This corporate entity has consolidated its hold on a truly mind-boggling array of media outlets. They own a HUGE chunk of radio and television bandwidth in Orlando, where I live. They have a "Pro-Family" stance for what that's worth. They can gobble up bandwidth thanks to Ronald Reagan's gutting of the FCC back in the 80s. They are in fact, the Microsoft of entertainment. And you thought Ticketmaster was a problem! What about promoters owning the venues where the acts can play? That is why this Roxy Music tour is being brought to you by their SFX live promotion division at all fine SFX-run venues across North America. Sorry, Cleveland... no SFX-owned venue, then we're afraid that Roxy Music JUST CAN'T play there, no matter HOW CRUCIAL a market it is has been since day one for them. I did a search on the SFX website, inputting a Cle zip code to find a nearby venue and their search engine gave me results in Pennsylvania! My wife and I were pondering that without a SFX venue, the tour would ultimately miss Cleveland and this has been borne out. Pearl Jam were naive to mount a holy crusade [that failed, god love 'em] against Ticketmaster when Clear Channel/Cox represents a far more dangerous control of the marketplace. Five will get you ten that they will own Ticketmaster one day to not too far down the line. Why should they not be making any profit on the ticket sales end as well? But will this consolidation of the marketplace result in further ease as a consumer? Making choices represents a difficulty to some and with a single, centralized supplier of entertainment, won't that make for a far easier entertainment consumption experience? Well, you could go to Atlanta's Chastain Park Ampitheatre webpage and have a look at the truly labyrinthian gordian knot of venue policies that I still can't figure out to judge that call. Read what's allowed or not allowed and under which conditions at that facility. Or how about how to buy tickets? It reads like a software license!! [ http://www.atlantaconcerts.com/chastain.asp ]And I might also balk at the best seats going to those well- heeled Buckheaders who think nothing of subscribing to the venues' $3600+ Summer Concert series. For those who think I have nothing to do but complain at the result of an actual tour of ROXY MUSIC [!], my hat is off to Phil Manzanera's website for providing extremely current information on a very timely basis! If it's a rumor in Avalon, then it's a fact on Phil's updated daily website! They take their website and it's purpose far more seriously than Ferry's, which is largely an exercise in branding. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 17:11:05 +0000 From: beauxb@cwctv.net Subject: [AVALON] Rare?
