Pinochet!) but afraid of violence towards him, so he won't attend the demo and support his opinion. Sorry if my English sound awkward but that's how I feel about it. In "real life" he full of failures as anoyne else; we don't have to agree with his opinion; he's certainly better off within his "artist life" (or at least has been) - that's okay with me; I distrust reality a lot of times. I can totally agree with Andrew? (from Chicago) who says that you can still listen to Wagner even if you are jewish. If a jewish person can't, I can respect and understand his position. By the way: does anyone know a band in rockhistory that has made such a bizarre "comeback" ; I mean splititng up 20 years ago, not coming up with new material and suddenly return for a "farewell". I can't hink of any band; maybe I am wrong. If it would be for the strong followers and to leave a gret memory of it all (and not for the money), they would have played much more europian and asian dates; and concerning style they would have picked more wonderful places (as Ferry picked for ATGB). Does anyone agree? ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 04:19:55 EST From: Julialiva@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy Music tour could be dogged by anti-hunt demonstrators In einer eMail vom 18.02.01 21:46:16 (MEZ) Mitteleuropdische Zeit schreibt ncjones.lewis2@ntlworld.com: << And if the money earned for this helps to finance other creative ventures >> Wish he would but he has never done that in his whole career (had a brilliant chance right after ATGB, could have used his success in a better way, couldn't he?) - so why should I expect him to do this now. Yes, he's not perfect (I am glad he is not) but he these days he does not make a good figure in letting out his (ever been there) conservatism - it is getting worse and hard to bare; as I said before, I don't hold respect for someone who supports violence towards animals (just for fun) and is on the other side afraid of violence towards him. However, it does not surprise me at all; since he showed his likes for Thatcher and other nightmares, his likes for people who seem to love and provoke violence, especially towards humans and who don't give a damned about the kind of people he once belonged too. Sad but true. He should just stick to his music; he's better off there! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 09:44:37 +0000 From: "Simon Galloway" Subject: [AVALON] anoraky >>> Colleen Matan 02/18 5:23 pm >>> >Now anoraky, well, that's another system altogether (but I'll leave that >to Simon [once he's recovered from the AMA festivities]). Early Friday morning we left with about thirteen other Dutch in a bus to London. And from that very moment it just was fantastic. There where two busses, one packed with 55 people and ours with only four other people, almost a whole coach for us alone. The first highlight of this trip was at the French border. One of the guys in the other bus has made a little mistake. It's a normal Dutch custom to bring a little present for your friends abroad. But fifteen kilo's of XTC was a bit too much. You can guess the rest...We all have to bent over while we hear the sound of tight plastic gloves in our ears etc. etc. We have to open our luggage. The wet noses of the hunting dogs spoiled our fancy clothes. When one of the guys behind the desk asked "What's your name" and put his hand behind his ear we all shouted "Virginia Plain" that mend an extra hour waiting. After three hours our bus was allowed to drive further. Heard more jokes about pills in the next hour than in the rest of my life. At that time the bus became a bar, we played a Ferry video, ATGB in the stereo, beer, wine. Just a perfect journey. At 7.30 we arrived at the hotel, just a quick change of clothes and then off to shoeless Joe. Queueless Joe was a better options if you ask me. 45 minutes in a line to meet the famous Jocelyn was a bit too long for us so we decided to go to a restaurant to eat. After we finished it was about 11.30 and we were even to tired to speak so we went back to the hotel and go straight to bed. The next mourning breakfast with, another highlight. One of the guys who was with us is really weird. He has a huge collection of pictures of him with almost all the famous popstars in the world. The stories how he arranged those pictures where so hilarious. "Laugh yourself to death" we say in Holland, you must believe me: this was a near death experience. With Andy I went to Coventgarden near the Spot, we decided to take a quick look to be sure to find it easily in the evening. At the Spot there already was the band and Simon G, and slowly other people came dripping in. Chris Turner, Andrew Shearer, O'BryanFerry and his wife the promoter Colonel J Reecey, all the people we missed the night before. A Coffee, a Beer and laughing with friends, believe me that's