I have! Only once...Roger McGuinn of the Byrds put up the tab for some of his more famous tunes. Otherwise, I tend to regard most transcriptions of things as approximations, some of which are better than others, and some seemingly transcribed by people who have no sense of pitch or harmony whatsoever. I remember years ago trying to learn some of the more rapid passages of Van Halen's "Eruption" from a highly detailed transcription by Steve Vai; the transcription represented a considerable amount of work on Vai's part for which he is to be commended, but not surprisingly, when played it sounded like Steve Vai's very good impression of the original rather than the original itself. Some of the passages seemed right on the money, others, well...they had that sort of sinister, weird sound for which Vai is known. I think most tab and chord notation, and most sheet music available for pop tunes is a bust, unless written by the guitarist or composer himself. Perhaps not surprisingly pop tunes written by artists who were primarily keyboardists tend to have better transcriptions available b/c there is less ambiguity with a keyboard instrument (ie there's only one way to play the root position c major triad with middle c as the root.) You could easily do that in 3 different positions on the guitar. Furthermore, it is my experience that keyboardists are often, but not always, more musically literate than guitarists and do a better job transcribing. What can I say? Beware of tab on the 'net; it could just be the late night fiddlings of a notation obsessed science geek with minimal musical sensitivity. These are the types who come to parties with Beatles tab/chord sheets and a crappy Yamaha acoustic and proceed to embarrass themselves and everyone listening. :o) Andrew cecilia wrote: > thanks Daniel. I told them: "Not only can I tell you that you sold the one copy you bought in on the first day of release, I can tell you the name of the customer was Lee Sullivan and, if pressed, I could tell you what he does for a living..." Of course, I got the wary look that all madmen get used to when they hunt down their prey...but I do now have the DVD! It's not as good as it could have been (the debate on extras has been well gone into) but it is so much more stylish than some music videos...
