Can't believe roxy are coming back. I'm from Dublin, Ireland and cannot believe that my city is the first date. I've been trying to get another Bryan Ferry website going for a while but have not had the time. I built a site for my other fav artist Robert Palmer last year because surprisingly he has none, unlike Ferry. But I feel compelled to build a site, a fan site, for Ferry as he changed how I listen to music. What's the story? I haven't heard anything about these. (It's rather puzzling that when Ferry has an official site, it has so little information on it.) Whatever they are, I hope they're available on DVD. I was really disappointed that the recent "Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry Video Collection" was only on VHS (and also that it didn't include Avalon and More Than This, as someone else also commented). Regarding Ridley Scott, it was my understanding that yes, he directed Avalon. I haven't been able to confirm this by seeing his name listed in the credits or anything (probably in part because they left it off the aforementioned Collection!). While we're on the topic of miscellaneous trivia, does anyone know why the remastered editions of "Bete Noire" and "Taxi" weren't released domestically in the US? And why Bete Noire seems to have been allowed to go out of print in all versions? His band, Roxy Music, were barely two years old. During their brief and meteoric ascent, they had released three albums and, under Ferry's close artistic guidance, refashioned the rock'n'roll experience as a weirdly costumed trip around some futuristic sound archive. Somewhere between global engagements with Roxy, Ferry had found the time to launch a solo career seemingly dedicated to honouring the songs he grew up listening to. Nowadays, albums of cover versions are a standard career ploy, but back in 1973 such retrospective dalliance was simply not the done thing. Neither was posing for your sleeve photo in full evening dress, like a posh matinie idol from the 1940s. But loosening the iron grip of conformist rock behaviour was precisely Ferry's point, and he had more than enough musical wit and wisdom to back up these outlandish postures. His first solo effort, These Foolish Things, introduced the revolutionary notion that songs from the prerock era could sit side by side with tunes by Dylan and the Stones. On Another Time, Another Place, Ferry pushed even further in the same broad direction. After a tough, guitar-driven slug at the 1960s pop hit The In Crowd, Ferry slid into croon mode for Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. Further on, You Are My Sunshine and Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World supplied a jaunty, if historically inaccurate, prelude to It Ain't Me Babe. The principal agent in this imperious dissolution of time and genre was Ferry's unique vocal style. Pitched somewhere between Nokl Coward and Bob Dylan, and regularly subjected to a shuddering vibrato, That Voice assumed complete mastery over anything it got near, banishing the ghosts of the originals. The use of quirky brass arrangements, with tubas and trombones standing in for the bass guitar, also helped to conjure this brave new Ferryworld. In pop terms, postmodernism started here. He was the Chelsea rich boy Tony, played by Dirk Bogarde in the 60s Losey film adaptation. The Ferry connection has never occurred to me but the staging was very Roxy. The Lyric has a very high stage which, in this production, featured a black backdrop with a steep staircase behind it. The stage was dressed with black, red and silver: black leather sofa, red cushions, cut glass decanters and table lights. The actors were spot lit in strong clear light. The dress too was very Roxy: Tony wore a Chinese lacquer red dressing gown; his girlfriend, black shiny dresses with sparkling jewellery. There were so many tableaux that would have made great Roxy cover art! Jack Davenport's mother, the actress Maria Aitken, and his uncle, the disgraced former politician Jonathan Aitken, were also there which created a bit of tension in the bar. All in all a recommended evening if anyone else is thinking of going! D. Love And as the world turns, so turns the light: Monet, for twenty years, paints at his lilies- The subject, truly, light: yet it has weight. The cool, ironic reds, rebellious yellows- The bitter, blue-tinged ridge of green that shelves Upon a deep mauve sky, upon the eye, Bend with the form and flesh of things themselves. In surface light there lies eternity. Your voice, once half in love with novelty, Now paints at the lonely heart, and though its moods May move so slowly only the tireless eye May see, you see. It lies like water weeds, Always though never the same. You clear your throat- And as the heart turns, so turns the light. B. D. Love currently teaches composition at California State University in Los Angeles as well as writes music and plays for Bukowski's Children, a postdeconstructionist rock and roll band. "I chose to write 'Bryan Ferry' in the sonnet form because, after all, the sonnet is a 'little song,' and as such it stands as enduring proof that less very often conveys more, that apparent simplicity can signify strength, not weakness. Many people don't understand that pop songwriting is a very formal craft, often as structurally demanding as composing a verse sonnet. Bryan Ferry certainly understands this. His later work with his band Roxy Music, and on his own reveals a highly polished craftsmanship that we often don't associate with rock and roll. I wrote this small poem to honor Ferry's songwriting as well as his vocal artistry."