better than Foxhunting and excellent for that unique Avalonion community feeling. Round the clock of four back to the Hotel for a Pizza and to dress-up and then back to the Spot. At the metrostation I realised that I forgot the cd's I promised to some people so I returned to the Hotel to get my presents and off again. And what a night it was. The first one I easily recognised by his spotted silkscarf and his elegant coat, Martin and his wife. Good to see them again. Still I was nervous, would The Door Bitch let me in? You'll never know, to be sure I bought two tickets and believe me no problems at the door. I went straight to Emma to buy my winning tickets and then to the bar to buy the medicine that improves my English and my dancing always so dramatically. As normal I made some stupid mistakes, the first one running into Bill McCormick to say "Wonderful you could manage to come Tom' (Wallace). Now I know what 'twisted eyes'are. Ivor wetting his pants, can't remember how I came through that embarrassing moment. It's really something special to go to a party and you're among friends even if you haven't met them in real life. I have to mention Gareth, it was good to see him after all the stories I've heard. Really nice guy. Jonathan, he looked shocked when I introduced myself with Hi I'm Colleen, who are you. Steve Siren, Tracy and her very friendly brother Raymond, they really had a good time. And a lot of other people who where called Lurker or of whom I forgot their name. Great to meet Betsy Fowler looking gorgeous in her tigerskin trousers, I hope the tiger wasn't shot in a hunt but had a more decent life in a cage. Very exclusive tigerskin btw because it was as red as the broche of the goldengate bridge she had on her breast. I had a dance with her and later with John O'Brien, I must admit John, Betsy was the winner these evening. And than the band, I remember when I was at the Ferry concert in Antwerp and I said to some fiends: Have you heard about that coverband, the guy is wearing a white jacket and he'll thinks that makes him BF, it's pathetic. A few weeks later I saw them for the first time not only with my cynic hat on, I even had chosen my cynic underwear for this special occasion. But I was really thrilled. This night they where at their best, very powerful a beautiful set of songs with the highlights for me That's how strong my love is and If there is something. It was wonderful to see the how the crowd chanced from "WAS" (wait and see) to "WOW". I heard that the people of Ferry's management told a friend, "we have to admit that we came he for a quick look and to laugh but they're really amazing". The reaction of Martin was priceless when he spotted their Bryan Eno after three number, he couldn't see him from the beginning from his position. I can't describe his face but he said something like"Oh my goodness look at their Brian Eno". I missed almost all of the video, to busy to talk with old and new friends although I saw the twiggy-one, indeed as cheesy as cheesy can be. And then the raffle, I guess that's the point where it all went wrong with me. I bought 15 tickets and won three prices!. My secret? Put the winning ticket in Jocelyns mouth and let her swallow it. Thank you Jocelyn! The Dutch where going completely out of their mind when one of the Dutch won a prize. And I have this strange behaviour that when I really become enthusiastic I always end that can best be described as a mixture of Michael Jackson, an airplain, Nijinsky and BF. Short of oxygen during my birth my mother says. You have to learn to live with it the doctor said, I can handle it now but on the video of the event I saw Ivor couldn't handle it, I'm sorry Ivor. Embarrassing and exciting thought that everyone is going to see that video. Let me end with a big THANK YOU for the band and especially Ron, without his dedication there was no RM/RM, Jocelyn, Simon and above all the sharp dressed Johnny Reecy, You are a star John, thank you! All the people who where there and made this indeed a mad, fabulous and extraordinary affair. And off coarse all the Dutch with whom I travelled with! One tiny disappointment we missed the fire alarm in our hotel at 2.00 in the night. All the people of the 10 floors had to leave the building, That's what I call a Pyjamadrama. See you all the next time, Han ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 05:57:13 EST From: LeeSullivn@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Spot on! Really though, one must not mistake W's slowness as a sign of intellectual deficiency. Texans typically speak slower (yes, this is true). In fact it is very amusing when a New Yorker and a Texan hold conversations - one falls asleep waiting for responses while the other appears bewildered while actually straining to distinguish the other's words! Now, Neil - my dentist - speaks in moderate metre. It doesn't help, he