I thought some of the Blow Monkeys stuff was OK, and some of the Doc's solo
material, but ABC really got up my nose. Ever since they first appeared it
has pissed me off that so many people continue to take Martin Fry the
slightest bit seriously. So I'm glad to find an ally here; well said, Neil!
BTW, while channel-hopping one day last week I saw a few seconds of the
awful Suggs Karaoke show on Channel 5 (I think), mercifully with the sound
off. I thought I spotted Fry pimping his talentless bod in this appalling
venue. How are the (not) mighty fallen!

This is what he had to say to NME (pretty positive!):
Eno also gave the thumbs up to his ex-Roxy Music bandmates, as they prepare
to reform the band without Eno. He said: "I'm jubilant. I think it's fine
that they're doing it, but I don't like the idea of doing something again.
How can it not be compared to the past? It's not my thing. I'm happy that
they're doing it and good for them, but it's not my thing."

Me too! And , like the Roxy Music tour, it won't happen until it
happens.
I saw XTC a couple of times in 1980. A quintessential English band.
Next on my list would be to see Microdisney back together. It'll never
happen.

I was saying about waiting for XTC to actually go on tour, knowing that would
never happen, because not only are they one of my favorite bands, but I truly
believe they were one of the better live bands I saw.
I saw them a bunch of times-at Hurrah's in NYC and as a surprise at the
Beacon Theater on New Years Eve 1979 (?) opening for Talking Heads (I think
it was the Go2 era)

Windy City Advisory
To all Chicago area folks or anyone wishing to attend the Monday, July 30,
2001 Chicago area Roxy Music show.
I am sorry to say there is still a more than a tad bite of confusion as to
when these tickets actually go on sale.
The Basics:
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- -------------
Roxy Music
Rosemont (Chicago), Monday 30th July
Allstate Arena, 6920 North Mannheim Rd. Rosemont, IL 60018
Box office Line: 847-635-6601
Ticket Vendor: Ticketmaster 312-559-1212
Admission - $75.00 and $45.00.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- --------------
The facts as of 12:00 Noon EST March 24, 2001 are as follows:
The SFX web site states "Tickets Go On Sale" April 8th, 2001
BUT.....
The Allstate Arena Venue Web site states:
"Tickets Go On Sale" Sunday, March 25, 2001 @ 12:00 Noon.
This itself is nice information except for the fact that The Allstate Arena
Box Office Recording states that the "Walk up Box Office Window" is closed
on Sundays unless there is a Sunday event of some type.
In such cases the Box Office Window opens 3 hours before the time of the
event.
Now...
The Allstate Arena online Calendar of events does show a Chicago Wolves vs
Milwaukee hockey game slated for Sunday, March 25, 2001 @ 4:00PM.
Someone locally might try contacting the Box Office Line @ 847- 635-6601.
They are open today Saturday From 12:00 Noon until 5:00PM Local / Central
Time.

Seeing all the confusion reigning on the list relative to the onsale date
for Chicago, trouble people are having accessing their TM online accounts,
etc., brings back a lot of bad memories. Ticketmaster is absolutely evil. If
you call and actually talk to a person, it's some poor ignorant schmuck
who's dumber than a box of rocks and can barely read their script. They have
absolutely no thinking power of their own. If I ever got someone with a
heartbeat, I'd probably fall down in shock. If there were absolutely any
other way of getting tickets, short of a 300 mile round trip to Chicago to
buy them in person, I'd never consider TM. I only pray that Roxy is one of
the events that they list up front on their phone system, and you can buy
just by punching buttons. I bought my tix for U2 in Indianapolis this way,
and it was the most painless way I've ever used TM, much better than their
haphazard website.
I could prattle on endlessly about these guys, but will spare you all.
Regards,
Jeff

I saw XTC in a small club in Leicestershire, in the summer of '77 (cap.

The sort of venue where you could have a drink with the band
afterwards,& over a pint Andy Partridge told me he thought Roxy were
"OK."! It was obvious even then they were going places, but they never
became as big as thier talent deserved.
I recall they did a blistering version of "All Along the Watchtower" ,"
Science Friction" was the great lost single of 1977.

