Stranded tour: STREET LIFE / PYJAMARAMA / MOTHER OF PEARL / AMAZONA / CHANCE MEETING / VIRGINIA PLAIN / A SONG FOR EUROPE / GREY LAGOONS / IN EVERY DREAM HOME A HEARTACHE / LADYTRON / EDITIONS OF YOU / PSALM / IF THERE IS SOMETHING / SERENADE / RE-MAKE RE-MODEL / DO THE STRAND. Country Life tour: PRAIRIE ROSE / GREY LAGOONS / BEAUTY QUEEN / MOTHER OF PEARL / OUT OF THE BLUE / A SONG FOR EUROPE / 3 & 9 / IF IT TAKES ALL NIGHT / BITTERSWEET / IF THERE IS SOMETHING / A REALLY GOOD TIME / STREET LIFE / CASANOVA / IN EVERY DREAM HOME A HEARTACHE / ALL I WANT IS YOU / VIRGINIA PLAIN / EDITIONS OF YOU / THE THRILL OF IT ALL / RE-MAKE RE-MODEL / DO THE STRAND. A Really Good Time wasn't a regular (they used backing tapes for the strings on this one). The boots Real Cool Time, Bitter Sweet and Foolproof all have performances from these tours. After being sent some old audience tapes (of poor quality it has to be said) I've been trying to decide which shows/tours the songs on VIVA come from. This is what I think it could be... Out Of The Blue is 1974, Pyjamarama 1973, The Bogus Man not too sure, Chance Meeting definitely 1973 (they used to segue straight in to Virginia Plain), Both Ends Burning is 1975 (obviously), If There Is Something is 1974 (I think), Dream Home is probably 1974 and Do The Strand 1973. 1974 does seem to be their live peak, with some very powerful performances. It's a real shame VIVA wasn't a double. How about an official live box set to tie in with the tour? Yes please!!! Maybe this may help solving the mystery. Originally, I thought that the reference to the Bridge of Sighs was misplaced, because the scene ("the Seine", nice association, isn't it?) is in Paris, while the bridge of Sighs is in Venice. But, at the same time, BF is talking about a gondola at the Seine. Are there really gondolas over there? Maybe our French Avalonians can give explanation? The reason could be that, by referencing to both Paris and Venice, BF in fact generalizes his song, like he does by using more languages, thus giving it a wider dramatic scope. The more I think about the sighing of the bridge, the more I'm tending to believe that it's just a sighing of astonishment: you fool, why are you so obsessed by women, isn't there more in life? It's a bit similar to the very end of the Let's Stick Together clip, where Jerry Hall - how do you say this? - looks at heaven, expressing: you idiot, you're adoring me, you're obsessed, but still you're sweet and I love you! BTW, some drawbridges really produce a sighing, groaning, creaky sound; if they're made of cast iron that scrapes (scours? - what's the right word?) over each other. And sure, there's a lot of cast iron in Paris. KBP wrote: "I'm still thinking about all this, many of my thoughts here are too rapid and I am not yet capable of verbalizing them on a coherent level." I wanted to share this with you, so I tried to translate it. Excuse me for some possible mistakes. - ------------------------------------------------------ "Roxy Music is alive and kicking with Re-make/Re-model" It's finally going to happen: Roxy music, the pioneering British artrock-formation of the seventies and eighties, will be back soon. With this reunion Bryan Ferry, Phil Manzanera & Andy Mackay (no Brian Eno) react upon the renewed interest in their high-principled music of that time. The sound of Roxy Music is timeless. That is the main reason of the advance of the "tribute-band" Re-make/Re-model led by Ron Snelderweert. Their self-confidence and their belief in the everlasting RM-power led them last month even to London, where they gave a gig in the famous Oval Room during a so called party "A Mad Affair". This ultimate moment got an extra dimension by the attendance of Juliet Mann, Bryan Ferry's manager. "Amazing" was what she said spontanious during the concert of the band from Rotterdam. Also ex-King Crimson-bassplayer Bill McCormick was obvious impressed. It is in all probability that they're once going back to London. But first Re-make/Re-model will play in Het Elfde Gebod in Rotterdam coming saterday. The advance booking for this home-match is going very well. There are just a few tickets left. It seems Lord Byron did spend a stretch of time visiting Venice and frequently sampled local pleasures. I think I remember occasional references on this list aligning Bryan Ferry in some way with Lord Byron - - I thought the references were due to the similarity of the two names. Is it so? Or has BF ever discussed Lord Byron, expressed an interest in his work, or studied Byron's work. If so, that might establish an interest of Byron by Ferry. Anyone? For readers interested in some background on Lord Byron, please follow this link - http://www.byronmania.com/ Please: Does anyone know if Bryan Ferry is a fan of Lord Byron's poetry? Knowledge of an actual Bridge of Sighs in a European city of canals where gondolas do glide, knowing that Ferry may have written A Song For Europe (ASFE) as a parody of the European song contest makes a difference in my level of comprehension of ASFE. Does anyone else have more background on this song that helps establish a frame of reference? Please write soon! Best wishes.
