Some of the songs are amongst their best, but as an album it doesn't flow (similar case with Bowie's Aladdin Sane). 3&9 and Tripcrap are stinkers, If It Takes All Night was a great live song but is not Roxy at their best. Looking at the work rate (which seems Olympian by Ferry's standards today) they were probably nearing burnout, Siren being the weary result followed by a lacklustre tour, but at least Siren is a cohesive collection. Simon, surely by "weary" you are using shorthand for "an album which exudes a world weary sigh, is inescapably sad, resonates with the broken-hearted, offers almost no solace to those abandoned in love, and should have a warning label on it "For Hopeless Romantics Only." Uh, right? I think _Siren_ is more than "at least...cohesive." I think it's the most strongly drawn and sharply distinguished of all the Roxy albums. It's tight, it flows, it makes sense. It's a whole soundscape which stands out, distinct. Nothing comes close before, and nothing comes close afterwards (except, I'd argue, _Avalon_, which Ferry has spent his solo career trying to recapture, I'd also argue). However, I will say that a b-flat is a very hard note for even Pavarotti to hit! Bryan's voice is the most stunning and unique ever, I think, and he did manage to hit it on Avalon, but I do admit that nowadays his lower range has stretched, and a couple of the higher ones have become harder. It happens with a lot of people, but doesn't detract from the beauty of his voice. I think he could still manage it in that key, just, and he certainly will have a go. Not someone who gives up easily really! It's quite a hard song to get the breathing correct on, and some of the notes are tricky, since a tenor range tends to peak at a "g" , and you have to hit far higher in it. I think it's even hard to break into falsetto in this one, without sounding odd. He'll manage though! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 19:35:08 -0000 From: "Jane Collard" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Country Life - The lost masterpiece Country Life is my favourite too. Out of the Blue, The Thrill of It All and All I Want is You all easily make it into my top 10 Roxy tracks (although Triptych comes in pretty near the bottom of my "worst ever" selection). It was also the first Roxy album I bought (my copies of the previous albums at the time being on cheap cassettes recorded from friends - pocket money was tight back then so we had to share!). I remember having a huge row with my mother when I brought the album home as she "disapproved" of the cover! Separately, on the More Than This thread - yes, another favourite of mine. I do recall an interview with Ferry during the ATGB tour in which he said something like "I keep wanting to add things (to the set); songs from For Your Pleasure and "More Than This" - only I wrote it in such a high key that it's hard to sing". Mind you, this was early on in the tour and many of us saw (or rather, heard) how his voice just got better and better throughout - so maybe he'll have a rethink (with, as KBP suggests, a little key transposition if necessary). Perhaps you're just too young for 3&9, Simon. This song resonates deeply for me. The ineluctable nature of change and the sense of regret for what's been lost that follows in its' wake. I posted previously that there may be connections with the Local Government Act, 1974. It's that good! Triptych is a real sing-along - well, I do anyway! Admittedly awkward and hard to explain within the context of other songs on the album, I wish Bryan would throw in more "odd" songs like this now and then, to disturb the linearity a little. As for Country Life being a lost masterpiece, less of the lost, please! You're talking about the second album I ever owned! I hope I won't stay (too) long. I must admit I LOVE this album. This met with a bit of criticism at the Glasgow drinks get-together. Diane Whateley collared me with a Chilean white and insisted that Stranded was the only way forward. I tried to keep cool through the shrill of it all. Was most relieved that Jane Collard a fellow CL-traveller has been around at other get-togethers, she helps me stand up to toughie Diane. You get a rough crowd among the Avalonians. I think that my initial reason for loving the album was because of 'AIWIY' which is one of my all-time favourites. It's just got such a wall of sound going on with it. I must have first heard it when I was about 14/15 and remember quite clearly being floored by it. And putting it on again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again etc etc etc. I was so excited I didn't know what to do. Couldn't see, couldn't speak. Every time I hear that noisy opening I feel a 'flip' in my gut, - that feeling - y'all might remember how it used to be? Consequently the album occupies a real soft spot in my heart. I can understand the unpopularity of Triptych. However, I just love the album and if I had ever (in a moment of total delusion) forgotten how great OOTB was, last year's gigs put paid to that. 'Casanova', 'Bitter Sweet' were among other highlights. All CL - take note. Must admit, though, I did NOT like the CL cover. I remember last year that there was a long-running thread on RM's album covers. I spent ages doing a post-modern feminist take (yes we like RM/BF too) on the CL cover. It never got through to the list. Now I'm not one for conspiracies ................... Anyway, have no doubt bored you all enough with my late night ramblings. Away off to have a really good, really good, really good, really good, time. The Right Honourable Mmelle.
