We think (well, we hope) that you will find the news exciting. At 1.30PM (GMT) on Monday, 12th February a press conference will be held in the Lancaster Room of the Savoy Hotel, The Strand, London. At the press conference, Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay and I will announce our plans to do one last Roxy Music Tour of the World. Full details of the press conference, including all press releases and biographies, official photographs, the tour schedule for the UK and North America, etc., will be posted at http://www.manzanera.com at 1.00PM (GMT) on Monday. Just follow the links on the front page and you will find the full menu for the Press Conference. Later in the day, we plan to upload photographs from the press conference itself. Further details, i.e. the complete line-up for the tour, North American and European dates and venues and other relevant information will be posted on the site as we get it. We also plan to upload all articles that are published about the Tour. As the Tour develops, the site will maintain a Tour Diary with news, photos, articles, reviews and interviews. At the same time, we are doing our best to complete the Roxy Music Archive so that those who want to can look back and remember the many peaks and the odd trough of Roxy's thirty year history. Lastly, before I sign off, I'd just like to say thank you to the many people who have visited manzanera.com over the past two years. I hope to see some of you on the tour. Savoy Hotel. Roxy Music announced today their much anticipated return to the concert arenas for a world-wide tour that will take in twelve countries in Summer 2001. With their potent cocktail of fashion, romance, nostalgia and futurism they are set to stun audiences with a set of songs taken from their incomparable and unique repertoire: 'Do the Strand', 'Virginia Plain', 'Jealous Guy', 'Pyjamarama', 'Street Life', Love is the Drug' and 'Avalon' will be given the 21st Century treatment with a typically innovative lighting and stage set. Original band members, Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera were present at a packed media launch at the Savoy in the Strand where they announced that Roxy Music would play those inimitable songs for a final one-off tour. Roxy Music's influence continues to be a strong inspirational force amongst contemporary musicians. If you put together a bill with all the artists whose work bears the fingerprints of Roxy Music, it would be a festival to end them all. The show would start with their countless fellow travellers and courtiers in experimental rock of the early 1970's, take in some of the prime players in Krautrock, just about all the new romantic movement, the gatekeepers of electronica and progressive dance music, and open out into a millennial rock hall of fame with the likes of Radiohead, Pulp, Suede, Moby and many more. Roxy Music were a live band from 1972 until 1983, releasing 8 seminal studio albums which have continued to enthrall and excite - finally in 2001 the next phase of Roxy Music will begin. (see attached sheet for UK tour dates) - -2- SFX and Solo Concerts are the tour promoters. To be honest I think this is now the going rate for "established" or "classic status" bands. Last year I paid #35 for tickets to see Elton John (who was also doing stately home venues) and my partner and I were not in particularly good seats right off to the far left of the stage. Seats closer and centre were around #50! Unfortunately these high prices did not deter the plebe element as I was sat infront of a pissed up slapper whose sole intention was to stand on her chair, display her leopard skin print G-string (really) and hurl abuse at he crowd/artist and "sing" every song at the top of her cigarette damaged "voice." The men sitting around her didn't mind as they were all getting a good eyeful and seamed to forget the they had paid #35 each to see one of the biggest music stars in the world! I of course vented my spleen on her (as I'm doing now - sorry, but the memory just winds me right up as a probably missed half the show because of this tuneless bint!) My point is that #35 for what I assume are the best seats in Wembley arena to see what appears to be the last ever tour (and I hope I'm wrong on this point) of a classic band may not be all that expensive these days (unfortunately!) Cheers (and go on - change your mind and treat yourself - you know your worth it!) Alister. P.S. Here's the text with my comments in brackets :- Roxy Music reunite for world tour Roxy Music have announced a string of UK dates after eight years apart (seems longer to me!!). And the band talked of the possibility of recording new songs when the world tour is over. The Seventies pioneers will play arena dates in Britain and Ireland in June. They plan to pick up to four songs from each of their eight studio albums for the live show. Guitarist Phil Manzanera said: "We only decided to do this definitely about two-and-a-half weeks ago, so it's early days." "There was always the sense of unfinished business from my point of view. "We always had a lot more to give and these songs don't get an airing a lot. I have looked in the back of magazines and there are no Roxy tribute bands (oh no?), so I realised you couldn't cover these songs very well." Singer Bryan Ferry said: "We've got have no plans with regard to recording. Who knows?. Ask us again in September when we finish the tour. "The tour was proposed and we are all in a position where we have time to do it. I've been on tour myself a lot in the past year so I have got into the habit of being on stage again. "I've been doing quite a few songs from the Roxy years and so I thought the logical extension of that was to put the band together." He said both Manzanera and saxophonist Andy Mackay were keen to do it. