So it`s not worth the waste of good explosives. ;-) BTW, the Hard Rock here in Gatlinburg will have the Beatles' Magic Mystery Tour bus on display this week. They`re holding a drawing in the hopes of unloading the damn thing on some rube. Gene Another bullshit statement above. Many Inducties, celebrities and others whose opinion are far more valuable than Gene's here, have had nothing but praise for the institution. But like the Grammys, Emmy's, and Academy Awards...Rock Hall Inductions will always create controversy because we don't all agree on much of anything. The Rock Hall is far more than a "Hard Rock without Burgers" as others are so jealously prone to repeat. Its better than the EMP as well. I visited both last summer. Soon every city will have their own "rock hall of fame", but there will still only be one that is official. There are a lot of interesting concerts and programs that go on in Cleveland due to the Rock Hall being there. For instance the American Music Masters concerts at Severance Hall. They pick one early influence a year to honor with many musical guests who appear to perform. Bruce showed up to play at the one that honored Woody Guthrie.(or maybe it was Robert Johnson, can't remember) And this past month The James Gang reunion complete with Joe Walsh back in Cleveland where he started (Kent State), took place for 3 sold out nights. They also have the Summer in the City Concert Series every wednesday night at the Rock Hall. Last year Pere Ubu started the summer series off. That was really good. So to all naysayers, fools, and jealous little mouses out there...sling not your arrows at the Rock Hall until you have actually visited it. It is a great institution. If I were to guess, I would say Roxy will get in some day. But mostly bands who had several hits, or were politically important to music get in on the "first ballot" so to speak. Be patient. Well, he wanted to know, what about Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock and Eminem. Too soon to tell, I reckon, but still what's it take to get in or, more importantly (especially considering that Roxy Music and King Crimson aren't in), what keeps some bands out? Arnie Ignorance; The ignorance of 1000 music industry types...managers, record producers, record company executives...rolling stone editors...artists...most of whom are old, and prone to award their peers or the groups they grew up listening too...120 isn't really that many in 16 years considering it is the first 16 years... I am very happy that The Velvet Underground got in...no hits, no record sales, but very influential...how do we compare that with say, Grand Funk Railroad, who had 7 or 8 bonafide "hit"s, and a long successful career, but not a sniff of getting in??? Its consensus...the same so called concensus that puts George W in office, and the Spice Girls at the top of the charts...dumb choices are made by MOST people... I just hope The New York Dolls, Iggy, The Sex Pistols, Devo, Pere Ubu, The Clash, The Jam and others would get the same consideration as the Velvets did...but then again, the Velvets are from New York...Ramones, Blondie, Televison, Talking Heads will have a much better shot at it than for example, The Pretenders, Devo, The Replacements, The Dead Boys, The Cramps, heck, what about Marilyn Manson...?? How can one possibly explain how the Rock Hall nomination committee draws the line? Its really a hodge podge...I heard that John "Cougar" Mellancamp is so pissed that he isnt represented at the Rock Hall in their displays that he is pissed off at them and won't contribute "memorabilia"...People who have never visited the Rock Hall have no idea, that the memorabilia on display encompasses all of rock history, not just Inductees... There is/was a wall of Seattle scene, NY-London scene, San Francisco, Memphis...there are rotating exhibits such as the John Lennon one, and the Hendrix one that are occuring right now...all you naysayers out there should really check the place out... And just what the hell makes "their" opinions more valuable than mine? Because they`re Inductees, celebrities and others? Ha! That ludicrous! Who are these people of such high opinion with the last word on which artist is more superior or deserving than another? Something as galactically subjective and personal as music should NOT be defined by a handful of elitist Philistines looking after their bottom line. The R&R Hall of Sham is NOT about artist or music. It`s about making money, and while there`s nothing wrong with that, don`t expect me to buy into the bullshit. If I want to visit a Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, then I`ll check out "MY" collection. Gene Music is spiritual. The music business is not. The Blue Nile. Once one of nature's PERFECT bands. There were a TON of groups that took plenty of hints from late period Roxy in the 80s but there was only one band who I thought leapfrogged their inlfuences in quality and that was The Blue Nile. Note: the singer sounds NOTHING like Ferry and the music is completely different. This is not a David Sylvian situation, here. It's in the thematic area that the two groups can be most directly compared. Paul Buchanan's muse speaks the same language as Mr. Ferry's. Their stunning debut, "A Walk Across The Rooftops," manages to make Ferry sound positively churlish in comparison! I have NEVER heard such eloquent heartache of love, loss and longing set to such other-worldly music before. The feeling of s p a c e in the music was utterly unique. I used to describe them to virgins in this way - what if Frank Sinatra grew up in Glasgow listening to Roxy Music. It's a lasting regret that I never got to hear Sinatra record "Tinseltown In The Rain." He complained that they just weren't writing songs for him any more in the 80s but I wonder... The 1st album creates a world of its own and is my desert island disc. I have long maintained that I could listen to nothing else and get all of my musical vitamins. 17 years on and it STILL raises the hairs on the back of my neck just typing about it! Seven years later thay released "Hats" which embellished the themes and emotions of the first album with some triumphant positivism. The rare sequel that was an equal. 12 years on and IT still raises the hairs on the back of my neck just typing about it! I'm just thinking about "Saturday Night" and I'm getting all dewy-eyed. Unfortunately 7 years later they released the - gulp - ordinary seeming "Peace At Last" and a rare bit of perfection became grounded in my eyes. The bold confidence of the first two albums was replaced with excursions of a tentative nature. It just didn't gel like the prevoius albums. Still, it is interesting to hear that Bryan's a fan since I considered them a rare case of student trumps teacher in the post-Avalon sweepstakes. Here's hoping the 4th album in 2003 is back up to par. Any Roxy Music fan who doesn't just love pre-75 material should seek them out. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 04:08:28 From: "mark shanahan" Subject: Re: [AVALON] the @!#* r-n-r hall of shame >From: "tmoq" >BTW, the Hard Rock here in Gatlinburg will have the Beatles' Magic Mystery >Tour bus on display this week.
