I recommend the Clash's 1st LP played at maximum volume., if this doesn't work try Crass ( but please only with a medically trained person nearby). The Prime Minister has agreed to postpone the election until the current outbreak is under control, remember we thought we'd killed it off in '77 , don't let this happen to you. That is why we must be vigilant and promote free-thinking in music. The BPRM know nothing but hate and intolerance, seeking to destroy that which they do not understand. See how they define their music by what it *isn't*, rather than what it *is* and have no tolerance for time signatures other than those made up entirely of 4's or chord names with numbers in. Left undefended, we would be knee-deep in soundalike bands, churning out the same three-minute songs over and over again, afraid to experiment for fear of being branded 'musicians'. These misguided 'thought police' of music must not be allowed to spread their poison unchecked - undiluted, it would once again seek to homogenise music, stifling all other innovation (as it did before, thereby unwittingly empowering the music industry moguls to bestride a blanded-out music scene in the 80's). Punk has its place of course, but without the counterbalance of the prog, it would plunge us into yet another musical dark age. But then, in truth, punk was never really about *music*, was it ? I think that your high school years are the real formative years music-wise and for me high school began in 1970. At that time all the prog groups that everyone been talking about were favorites. Alice Cooper was also a personal favorite (after having seen them at the Fillmore). And Todd Rundgren was a biggie too. Then the glam movement came along and T.Rex, Slade, etc became big. But it was Bowie and Roxy Music that were my obsessions. I wanted to BE Bowie. I loved Roxy Music beyond all reason. It was also because no one had heard about them ( inevitably when I told people I liked Roxy Music the reply was "what kind of Music?") The holy trinity during the first half of the 70's was Bowie/Roxy/Todd. Then punk came along-Television-Ramones-Talking Heads in the US and too many groups to mention from the UK. I have always been an anglophile and other than Todd and the NY punks-my favorites have all been English. My name is jads and I am an anglophile. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Apr 2001 22:49:58 +0100 From: stevesiren Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: MUSIC - The Lessons of Year Zero Good points Ivor, but I can't let you get away with your claim that the Clash make the same three minute song over & over again.