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 12:01:24 -0500 From: "Victor Hastings" Subject: [AVALON] U.S. tour according to www.manzanera.com, Roxy Music's North American tour will take them to the following cities: Toronto Montreal Philadelphia Washington Boston New York Cleveland Detroit Chicago Vancouver San Francisco Los Angeles No info on dates as yet. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 17:23:05 -0000 From: Jocelyn Fiske Subject: [AVALON] Hot foot from The Strand OK. Plus the obscure stuff All: we'll just have to see what works Q; From the great Charles Char Murray " Have you got Paul Thompson's phone number?" A: BF Yes, do you want it? (Ed: We are not amused) PM: We're still putting together the band. We only decided this two and a half weeks ago (yea right, you only signed the contract two and a half weeks ago! Ed.) A: PM: High, being told Stranded had gone to number one when we were holed up in a Milan Hotel with a riot going on outside. AMc: Virgiania Plain reaching number 4 BF: (Could only think of just another low!) Washington DC in the very early days, in some little club, when the band outnumbered the audience. Q: Eno invited? BF: As long as there aren't too many bum notes.- but I guess someone will release one anyway (who could he mean?) Q: Any sols BF stuff? A: BF: No this is a Roxy tour, but there will be a Bryan Ferry solo release in October Q: What about the BBC sessions? A: PM: We are investigating and may put something out. I'm not sure I'll be able to stand the wait for official U.S. dates!!! Praying they don't come through in October as I will be in London. It would be too ironic to be on the trip I've dreamed of for a lifetime and miss the band I dearly wish to see at least once in this lifetime! As for the "selling out" aspect of this tour that some are concerned about - I think there is as much art in performance as there is in the creation of music. I'm eager to see how they translate the songs and how the band gels. I suspect this will be a first and last chance for me to see this band, so quite frankly I don't care if they do the Copa Cabana. I'll be there dancing in the aisles! Hope everyone has a great time at AMA. Can't wait for the details! One could argue whether our Master of Control would allow uncontrolled glimpses into his psyche. I don't believe so. I think that every word, every sentence, every thought, every layer, is well-considered and calculated. KBP writes: "I think BF writes mostly about BF's interior landscape." Yes, but is this the real landscape or an imaginary one? Artists (novelists, song writers) build their own scenery, partly based on facts of real life, but always 're-made and re-modelled' to a shape that fits in what they want to express. The artist's creation is a product of fantasy, it doesn't reflect reality. And when it does, it's boring. Even if the artist is figuring in the creation (the novel, the song, even the publicity circus around the artist may be an extension of the creation), it's still all imagination. Isn't this the same with BF's world? Aren't we (sometimes? too often?) mixing up the real BF with his creation, with the role he's playing? (And now we may get endless discussions about what used to be a role and eventually may have become reality.) Christian writes: "... female homosexuality in Bryan's later videos. A first point of interpretation could be that a relationship like that excludes him...", and KBP replies: "... Nobody loves the personal BF." Isn't this just the role BF plays? Rather simplified: Look at me, I'm tragic, though life in essence is wonderful it's hard for me and full of disappointments. Sigh... Isn't this kind of tragedy a universal theme in literature? Why is this so attractive? Do we recognize in our hero our own struggle with life? Does this give consolation? (Help! Is there a psychologist in the room?) Christian, I appreciate your Ferryesque romantization: "... the top musical moments of my life (the only top moments anyway...)". Stylish! In another post, Christian writes: "I just listen to it in a very emotional way rather than approach it on a more intellectual level, which is of course a feasible way as well (or a combination of both, it's not either-or)." Yes, you can enjoy in both ways. Sometimes, quietly at home, I give more attention to the lyrics, while at other times, at the concerts, it's all emotion and pleasure. You wonder: "I still don't know what the line "easing out of time" from Which Way To Turn really means (damn my limited understanding of the English language)...". I have the same problem with English (Deutsch ist doch viel leichter?), but I might have a suggestion for an interpretation, i.e.: One's understanding of the world always comes too late; in other words: if you want to know what life means and what you can get out of it, you have to come to a certain age, and it's just at that age when you realize you're too old now for the things you missed. So, a tragic paradox. Colleen writes: "I fear that this [...] tends to try to take all the rough edges off and to emasculate him...". I don't fear so. The material appears to keep its strength after some analyzing, in fact it even looks stronger. "In knowledge lies wisdom", isn't it? Ton PS. "Incognoscenti" in the subject was ironic, you must have understood. No pretensions here! _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #50 *************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
