I'd like to know what other bands Roxy shared the bill with? Roxy
supported
Bowie on his Ziggy Stardust tour. I know Split Enz opened for them in
Australia (that's how Phil discovered them and produced their album).
The
Sadistic Mika Band opened for them on the Siren tour.
What other memorable acts toured with Roxy?

One thing I like about this mailing list is the global view you get from it. I
think it is human nature to be a bit provincial and forget that ones region of
origin is not the cosmopolitan center of the universe. I was chatting with
someone on Napster who was from Holland. I told him I was from Los Angeles and
he said "Oh, I didn't know Bryan had fans in LA". This wasn't very well
thought out on his part, as Bryan and Roxy have been booked here everytime
they've come to North America. Obviously his people know he has a fan base
here, albeit a cult following. I've been guilty of the same thing, when
talking to a Ferry fan from Chile I was quite surprised to discover his
locale. My first reaction to Bryan's animal hunting comments, were that people
in the UK don't care much about animals. I really don't know enough about the
UK to establish this opinion and on second thought I'm sure their are animal
rights groups there too. I've come to learn that one place is really not that
different from another and that people are fundamentally the same,
compassionate and callous, caring and selfish. The dual nature of man, is that
each one of us, are all these things from time to time...Running out of
time

Although I usually just lurk, I'm so happy about the upcoming US Roxy tour that
I just HAVE to chime in and agree with Debs -- I hate U2 and have for nearly 20
years. Personally I think MTV was their ruination. So re: Eno I really can't
find any commercial or anti-commercial high ground in the reunion debate. Also
- - I wonder if Eno was ever even approached to be a part of the tour at all? On
first read, his quote seemed like so much sour grapes...
This has probably been gone over ad infinitem while I was too busy to read all
the postings, and please forgive me if so, but I loved the fortuitous timing of
the highjacking near-catastrophe and the reunion announcement.
And I sure love this Avalon list!

Let me chime in here and mention that the first time I became aware of U2
my childhood friend, Gary Shiffrar, was babysitting for them while they
played a show at a bar in the Tampa Bay area called the Crown Lounge. I
think they were touring for October at the time and pulled in around 300
people for their show. One of them (can't recall which) kept jabbering
about how he'd just bought his first decent car and it had gotten covered
in mud the day before he had to leave for the tour and all he could do was
think about how much he wanted to get home and wash it. He said he was
terrified someone would decide to wash it for him while he was gone and end
up putting fine scratches in the paint.
I saw them occasionally on MTV when it started up a couple of years later,
but the first time I recall thinking that they were turning into a big deal
was when Showtime aired the US Festival. Then just a few weeks later that
Under A Blood Red Sky concert from Red Rocks, Colorado aired and suddenly
it seemed like I was seeing them every time I turned on the TV. I figured
they'd peaked then. I thought they'd peaked again when The Joshua Tree came
out and they were the only band I can recall hearing on the radio all damn
summer. I was *sure* they'd peaked when Rattle and Hum came out...etc,
etc... ;-)