never gives me enough time, anyway, to carry on conversation. He's always got his hands or dental instruments in my mouth. Close by to where I work are former homes of Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie, the old Pye recording studios, the former HQ of EMI (where the Beatles had their picture taken for the first album and during the Get Back sessions). There are old recording studios dotted about everywhere, in fact, Jazz FM HQ used to be called Odyssey Studios and the likes of Paul McCartney, The Who (and Townshend on his own), The Jam and Marvin Gaye have all recorded here. But what strong connections have Roxy got with London? The Covent Garden rehearsal room (Paul Thompson recalls it was below a gym), the studio at Oxford Circus where they recorded Stranded (and others), Command Studios in Picadilly. And then of course Bryan's HQ in Kensington. For me they don't the same symbolism as Abbey Road (yes, I've been and walked accross the crossing), or the old De Lane Lea studios in Holborn where Hendrix and the Who created their masterpieces - that buliding was reopened last week as a Sainsbury's supermarket. I think Roxy's connections are throughout the UK. London wasn't as important or significant as it was for The Beatles, Hendrix, the Stones, the Who...... SimonG BTW try looking the London rock landmarks book rather than the specific Beatles one. I used to have it somewhere... >>> "Paul Bodine" 02/19 2:43 am >>> I'm sure everyone's heard of the guide "The Beatles London: The Ultimate Guide to Over 400 Beatles Sites in and Around London." Has anything similar every been assembled informally for BF / RM's London, i.e., the key addresses for an RM fan visiting Londontown? Apologies if this has been discussed before . . . October 2000 : Mad idea agreed by more mad people. November 2000 : Mad idea to be called A Mad Affair. December 2000 : Even madder people start to buy tickets. February 16th, 2001 : The madness of the day before : Scurrying away from the Shop, awaiting Chris T's arrival from the west country, meanwhile Jocelyn still busy at work, rattling the nerves of various colleagues as she awaits the finished product - the 'RM' logo a-la 1974, to decorate stage front the following evening. A signboard too, for the entrance to 'The Oval Room' - just so people know exactly what they're letting themselves in for. Sort of. It read : A Mad Affair - An Avalon / Strandpower production. We meet at Shoeless Joes some hours later, whilst the Dutch were busy entertaining our Customs Officers. The clans were beginning to gather. A reasonably well behaved night, surprisingly enough. Excitement was building. February 17th, 2001 : A Mad Affair. Some 218 days after the idea first raised it's drunken head during the early hours in a seaside nightclub in Scheveningen, Holland, the day of reckoning was finally, finally with us. I'll spare you the details of July to January, the days of a thousand emails, the drinks, the meetings, the dinners, the planning, the arguments, the tears, the fights, the tantrums (sorry, artistic license gone wild) that happened during those formative months. But, you know, we were but innocents, back then. Infants. None of us knew anything about being sharply dressed. The door bitch classes hadn't even begun as yet. Simon G, DJ extraordinaire, arrived at the Spot in time, as did the Band. It was just after midday. The rest of us were late (fashionably). A panicky cab ride ensued, as I grimaced at every single bump in the road, thinking only of the glass-framed goodies in the back. We were on our way, the raffle prizes, myself, Chris T., and Andrew Shearer, our pyrotechy lightman (though he didn't know it yet...) Some of the Dutch had arrived to case the joint, in advance. J.O'B and Emma then arrived, as did Ivor, and we were treated to an impromptu soundcheck by the Remake lads. A quick run through too of the beginning (lights out - straight into Sultanesque) and it was really getting exciting - and there was hours to wait... I insisted 'Chansons Dans La Nuit' was played over the p.a., to calm the nerves. Well, my nerves anyway. Jocelyn arrived with the Logo, signs, and a million tons of wrapping paper for the CD prizes. And TGPT's drumsticks. And the Scarf. Then we were into 'display' mode, sorting the Venue, getting it all just to our liking. Remake went out to wander, eat, relax. Chris T, Simon and Andrew did the same. Then myself, Jocelyn and Ivor. 18.30 hours. Time to get back. Time to get changed. The time to make plans has passed, faded away... (continued)... ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 11:54:17 -0600 From: "Rod LeCloux" Subject: Fw: [AVALON] Silk Circles vs. Why DO You Think I'm A Funky Chick? Friday 5.30pm Getting very nervous, which isn't usual for me. In fact, I was so bad I stayed late at work and had a cup of tea to calm myself down, then made my way to Shoeless Joes (note: for future meetings, don't go there again). In Shoeless Joes finally found Jocelyn, couldn't find anyone else, a few mistaken identities, a missed call on the mobile (useless things) then all of a sudden JO'B and John Fulton, then Frank and his wife, Therese and her brother and finally Reecey and Chris T. Left early to sort out things at home and prepare for the day ahead..... Saturday 17 Feb Made the short bus journey from my house to Covent Garden (about 4 miles), arriving at about 12.15 to be greeted by Ron who recognised me straight away (although we'd never met before - this set the tone for the rest of the day with loads of people knowing who I was - spooky). He introduced me to the band, who were already setting up. Thankfully they were super-efficiently organised, so the afternoon was quite relaxed (for me at least). But Cor (Eno) had a question "Cor Blimey guv'nor - what does that mean?" Why ask me? It's a cockney thing, and I ain't no cockney guv'nor! I sorted the DJ gear and tested out the PA. People slowly arrived throughout the afternoon to lend a hand, and all help gratefully received! FFWD...... 6.52pm precisely. I started the first MAD MIX cd, the soundtrack of our lives that would take us up to 8pm, "The Model" by Kraftwerk being the 5 minute warning for the band. People slowly arriving, food is served then the Dutch are everywhere. Bill Macormack arrives and is almost suddenly confronted by Han. Ooops! Mistaken identity! 8pm The Spot becomes hot, the room comfortably full, Kraftwerk strike up. PANIC STATIONS!!! Andrew takes his place at the lights, I get ready on the cd's, the band are on standby. The stomach displacing wobble of SULTANESQUE begins, the lights are dimmed, and I can't see the stage from where I'm sat, but everyone is cheering. I hear the wind/ethereal noises coming out of the PA, the sax begins, and a voice comes from behind the curtain "you got me girl on the runround". A huge cheer from the Dutch at the front.... "lady, if you want to find a lover"... Ron appears from behind the curtain - the whole place cheers! This is it, no turning back. 4 months of preparation, and now it's finally happening..... The sound is Roxy, the set list? Ladytron Street Life (hoooorraaayyyyyy) The In Crowd (at The Spot where the beat's really hot!) Out Of The Blue 2HB Love Is The Drug The Price Of Love The Only Face A Song For Europe Carrickefergus Mother Of Pearl Chance Meeting Both Ends Burning Shame Shame Shame Virginia Plain Editions Of You Let's Stick Together If There Is Something Do The Strand That's How Strong My Love Is Jealous Guy Re-Make/Re-Model From start to finish I can feel myself smiling, and I don't think I stood still for longer than 5 minutes. Down the front (risking my life) taking photos, stopping off to chat to various people around the room, and just having a good time! Everyone agrees that the band are fantastic, the key moment that won over the cynics must have been 2HB. Sublime and affecting, demonstrating that RM/RM are capable of reproducing the Roxy light and shade, whilst adding their own "Dutch Touch" - the essential ingredient if you ask me! Most asked question on the night - "you look too young to be a Roxy fan".... but my mum said it last night, "since the cradle" - so there you have it if you didn't believe me. It ain't over yet..... 10.45pm - The Video Not as loud as we wanted, but those who wanted to watch did - half the room rooted to the spot - Ladytron, Grey Lagoons, These Foolish Things, THE TWIGGY DUET!!!! People rushed the stage, gasps of amazement and shock, then a round of applause. The Holy Grail? Some said it was... 11.30pm - The Raffle First a presentation to the band (a number plate of CPL 593H), to the event organisers (an AMA mug each), the guest who came the greatest distance (Betsy). To the raffle itself..... No one, and I mean no one was allowed in without buying at least one raffle ticket (thanks Emma), and then came the time for the big draw. Ivor held the magic box, Bill M. drew the tickets, Reecey exhibited the prizes and myself and Jocelyn made the announcements. A few got lucky, several times (fix? nah!) and Jocelyn proposed an emotional toast to The Great Paul Thompson. A few thankyous and we were nearing the end. Last chance for photos, exchange numbers, addresses, plans for the tour. 1am - chucking out time. After nearly 13 hours in The Spot it was all over. A night bus home and very little sleep, still buzzing and trying to figure just who everyone was. Maybe name badges would have been a good idea after all. A fantastic evening, well worth every moment of the planning we put into it and it ran so spookily smooth. Lots of memories already, and I can't wait to see the photos and the videos and.... JO'B - just why did you get everybodys signatures? I'm still tired, it'll probably take all week to recover. What's next?
