The richest country in the world, with a vast underclass and pretty much the end of welfare on the horizon. Race relations almost certain to take a turn for the worse under Bush. Huge corporations given millions of dollars for nothing. The rich to become richer. Alaska to be drilled for a buck's worth of oil. An ugly picture. So maybe it would be better if middle class Americans were more concerned with human rights than animal rights. If indeed the concept of 'rights' for beasts that are incapable of understanding the notion weren't so absurd. The beginning of the Video before the actual concert you were shown all these places & happenings in Europe with an eerie background of chorus. Loved the Video , wish he still had that marvelous singer Yanick Etienne, still with him. She was the best at singing Avalon, in fact all three vocalists were great IMO. 18 songs were done on that Video THe Chosen One seemed quite long as I recall like they added more as the audience loved it. At first I thought you might not be in the US, but with "erols.com" I guess you are. Camden may well be the "Philadelphia" date, but I very much doubt it is the New York date, since it's a few hours away in New Jersey. Tim, yes, it does say a lot about the nation that significant portions of the population are concerned with matters beyond themselves. It says: US citizens enjoy the highest standard of living among all in the world. It says that we have the luxury to be able to be concerned with matters beyond our bare essential needs of food and shelter. Let me be very clear here. The United States of America's 'vast underclass' lives better than the vast majority of people worldwide. What is so great about welfare? Why work for a living while the 'rich' pay all the taxes to support the nation's infrastructure which includes welfare. 'The rich become richer' largely because they put their money to work. Individuals who have not taken upon themselves to self educate, to self initiate, comprise a large portion of the poor. I must state there are innumerable resources available to nearly everyone in the US, free of charge, that may be accessed and used for personal benefit. Philanthropy is alive and well, here, too. Tim, your remarks appear to be ill-informed. America is beautiful. Best wishes. With more groups also playing maybe, but not along when they Come on Marlana, how big do you think MSG is? It holds fewer than 20,000 people. If Roxy is indeed going to be playing outdoor US venues this summer, that is entirely congruent. For example, here in the DC area the dreaded Nissan Pavilion holds 20,000 people (the more acceptable Merriweather Post Pavilion is a few thousand smaller I think). I would assume the outdoor arena on Long Island is about the same size, and what's-its-name outside Boston is about 15,000 capacity. Besides I didn't say Ferry could fill it. But a reformed Roxy, in a metro area which draws from several states with tens of millions of people, could easily fill a 20,000 seat arena. (And by the way, I saw Ferry in '89 at that aforementioned outdoor arena outside Boston and it was full.) I'll take a wild guess - everyone will buy a pair of tie-die trousers in the market and buy a reggae mix tape off the bloke with the big sound system just outside Camden Town station. And just as everyone's chillin' the food poisoning from the dodgy thai food stall will kick in, leading to a mass noodle infestation of the canal, which will then break the air conditioning of the MTV building just down the road. As a result the Roundhouse just up the road will have to re-open as an emergency medical centre, but some hippies will steal the medical supplies and bandage up the Hells Angels. What week does Ferry show up, unconvincingly reading his lines from the Teleprompter, and tripping over the ottoman as he enters the sitting room? Maybe all the time off has increased interest. We'll see. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 11:49:05 -0500 From: David Neuhaus Subject: Re: [AVALON] Camden Date The Beacon, although a great theatre (Roxy played there during the Siren tour, as did Ferry for the Mamouna & ATGB tours) is probably too small for Roxy Remodeled, and I'd hate to see them at the Garden. It's too cold and open (for me, anyway). The revamped Radio City is the best bet, and fits Roxy much better. Roxy played their last two U.S. concerts there in '83, and Ferry played there during the Beti Noire tour. Jones Beach is a possible venue, and so is Jersey's PNC Arts Center but I doubt Roxy would miss an opportunity to play in the heart of Manhattan. I would also bet a second date will added to any gig in New York City (unless, of course, they DO play the Garden). (Colleen - where in DC would Roxy play these days? I saw Ferry at Constitution Hall in '88, (when I lived in Alexandria) but the acoustics were terrible. Wolf Trap? I might have to plan a visit to my sister in Fairfax this summer!) Dave N. I've been having this conversation offlist with another local Avalonian, and our guesses are: for outdoor venues: the Nissan Pavilion (horrible parking/traffic situation) near Manassas, VA the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD (better) Wolf Trap (best) the NIH campus in Bethesda (ideal, but, uh, probably not feasible) indoor the larger venues would be: Nation (if it's still open) Constitution Hall the MCI Center (my best guess) the George Mason University performance center or the Patriot Center Lisner @ George Washington University (I can't imagine they'd consider using the USAir arena with the MCI Center downtown now) Personally my preference would be Gaston Hall at Georgetown, but that's not going to happen.