Seems lately, a rather superior elitist view has overtaken the mailing list.
Other than a few avante garde artists or groups everyone else is held up to
derision or contempt. Serious artists like John Fogerty and Bono. They may not
be your favorite artists but surely they've struck a chord with music fans out
there and you couldn't accuse them of being the flavor of the month sort of
thing. My favorite artists are BF/Roxy, Stan Ridgway, Caravan, Alan Hull and
Tom Waits... but I don't think any of them are going to make it into the hall
of fame. First of all the music has to stand the test of time (25 yrs til
eligible) ie; are they still playing it on the radio. Secondarily, you need
more than a cult following. I think to that degree Creedence Clearwater is
quite deserving. They had a lot of hits, and a quite infectious sound...Neil
it warms the cockles of my heart to know there is another Ridgway fan out
there, even if you spell his name with an E. Wait a second, what is a cockle
anyways? Running out of time <<<

Oh, you can sit there when you get there. What they mean is that they
aren't going to give you the option of buying the lower priced lawn

MAGAZINE! Yup - anybody out there lucky enough to have seen the REAL Ultravox? That being the one with John Foxx? Around the same period of time I saw XTC I saw them at a place in Costa Mesa California called "The Cuckoos Nest".... dinky little place and a simply awesome show.
Whatever became of Howard Devoto?

Saw them open for the Police at the Cleveland Agora in 1978...I was happy enough that night....but when they backed off touring ever again, I was REAL grateful to have seen them...also saw Magazine at the Phantasy Niteclub in cleveland 1979...another great experience...packed house, it was great...

I saw the real Ultravox-John Foxx at Hurrah's. I also saw Ultravox Pt2 at
Lincoln Center. 2 different bands-both great in their own way.
I also saw Magazine a bunch of times-Ritz in NYC-and saw Howard Devoto solo
at the Peppermint Lounge. He went on to join Luxuria and put out one album
(Beast Box) that had one hit 45-Rainy Season. He stopped music for years and
only recently came back to compile the Magazine box set "Maybe It's Right to
be Nervous Now"
Since it looks like we're starting to talk about old concerts of greats-I
have to mention the Only Ones who were great-live and on record. I used to
hang out at CBGBs and Max's-and was there for the beginning of punk. Saw
Blondie/Ramones/Suicide with only about 20 people in the club. Saw
Television many times at CBGBs, Maxs, Mudd Club-and the Lower Manhattan Ocean
Club. Television were always one of my favorites of the time.
In a Roxy Music vein-the one group that always reminded me of Roxy was Japan.
David Sylvian had that Ferry sound to his voice. Japan did make a few
excellent albums (Tin Drum especially) but Sylvian went on to make some great
solo recordings.
This is certainly bringing back great memories.
How about posting some of your favorite concerts. I did this with some
friends-about the days when 3 groups would be on a bill and sometimes you got
a classic show. One of my favorite triple bills was at the Academy of
Music-King Crimson, Special Guests Procol Harum and Yes as 3rd on bill.
Another one was Elvis Costrello & Attractions, Special Guests Rockpile with
Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds and Mink DeVille. There was also Bryan Ferry and
Talking Heads at the Bottom Line.
And of course maybe the best ever: Mott the Hoople and Queen at the Uris
Theater.

Well, given that this
https://ticketing.ticketmaster.com/seasontickets/greekven01/index.html
subscriber pre-order thingie states "DEADLINE FOR ALL ORDERS IS APRIL 16,
2001," one might reasonably assume that they will not be on sale prior to
that date.
On the other hand, anybody can use that form, so in a sense they ALREADY
ARE on sale. You just won't know where you're sitting for a while.
Rickmond/Ida et al: I'm up for whatever can be done to up the priority of
seating assignment. Hey, last U.S. show ever... whether in the seat I've
already ordered or in something better, I'm there.
