Also I am glad that the "spiteful" interpretation I got from the original post was incorrect (it seamed so at odds with your well crafted/worded reasonings posted earlier.) I agree that it is a good thing when someone in an industry which prides itself on being "PC" feels able to openly support something which would have the likes of Sting spinning in The Police's grave, (or would this born aging country gentleman support fox hunting now? - certainly not publicly!) Surely this should give you some insight into the motivations behind the reunion? Ferry is the man who reportedly shelved a Ferry/Dave Stewart project (which would have sold on curiosity alone) because he was not happy with it. Has resisted many other greasy envelopes stuffed with fifty quid notes to reform Roxy. Maybe his explanations in the recant press conference were sincere. The warm reception given to Roxy reinterpretations during the ATGB tour (loved the version of Casanova on the Paris DVD) has spurned him to make this move. So what if he makes a lot of money doing it, if I was talented enough to have this back catalogue behind me then I would feel justified in replaying it to a live audience every now and then. And if the money earned for this helps to finance other creative ventures (similar to what Gary Oldman used to do - Hollywood bad guy then make a low budget "gritty drama") then so much the better. Maybe a man who is not afraid of speaking out against what appears to be the popular mood of the time is not so easily bought! (OK the was muted by the promoters - but they sign the cheques - and no one is perfect, not even Bryan Ferry!) That seems rather unfair. Certainly Mr. Ferry enjoys the right to express his opinions on issues. And if his doing so makes it hard for those who purport to hold a moral stance on an issue, well, then so be it. Part of holding such a stance involves sacrifice, and that's why I often admire the people who truly do espouse these ideas and/or objections. No one said doing The Right Thing, whatever you hold that to be, was going to be easy. Which is why I am a bit disappointed Mr. Ferry has withdrawn from the demonstration (unless his being there puts others in more danger). Yet far more poignant, to me, is that she appears to have said this just *prior* to "Her" entrance. Which could be somewhat mundanely explained by the date having already spotted Her elsewhere at the affair and has now returned to The Room to utter the words, though I much prefer an image of her having been at his side the whole time. Either way, there's lyrical nuance ("_then_ you know, why...") indicating prescience on her part of the imminent watershed event. Magical. > The song is smattered with lyrical curios. "The soft paper cup that you > squeeze" and "Christmas trees you were sure weren't the sort to build up > your hopes and sell you short." Odd references, don't you think ? Out of > kilter with the deluxe and delightful musings found in the rest of the > canon. It's always been one of his most difficult set of lyrics for me to penetrate on anything but a deeply personal level. So replete with such nuance -- "to build up your hopes" versus "to build you up", "you make your way" versus "you make up your way" ... superficially similar couplets with (or evoking) vastly different connotations -- that I find myself frequently believing the, er... "narrative" aspect almost intentionally difficult to follow. Are we meant to accept that the protagonist is first quite literally talking to the walls, then to accompany him on his journey inwards, following the metaphoric stream-of-consciousness leaps? I know I can't. Or at least almost certainly not using imagery identical to that born in Bryan's mind. I mean, 20+ years and I still don't know precisely what, or who, the Christmas trees are. But in the context of mental descent and the preceding line, it's no less compelling an image for all its nebulousness. Drawing attention to that little word "like" you [perhaps inadvertantly] omitted from "the soft paper cup that you squeeze": Is there not a reference thus implied, upon which the entire phrase pivots? Both lyrically and musically, this piece is otherwise too finely crafted for me to buy into the view of a mere series of cleverly phrased musings carelessly punctuated by a couple of oddities; there's simply too much evidence of cohesiveness, of mental journey in a time of personal crisis. Nothing at all out of kilter in this gem, IMO -- it's just a rather unique and opaque one. -wfs ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 23:45:16 -0500 From: "therese" Subject: [AVALON] AMA Dear All A Mad Affair? - here is my tuppence worth. Sorry it's a wee bit lengthy but I'm too tired to edit. Recent readers will know I get terribly stressed on my way to BF events. This was no difference as I hysterically dragged my brother Raymond into a taxi in London to collect my pal Vanessa who had flown in from NYC for the event. We had a clear margin of 45 minutes but you never know was my opinion. Upon entering 'The Spot' and making it past the red rope- v. Studio 54. We tripped stylishly up the stairs. The room was full of extremely smartly dressed people all looking an eensy bit nervous. I thought that was because of ReMake/ReModel but no. They were trying to avoid mortgaging their houses on raffle tickets - you can resist everything except temptation. The prospect of winning 'the Scarf' was leading to shameless negotiation with bank managers and credit card companies on mobile phones. I had to push my way past some PR impresario next to me at the bar. Oh my God! It's Reecey in an extremely sharp black suit with a nice RM badge. Sharp dressed man indeed. Anyway people were all behaving pretty politely until RM/RM took to the stage. A bit of toe tapping, a bit of leg jiggling, a bit of bouncing up and down - sod it. Me and my two compatriots were going daft. Vanessa said it was a real pleasure hearing every song sung word for word by me and Raymond - it was what she'd come all the way from NYC for after all. I wondered if we were dancing too enthusiastically until I saw Hans going daft at 'Street Life' - there must have been tidal waves in Japan as a result of his doing his thing. What about the band? In a word superb! Polished, confident, faithful, fun and a superb setlist. Personal standouts were ' A Song for Europe' (Reecey' s review is spot on - what a saxophonist), 'If There is Something' 'Price of Love' - that was fantastic, 'Both Ends Burning' 'Mother of Pearl' I really could go on - those are the ones at the forefront of my mind. They even get the car intro at the beginning of 'Love is the Drug' and to hear 'Virginia Plain screamed back at the band in a variety of national and international accents really was an experience. Superb frontman - how does a fair haired, 5foot six, Dutch guy convince you that he's BF? I'm telling you this guy does it - he really does. And he does it straight without becoming a caricature. Ron rules. The band looked like they were enjoying themselves and I really hope they were, the crowd were going crazy. I think there's a future for all of us and one for a ReMake/ReModel tribute band. Oh actually there is one - they're called Roxy Music. Of the Avalonians? Well what can I say - what a great bunch. A scream. Special hellos to Diane, Graham Fairlie and his 'cool school pal' (his words) Robert, John O'B, Jocelyn, Reecey, Simon G, Betsy, Chris T., Gareth, Hans, Ivor, Andrew Shearer (really sorry for swearing at you about Dublin tickets) and Richard Swift. Of course many more that I may have omitted to mention but nonetheless a pleasure to meet. Motif for the night - Graham's pal Robert told a story as to how they met at school. Robert had a little tape recorder with batteries- primitive stuff. He was sitting out on the playing fields at school playing - get this - 'Just Like You'. For an hour and a half last night he and everyone else was thirteen again. A really happy, innocent, feelgood night. A joy. Well done to all who orgainsed it - it wouldn't have happened without you. Away to shake my ponytail just like I did - when I was young. And listen to the CD I won in the raffle. Heartfelt cheers and BTW did anyone else get a sniff of the scarf?
