Changing a few things around the last day or so, re decoration of the walls in my Shop. Wanted a few more 'faves' and vintage Music stuff and memorabilia dotted around, unlike other CD/Record Shops nearby who only have pics of gangs of airbrushed teenagers. So, have just surfaced from hunting out some things I wanted to find and frame etc, cool Bolan poster from 73, orig. NME full page ad for 'Warm Jets' etc, and amongst the zillions of Roxy stuff that has been kept since 72, I found a little gem that I'd completely forgotten about - which really made me think how times change, and how some artists (well, Roxy for instance) are (now) still around, whilst others seem to have disappeared into that good ol' forgotten musical black hole. Amongst the various write-ups explaining the likes of the merits of Splinter, Heads Hands and Feet, and articles claiming that Manzo and Mackay were to leave Roxy as they were annoyed at Eno's removal and sudden replacement by 'wonder-boy' Jobson etc, I found a half page ad from Melody Maker, July 29, 1972. It's an ad for the 'Summer Garden Party' at the Crystal Palace Bowl, to take place on that day. Tickets 1 pound 25 pence for the day , special guest appearance by Edgar Winter ! Top of the Bill - Arlo Guthrie, supported by Osibisa, and down in 3rd place - Stone The Crows. First artists on, for anyone who bothered to turn up at midday, were Loggins and Messina - to be followed by - wait for it - Roxy Music. Special mention too of 'Sound System by Pink Floyd'. Great stuff. Turned the page over, and there's a smaller Ad, for gig at The Rainbow on Sat Aug 19th 1972, for David Bowie - supported by Roxy Music, and Lloyd Watson. So I advise all of you - jump in those time machines, and check it out. 2 days after Roxy, you can catch Supertramp in many local pubs in London, and just for afters, doing the rounds at various suburban community centres, why not check out the Pretty Things. Loon Pants are just 1 pound 80 pence too, btw.. Writing a Cheque for them now. Yours, 14 (yet) again, Reecey... ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 17:23:18 -0800 From: "R. I have had over 500 additions to my mailing list in just two months. I have dealt with dozens of mails in the last few days, with barely a dissenting voice about this reunion. There are times when this is a great job. It's been very heart-warming to hear the enthusiasm and excitement that has come from Roxy fans the World over. Tales of the fulfilment of long-held ambitions abound, tempered by the fears expressed by many who worry that the Roxy train won't pull in at their particular station. There is an unquenchable thirst for Roxy tour minutiae. Let's face it, they came to the right man... I really do understand the sentiments that have been aired about the motives for the reunion. In fact I carried some fears of my own. That is, until the moment I saw the boys on GMTV yesterday, and felt a real welling up of emotion at the sight. With all respect to those who have voiced those perfectly valid arguments, they represent the slimmest of minorities from my evidence. Not so much negative as negligible. A few years ago, I thought that I was the only Roxy fan in the World. I rarely met anyone who shared my passion. Then I came to Avalon, and thought that there was a hard-core of fanatics keeping the flame alive. I was wrong. There is a world of Roxy fans whose imagination has been grasped and rekindled by this move. A massive constituency united in the desire to witness a body of work which has lain unheard for too long. Only one thing could improve their collective demeanour... I do hope that The Great Paul Thompson is included in this tour. I have much documentary evidence that Paul enjoys a popular mandate amongst my visitors. His absence from the line-up is a recurrent theme. The Roxy World holds its breath and awaits the right announcement...Come on Bryan, don't ruin the boat for a ha'porth of tar. It's been the personal stories that have been the most interesting. The guy proudly taking his two teenage sons to their first gig; the girl who attended the last Roxy gig in 1983 and is hoping to be at the first this time; A man who waxed lyrical at some length about his passion for the music which moved him, only revealing at the end of the letter that he was just 16. I took a humbling mail today from a Croatian who, in the most broken of broken English, begged that I visit his town. He though that I was Ferry himself, and told me that I had many fans there. Then there was the guy whose father was in the Banshees with Bryan in 1964...told me an interesting story about his tape collection I can tell you... The best story though came from a man from the North of England, who had attended the Castle Howard gig last Autumn. He told me, that that imbued by the fertility of the Ferry aphrodisiac, his wife had fallen pregnant that very night, and was due to produce their offspring on June the 11th. 'I do hope her mother will be there to hold her hand' he said, 'I'll be in Glasgow for the Roxy gig...' I'd LOVE to see that. He has said in print that he is a BIG Fan. Of course this would not happens since he is just coming back from a massive tour himself. I'm not sure if HIS audience would make the connection though. Of course I could be wrong... Now that THE announcement has been made, can we assume that Bryan will make an appearence at the Grammies? He could schmooze a little, talk up the upcoming tour (SCOPE OUT SOME VENUES- RIVIERA IN CHICAGO PLEASE!!), photo ops with star stuck influences like say.. MOBY, Duran Duran, Macy Gray ( a sure winner for sure) etc., VH1 interviews, tour sponsorship, radio interviews, lining up appearances on Jay Leno, Conan O' Brien, the TODAY show. Maybe Letterman. Letterman would not have a clue as to who they are. Paul Schaeffer would though, but of course he would try to weasel himself in to play with the band. Just them -thank you. Speaking of VH1(not MTV), it would be really nice if they did either a Behind the Music or a Storytellers. If it is a Storytellers segment, they could choose a city, oh let's say... CHICAGO, a venue... The Riviera, (Andrew:set lighting-you know the venue), invite LOYAL Fans (AVALON members)to sit in for the taping, and let Bryan field questions about the formation of the band, how the songs were conceived, influences, some solo stuff and REQUESTS. This could be a great show. It would give the rest of America a chance to know how influential they have been and not JUST than Love is the Drug and Avalon. It could do no harm considering other acts such as the Eurythmics, Elton John,Pete Townsend, BOWIE, (note the British acts here) have all done this program and have done well in this format. If I was management, I'd drop a bug in Bryan's ears now. Strike now while the momentum is building. Bobby Skafish, who is a Roxy fan (even when he was at the LOOP), made an announcement that he had seen an announcement about Roxy Music and where they were touring. He said he saw 19 countries but no US. He said hmmmm.. and then played Over You. Well YOURS TRULY got on the phone IMMEDIATELY (I was at work listening to him). He answered the phone and I told him he was incorrect. I stated that I was a member of an internet group (FORGOT TO MENTION AVALON-AND MY NAME !!!) and that WE know for sure that Roxy will visit Chicago as well as other US cities. I told him that this was verified by our British friends. He then said, thanks and all is right in the kingdom. After the song finished, he announced that he had just received a phone guy from a guy (ME!!) that was a member of an internet group who knew for sure that Roxy would visit Chicago and the States. No dates or venues announced, but it would happen. He seemed pleased! He said thanks and said Terri Hemmert would love to hear that too. Of course YOURS TRULY was smiling from ear to ear.
