And what an end to it, "Sunset", with the piano coming in and taking your breath away. Sometimes, it annoys me that Ferry's best songs are not so well known in the wider world. "Do the Strand" , "Heartache", "Mother of Pearl" are all widely recognised but who (not the fans) knows all the great album closers like "Sunset", "Spin me Round", "Chain Reaction", "Bete Noire" . As a lyricist, Ferry has few equals, I recall Morrissey singing his praises as one of the great songwriters. How come he's never had a Novello ( is that the right spelling?) TR was a progressive Republican therefore being critical of his more conservative successor William Taft (father of the above mentioned Robert). The Republican party is still split by a liberal wing from the Northeast and a conservative wing from the midwest and the sunbelt. Until Clinton TR has the record of creating National Parks in the US. If you know how the song came into being, you may tend to the latter. The story (myth?) goes that Ferry, annoyed by the silliness of the songs for the European song contest, decided: I can do this better. And so he wrote this over-the-top serious sounding song, poking fun at the lightness of the other ones. However, I've always been intrigued by the exaggeration in this song, saying: I'm deeply sad, everybody must know, let me shout it over Paris, in English is not good enough - they won't understand, so let's do it in French! Oh no, *all the world* must know, let's do it in the most universal language, Latin! This reminds me of the exaggeration in If There Is Something: "I would do anything for you, I would climb mountains, I would swim all the oceans blue, I would walk a thousand miles..." If anybody claims such things, he will be ridiculed, except by the one who really loves him. She will look through his exaggeration and see his serious intentions. I say 'She' and 'his', because only male peacocks show their feathers in this way. Here we touch the provoking ambiguity of Roxy Music. If you don't take the emotion seriously, you're rude, insensitive, uncivilized. But if you do take it seriously while others see a double bottom, you're naive and a victim of manipulation. Quite dangerous! At which side of the medal is ASFE? For me, many songs are undoubtfully serious, such as Strictly Confidential and Spin Me Round. Others are ironical or even a perfect pastiche. If you watch the Musikladen version of Psalm: the sanctimoniousness gushes from your screen. Hey, now I realize I'm re-doing the 'camp' discussion. Let's stop it. I, personally, think that ASFE is a deeply sad song, but the exaggeration adds an ironic touch that makes the heavy content bearable for the listener. Other thoughts? Ton PS. I apologize for not addressing all reactions. Your comments are highly appreciated and they're in my mind while I'm responding. But my posts are already too long.
